Billy he is honestly just brillant. How many songs today would be lucky to have one good line in them... Billy has writen so many & in this song alone there is probably like 10. Below is just one of them... If I'd had more characters I'd post more :) Thanks Mr Bragg you're a champion bloke "Mother shakesher head and reads aloud from the newspaper And Father puts another lock on the door And reflects upon the violent times that we are living in While chatting with the wife beater next door"
This describes perfectly elements of my childhood in many ways. The stagnant 70s and 80s in a dying post war England... built on fear violence and division .... it spelt the end of our post war after glow and the deterioration into a cold divided nation fearful and stilted.....
Wow! Nostalgia OD. For another Britain and hearing this in my bedroom on Triple M public radio in Adelaide around the time and having talking with the taxman on Cassette. Emotional on many levels. Great bit of song writing. Nailed Britain at a point in time. Up there among his best with Between the Wars, Days Like These,, New England. He jumped the shark at Sexuality
Cheap beer and Overtime , i remember this , the working class , they will be happy , with their lot ! ! ! an educated working class well , thats something else , then the tiger is out the cage , Education !
It also harks to modern England... a country I left 26 years ago in the post thatcherism and centre right economics. My son lives a life of Mac jobs and crappy pay, deteriorating so ial fabric,

So many lyrics in this piece work on so many different levels. Love your work, BB!
The humdrum mundanity of every day life when your heart is broken.

Something every football fan knows, it only takes five fingers to form a fist.
Credit, he has in my books and Fanta.
Sadly I think this guy will have to die before his writing gets the credit it deserves, how many great lyrics has this man written?
Every football fan knows it only takes five fingers to form a fist is genius level writing.
Don’t kill Bill
It only takes five fingers to make fist
