- Well this is a messy thing. It's like the Hazer Phaser, but much more portable and MUCH moister.
One correction (so far). After reassembling the unit I discovered that the microcontroller starts by ramping the motor up slowly to control the initial current peak.
I'm not sure the original purpose of this device (hair spraying?). But it has been covidulated into a disinfecting gun.
You can load it with the contents of cheap supermarket surface sanitiser and then blast most surfaces with its saturating output. Unlike the heated units this doesn't create much of an airborne haze, but instead does the equivalent of pumping the trigger on a spray gun at high speed.
I don't recommend its use near delicate electronic things, including phones and keyboards. And note that after turning it off it still squirts what was left in the armoured black tube (possibly a simple acumulator?) with decreasing force until a small drizzle sprays out the end.
One good thing about the simple diaphragm pump is that it shouldn't suffer harm if run dry when the bottle is empty.

The comment about how electric fans have a speed dial labelled off-high-medium-low reminds me that Technology Connections did an excellent video on this a few months ago. I had wondered about it myself. It is all to do with the peculiarities of shaded pole motors.
His video came to mind as I said it. It's a common bump start technique also used in electronic motor control.
Comments like this do well to illustrate that we're all part of an extended technical family.
Atomiser? - more like a water pistol!!!!
I was thinking about that pic of the priest using a water pistol to baptise a kid at a safe distance during lockdown.
Water pistols at dawn. I don't know what Dawn will say when we spray her with water, but it is all in good fun.
lol, I baptise you with the gun 8-l Ooooh! Why does that sound wrong? lol

I can't see any comments for it so:
The capacitor and resistor between the micro and pot is an easy way to do a basic ADC..
You toggle the IO pin's pull up/down resistors/internal logic and count how many cycles it takes for the pin to go high/low, this is the analog value.
It's not super accurate, but for something like this, plenty good enough and you can use a cheaper micro.
That's a good point. Microchip used to suggest that for early PICs.
source and drain - after teaching MOSFETs to students for quite some time now, I came up with a different interpretation: the MOSFETs drain is the sink where the current from the load disappears into the transistor in order to again come out from the source into the circuit...
Clive: "does this open"?
Viewers: " that's a silly question, 'cause Clive + Spudger = opens anything!"
I say, a contest between him and the Doctor. Who can open what fastest?
And if Clive + Spudger can't open it, Clive + Hammer can...
Vice of knowledge, X-Ray hammer, there are many ways
Clive the Spudgerer!
The mosfet trigger is a common add on for battery airsoft guns as it stops the contacts arcing and can have active braking and 3-shot and other functions.
I wonder why they didn't just use the trigger switch to power up the LEDs and the MCU directly, and let it switch the high-current device itself.
When I heard the pump, I had instant flashbacks to my brother's silk-screening shop. The atomizer gun reminds me of a spotting gun used to remove unwanted ink splats on silk screened garments. Using carbon-tetrachloride squirted through a very tiny nozzle, it put out a strong fine needle-like spray that was forceful enough to break up the ink. The unit wasn't rechargeable, which would have been helpful indeed, but I'm sure it would have been today. Being the early 1990s, rechargeable devices like we have today weren't as common.
The diode after the regulator might be an alternative to a resistor or inductor.
May 'good' supplies would rectify and smooth, then a small drop in voltage, followed by another capacitor., so it may be belt and braces against motor interference.
Schottky in that position could be to allow the micro to be powered in isolation during production test (eg. for programming). Similar to how you use one in a PIC design to allow the programming lead to power the micro without back-feeding the whole circuit.
Clive you're always entertaining but your inimitable style really has been a great pleasure during Covid.
I like the zoom dude, keep it up 👍
Always love watching Clive spray and make a big mess on camera.
Ah, the old man issue. When you think your done peeing, the old John Thomas isn't listening and still has some ways to go.
Yep, what still works, leaks.
Motorised spray bottle, a solution looking for a use.
I quite like the Mosfet supported switch idea, sure it's additional cost but switches for high load currents can become pricey anyways
I would think that the current shunt feedback to the micro might be for motor speed control feedback for maintaining motor speed.
It's common to add a Schottky for reverse polarity connection (with low Vf) on the regulator, usually on the input, but hey-ho, it works where it is, too!
I know that could be some additional work, but also having the values for the small nF capacitors would be great for understanding the general scheme.😊
Typically a decoupling capacitor will be around 100nF. The only way to test them would be to remove them from the PCB. Any manual soldering of multilayer capacitors poses a risk of fracturing them.
@@bigclivedotcom Ok, so from your answer, I assume that some SMD capacitors have no label on them. I have very few experience with SMD components.
@@RobertoColi The capacitors don't tend to have a printed value like the resistors. I'm not sure why.
The data sheet for a 7805 regulator suggests 1 uf on the input and 0.1 uf on the output, but there is very wide latitude in what will work. As Clive points out, 100 nf, which is 0.1 uf, is very common as a bypass capacitor.
The other way to think about likely values is to consider those 10K resistor / capacitor values as low pass filters (they are), and decide what frequency you want as a cutoff frequency. You can then calculate the capacitor size. For instance a 100 nf cap will have a corner frequency of 160 Hz, which might be a little higher than you want to filter motor cogging.
A 1 uf cap would have a corner frequency of 16 Hz, which would be lower than necessary, so you might pick something like a 0.47 uF cap. But 1 uf might be cheaper than 0.47 uf, so you might instead pick the larger cap. A lot of this sort of engineering is to calculate the ideal part value, then value engineer by finding the cheapest part that is "close enough".
"it's quite well made"... Sometimes I wished we could send back a thank-you note to the original electronics/mechanical engineers who took some pride in coming up with a careful design, which is even more amazing when we know the budget constraints these people need to meet, and also the need to optimize the speed of assembly.
I think the more interesting thing in this video is the label from the cleaner...
Usually only food and drugs are labeled with ingredients, except for proprietary mixes.
Here in the US most cleaners you can only tell the formula by smell, some say "ammonia free"(but that's one of the more distinct smells already), and there are many off-brand copies of each.
The majority don't have any kind of labeling outside of branding and the warning saying to wash it off and call poison control.
The Co-op puts ingredient lists on most items including beer and wine.
I do wish people didn't use "USB" connectors to feed 12v - it's all too easy to grab the wrong cable and wave goodbye to one's sensitive bits :-(

I use good old household vinegar for de-scaling? both my shower and coffee machine. For the tougher deposits I soak kitchen paper in the vinegar and place it over the area that needs "treatment". Leave it for an hour or two and rinse with water.
me too, i just spray my bathtub and let it sit for 15mins before scrubbing. it makes alot of hydrogen gas? you can always hear the calcium sizzing. also i put my shower head into a little bag with vinegar in it.

Diaphragm pumps have been a thing for quite some time. Most Small engine carbs use them. They don't live long.
@Dave Micolichek Ethanol destroys them.
@Dave Micolichek Non Ethanol is unobtainum here. 10% is best you can do at the pump. Other options are high priced can fuels mail ordered or off the shelf if you can find it. White gas is obtainable across the dotted line in Mexico.
@Dave Micolichek lol, I live in the desert sw of New Mexico. Closest lake is 75 miles. They have no place to buy gas. Here they would rather you use electric.
@@pulesjet In Canada, the highest grade of gasoline is alcohol-free, but since most of the pumps only have one hose, you need to either wait for someone else to get premium, or buy a few litres to empty the hose.
The title made me assume this was about a handheld fog machine.
It's much more than just a descaling agent, we use EDTA in biomedicine as well, to scavenge for calcium ions among other things, it's like sodium citrate's meaner brother.
With different actuation (air pulses) the same sort of pump is built into many outdoor power equipment carburetors, for string trimmers and the like.
I think the 'atomizer'is cheaper if you just want the pump.... 8-)
@@pwkoert6594 Oh, almost certainly. I can't imagine the "paper" diaphragm most carburetors use would hold up terribly well to aqueous fluids either.
I still cannot figure out how the middle pin of the mosfet is soldered! It should be the gate pin, probably. Do you use the back of the package for that? Then why is there a middle pin?
The middle pin is generally connected to the tab. In many SMD styles the middle bin is cut short so the two side pins can have bigger solder pads. The middle bin is rarely the gate.
An atomizer takes whatever fluid you put into it and turns it into a fine mist.. basically breaks it down into even smaller molecules for things you want very finely covered or coated.
Maybe the diode behind the 7805 is there to prevent frying the 7805 from backfeeding it from the capacitors on power off. Normally the diode goes from the output to the input.
I'm pretty sure they use the shut current measurements in soft-starting the motor.

Update: She liked it a lot but it quit working. I measure only tenths of a volt across the battery. Some differences are that mine does not have the sticker on the outside, the high pressure hose is clear rather than the black in your unit, the battery lays across the bottom rather than where yours is, and the charger is a wall wart rather than a USB connection. The motor is showing a nontrivial amount of rust on its outer shell, so apparetly things leaked inside. There is no evidence of any protection on the battery...

My floor fan has the opposite setting, it starts from a very low speed and scale up. There's a trimpot for offset adjustment, though.

@@bigclivedotcom ah I see, just a cheap-fancy squirter. For... a wet breeze on a hot day ?
Wonder why they went with an external charging circuit? Seems like it would be more convenient and cheaper construction to just have a USB input on the gun itself and have that circuit board internal. The way it is now, what's to stop you from accidentally plugging something else (like a 'normal' 12v power supply) into the barrel plug, potentially overcharging the lithium cells?
They probably switched from an external 12V charger to the USB one because it was much cheaper and divulged them of the liability associated with cheap mains powered chargers.
@7:00 1500 mAh from 3 18650 batteries is past respectable, common max is 3600 and these are 5000. Well past respectable into the "we should test this to see if it's actually true" range.
So far past respectable they're pretty mediocre. :)
The cells are in series to produce a battery rated at 11.1v 1500mAh, that means the cells are also rated at 1500mAh, if they were in parallel it would be a 3.7v 4500mAh battery. Of course the actual capacity may be lower.

Hi Clive you ever thought of doing a test/teardown of the Brennenstuhl energy meter 4 way gang socket. be interested to see what you think of it
The controller is (hopefully) also looking for motor overloads due to a clogged nozzle causing excessive pressure buildup in the pump and armored hose...
The circuit design was a total overkill. Probably from some junior engineers who want to do some exercises with MCU.
Wouldn't the current sense resistors more likely be sensing lower current draw as in when the bottle is empty the pump will be drawing less current (due to no load) and will stop the pump running when there is no liquid? Although it could be doing both high and low current shut off.

I have a pocket scope here which I bought after seeing an enthusiastic paid review. It's extremely frustrating to use due to the menu system and ease of changing a wrong setting. It's notable that the person who did that review has never used it in one of their videos since.
Great video! Just wondering how the heating (to create a fog) is done if there's any? Otherwise it should just be a sprayer?
No heating. Just a wobble plate liquid pump.
So my silly question is I have a set of low voltage fairy lights with a three AA timer pack. I have quite a few of these timer packs at my disposal and I'd hope to do a UV LED and glow resin project. Unfortunately much to my chagrin upon finally getting around to measure the voltage output to the leads of these timer battery packs I come to find that they are only putting out 0.020 volts at the lead wires for the OEM fairy lights. Long story short am I missing something or is there anyway that I might be able to continue with my intended project utilizing these packs or do I need to find a new avenue for powering my UV LEDs?
20mV is 0V for most purposes, have you checked the timer, batteries and any connections?
Maybe the lights are pulling down the voltage, or need to be connected if they're not already.
Even if they're not suitable, then it could be pretty simple to put something together, I imagine you should be able to find timer boards somewhere, battery packs are widely available. A microcontroller and an RTC module would work for a timer, and you could program sequences into it, if you like that sort of thing.
My lady has been complaining about not having much strength in her hands. Ordered what I think is the same unit for her to try out for those bigger jobs. What sorts of cleaning agents do you think would cause trouble inside this thing?
That design makes me want to play with an arduino and a mosfet and some of the small motors I have kicking around here... :-)
It should work with most kitchen surface style cleaners.
I wonder if the power supply negotiates a higer voltage as in the QC "Quick Charge" spec. Otherwise, you might plug that USB cable into another USB device expecting 5V and POOF!
Nice explanation.
They probably also use the motor current to detect low battery...
How does this differ from the atomizer II that I have? It has stopped spraying and after disassembly I’m not sure the hoses are connected correctly. Seems like air is blowing back in bottle.
It sounds like the pump may be round the wrong way or a one way valve has failed. Check the output nozzle is clear.
has the sound of a cheap air compressor or maybe a battery powered sprayer (paint?)
I love the words Spudger and Spudge.
Are the two 0.33 ohm resisters in parallel limiting the current to the motor or just current sense?. I don’t see another path for the motor to source power other than through the 10k pull down resistor
They appear to be for current sensing, but will also limit peak current slightly.
What happens when it runs out of fluid? Does the pump stop? Are the current sensing resistors so that it can tell when the pump is running with no fluid in it.
It will run empty, but the rubber diaphragms seem safe for doing that.
