  • The Commando Monument at Spean Bridge
It is here in the area around Spean Bridge where thousands of allied troops came to train for warfare during World War II. This is a special place!
The Commando Monument just north of Spean Bridge is a large three-figure bronze statue commemorating the service and sacrifice given by thousands of Allied troops during the Second World War.
It is a place where history was made and today the Monument is a place of reverence and respect, located in a stunning location overlooking Ben Nevis and the Mamore mountains.
In the village of Achnacarry some six miles from the monument is a Commando Museum which has a lot more information and artefacts on the Commandos and is well worth visiting.
Each year on Armistice Sunday a memorial service is held around the monument attended by veterans and their families, together with respectful locals and visitors.
The winter and summer months regularly provide fantastic views with strong lighting in both stormy, cold days, and settled, calm days. Early summer mornings and evenings are the best time for photographers.
There is a good car-park near the Monument and nearby a few self-catering and a cosy restaurant with rooms - Old Pines. Spean Bridge village is 5 minutes down the road.
    *****************************************
We drove from Fort William, follow signs for Inverness and/or the A82. The distance is around 50 miles and will take between 60-90 minutes on average. Upon entry to the village, continue through Drumnadrochit, past the village green and over the small bridge, following the bend in the road to the right. The Loch Ness Centre is on the left, just past the bank.
Here we visited the The Loch Ness Centre (formerly Loch Ness 2000) was established in 1980 and has consistently ranked as one of the most popular tourist attractions in Scotland.
