    I did a little experiment with urine a few years ago, following directions from a revolutionary war era pamphlet on producing nitrates for gunpowder. Basically, I just filled a 55 gal drum up with grass clippings, and soaked it every day with fresh urine for three months, then left it alone for six months. At the end of this time, I was left with a small amount of the absolute blackest dirt that I have ever seen. The peppers that I grew out of that may not have been explosive, but they sure were dynamite :)

    It's crazy how Urine can work for fertilization! I did Okra last year (one entire bed) and all I used was diluted Urine. They grew massive (in regular non fertile soil) and had trouble keeping up with the growth and fruits. Had to pickle almost everyday with the growth that they had. I don't see myself spending extra on synthetic fertilizer this year either when our bodies seem to expel extra nutrients and minerals that we can just give to plants, they know how to use it!!

    I use the urine straight, but it's because I produce a couple gallons a day. Then, I add a single scoop of the MiracleGro to the two gallons of urine. I started recommending urine to people about twenty years ago, who contacted me regarding their dawn redwoods languishing. Initially they were skeptical, but always emailed me back at the end of the season with glowing reviews. I figured I'd try it on the garden too, and it works great. I use it for charging my biochar as well.

    I'm lucky enough to live with 4 people who have pre-installed urine spigots. They are happy to contribute as long as I provide empty juice jugs in their bathrooms. I was crazy and lazy... Me and the littlest one mixed up 30 gallons of water/fert. and ran around making everything smelly. I used a pretty strong mix= one gallon of urine in the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket, top off with hose water. So, 4-1 ratio. But, I knew it was fixing to rain and had been raining for days. Everything got it. Peanuts, sunflowers, okra, tomatoes, watermelons, squash, cassava, citrus trees, strawberries, etc... Things are either gonna curl up and die from shock, or knock me out of the way the next time I walk by because they're growing so fast. We shall see. BTW, I think the urine plants in your test are doing slightly better because they're so green they're tinted blue, whereas I still see some yellow here and there on your MiracleGro plants. I'm so glad you're doing this experiment for me, 'cause I was tempted to buy blue crystals this year. You're contaminating your garden so I don't have to taint mine. You're my hero, man! (well, my 2nd best hero. Joel Salatin is pretty hard to touch) But Joel Salatin never sent me water chestnuts, so you've got that up on him.

    Poring urine over leafy greens like basil, etc I think is nasty. Also in stuff like potatoes, carrots, beetroot, etc. I think it's ohk to use it at the base of stuff like tomatoes, corn, peppers, etc. Where the Urie is not directly making contact with the fruits. At least, to spray it on any soil, prior to planting sounds a bit less nasty for potatoes, and leafy greens.

    Urine story (horror story?) for y'all... Last time I was mixing urine, I'd pour about an inch and a half in the bottom of a gallon jug, then fill with water. I was trying to do too many things at once, in a hurry. Hands were full, so I stuck the end of my dram diffuser in the neck of the jug to free my hand up for something else. Urine makes vigorous froth when adding aerated water. Jug wasn't full yet, but the pressurized froth hit the dram which was obstructing the jug opening. Hose went flying, aged urine water and froth went flying, and I just happened to have my mouth open at the time. You think urine damp socks in sandals is bad, try getting it in your mouth! Nothing I could do, so I just kept watering the garden til I was done. My family looked on and laughed, then refused to go near me afterward. I threatened to hug them all. They shouldn't have been grossed out, right? It was their pee, after all. Had to go take a shower, and I'd just had one before I went to tend the garden. I could have been really earth-mother about it and sat around smelling like P all day, but I think my crazy-ometer would have pegged out in their eyes, so I had mercy on them.

      Think less about water, And More About Soil- water Retention. A Nice And Well Draining Soil Will Make Happy Roots, But That Will Vary From Plant To Plant, Pot To Pot, Location To Location. Damp Soil Is Great In Between Waterings. Never Too Dry, Never Too Wet. It All Depends On What Your Growing And What The Requirements For That Plant Are. A well Draining Porous Soil Full Of Organic Matter And Microbial Life Is Ideal For Almost All Grows. If It’s Not In The Ground, Then You Must Control What Goes In To Understand What You Can Get Out of It. Sometimes Native Soils Aren’t That Reliable And Require Tilling And Maintenance. A Good Rule Of Thumb Is To Keep Soil Damp, Only Dry About 1-1&1/2” deep, And Not To Soak The Plants, Even When They Are Wilting And Soil Is Dry. We Want To Create A Balance So That Not Only The Roots Thrive, But The Organic Life Underneath As Well. Hope This Helps

    MiracleGro isn't evil. It's composed chemically to have what general plants need (fast). I mean, for your potted plants and greenhouse it's great.. but if you have a garden, you should probably work on improving your soil and mulching rather than using soluble fertilisers. Your urine varies in composition, whereas bought fertilisers don't. Quality control. Some see it as artificial but it makes things reliable. Chemistry is chemistry. Elements are elements. Zero magic. If you aren't comfortable with pissing on your edible plants, I'll be honest, I don't feel like it. Especially for my herbs and root vegetables.. lol Mulch early season. I've never known anyone to use liquid fertilisers _in_ their garden. I scatter coffee grounds atop all the time.

      You're right about soil building - that's the best. In some situations, though, it's almost impossible. Florida sand, for instance. That was what got me interested in foliar feeding to begin with. Here in the clay, though, we will just keep building.

    "Urine? Ewww! Why would you use something so gross when you can just use dead bodies!"
    Correction OP, the sane person would try their best to utilise free stuff.
    Think microbiome, think Indian zero cost natural agriculture, think Korean ultra-low cast agriculture methodologies like Jadam.
    Everything corporations want us to like, is an inferior product in comparison 👍

    Don't you have to worry about the buildup of salts in the soil when using urine? How many uses will you be able to get of the soil before it's ruined?

    • @davidthegood

      You don't have to worry about it. Salt moves through the soil quickly.

    Please tell me how you stop slugs eating through your crops! l have a million slugs, you would think l was trying to grow them! Any help appreciated. 😃

    • @davidthegood

      Cheap beer! I had a major slug issue in a garden some years back and a friend said slugs would drink beer and drown in it. I put little saucers of beer all around the garden in the evening and sure enough, it worked. Also, in the evening just after dark when they started to come out, my wife and I would pick them off the plants. Another method is to wet some pieces of scrap lumber, then lay them on the ground in the evening. The next morning, the slugs will often be underneath them, hiding from the sun. Just keep fighting - it took us about a week to wipe out our issues and save the garden. One last thing: if you have mulch in your garden, slugs love that. They don't like bare ground as much. Good luck! -DTG

    Do you age your urine before application? We let it sit three weeks or more in a closed container and then apply it 3 parts water 1 part urine. Up to 5-1 parts. For nursery trees and fruit trees.

    • @davidthegood
      @davidthegood  7 лет назад +1

      I never had a lot of luck with strawberries, though a friend swears by feeding them with fish emulsion. Personally, I tore out my two strawberry beds and planted mulberry trees instead.

    I saw water flowing, but didn't hear a pump - I hope that's good. Most of our 'too much water & whatnot' journey is over here.
    OK, for the first time in my life I have signed up for the (any) Preppers Summit . Looks interesting - but for the moment I'm knee deep in Food Summit, already missed day 1 :'( So the 2 summits timing is spot on :)
    As for my wager in the M-Gro vs Urine testing ... it's a tough call since the urine's nutrient value depends entirely on the donor of said fertilizer. Most folks donating (myself at the moment) - I'd have to put my money on M-Gro. ... sob ... crap - I bought a box for $3.95 at The Evil Empire , a.k.a. WallyWorld. Oh the Karma coming for that :/
    But I would like to assume it is just YOUR family pitching in ... so I'll put 5 on URINE!!! ***
    Have a great day David, Rachel and the minis.
    *** $5 if I am wrong, $5,000,000 if I'm right. ;)

    • @davidthegood
      @davidthegood  7 лет назад +4

      I hope the summit works out well - I'm going to be watching as I can. You're right about urine related to diet. I eat a lot of produce grown on volcanic soil and very little junk or soda. Higher meat consumption raises the nitrogen levels in urine, so meat-eaters would likely have better success than vegans.
