- Early Seventh-day Adventists such as William Miller, Joseph Bates and Joshua Himes were all opposed to slavery and advocated for its abolition. Ellen White also made statements that some of the laws of the land at the time should be violated if need be. This radical edge meant that the church was pushing boundaries and led to several schools opening up in the south. The foremost one being Oakwood Industrial School - today named Oakwood University.
