That's great news!!! I agree with the other comment, however. Since they essentially have a "clean sheet" let's get the power lines underground to protect them from any future fires!!! Also let's hope government agencies have plans in place to keep the non-native plant life under control so this can NEVER happen again!!!

Great to see the rebirth of Lahaina underway. Nothing will replace the tragedy that occurred and the lives lost but seeing rebuilding underway helps me believe there is light at the end of the tunnel.
Thought I might see steel studs instead of wood... Hope they use James Hardi Concrete siding or similar fire proof materials. It will be interesting to see the choice of roofing materials along with the color they choose.

Nice video and big thanks to the person who is first to rebuild !! Hopefully the new building will have a snowball effect and the contractors are able to keep up with the upcoming demand. I know many of the contractors lost homes themselves.

We always look forward to your updates and appreciate them. Hoping for a more complete one soon. Monthe ago the mayor appointed a committee to recommend how Lahaina should be rebuilt. Any results on that? Also there was talk of no commericial construction on the ocean side of Front Street., Anything on that? We fet far better updates from you than from the officials!

Great video. I haven't been watching the updates, but as far as you can tell, has the rebuilding process been happening on the terms of the local indigenous population? Hopefully it is. They've had to deal with too much shit.

When that first home is finished will the owners be able to move in or will they have to wait for utilities to be re-established?
Most of the commercial buildings in the downtown area were old and not fire resistant. Will the new rebuilds be up to modern fire codes and set backs from the coast?
Hi Jesse, I would like to see details on how the new homes are constructed. What is code for resistance to fire, wind, and water intrusion. Will solar, battery backup, and EV charging features be built into each project, including affordable housing? Does it make financial sense? Compare and contrast building codes from before and now after the fire. Thank you for the work you have done documenting what has happened and what is to come.
Codes have not been changed since the fire. They are still from 2018 and 2020 - ags.hawaii.gov/bcc/building-code-rules/ Codes are only MINIMUM requirements. If homebuilders want to go beyond minimum code they can build whatever your mind and wallet can come up with to be more resilient when it comes to fire, wind, and water intrusion and also for energy related features.
@@LanghorstinessI would expect this makes some difference in construction. Most of the existing physical plant was built to older standards. Not improving roofs to a standard above model code does seem dubious. It has become apparent all over the mainland West the the standard IBC and IRC are not adequate to hinder fire spread from wind driven wildfire spreading into residential neighborhoods.
@@billsmith5109 I 200% agree. My town is surrounded by pine/spruce forest and thick gauge metal roofs are common both for fire resistance and for shedding snow. There are also special soffits and vents that are screened to help resist cinders from being blown into building openings. One of the most vulnerable entry points is a rooftop ridge vent. In a wind driven fire, cinders landing on the roof can be rolled up the roof slope and then jam against the ridge vent screen. All you need is one of those to flick into the attic and now you've got a fire in your roof. My wife has a cousin in Kailua Oahu and her older home is a flammable garden shed compared to how modern homes can be built.
why are they putting that crushed concrete onto the lots after the lot is cleaned up?..just to get rid of the concrete or is it beneficial?..it looks like after they build the foundation and start framing the house they then put topsoil over top of the crushed concrete
do you know if there is new regulations regarding rebuilding peoples houses. THeywere taking about making it a fancy E city or is it going back to the way it was.

These are the only homes because they were built in the last few years.
Many lots not cleared yet. The reason they’ve taken a year to do this is Hawai’i has been unarmed . Like to see them take land in Texas
1350 out of 1399 residential lots are cleared. Only remaining are those that residents have not given Right of Entries to enter the property and clean yet.
This is wonderful news. I hope the new community is built to be fire proof. All of the rooftops need to be painted blue. I also hope they construct a memorial to all of the lives that perished and all of the children who are still missing.

When I lived there in 1976 people called it "Lahaina." Nobody ever said "Lahaina town." Locals, haulis, tourists, everybody said Lahaina. When I hear "Lahaina town" it sounds like somebody is trying to be a local when the locals never said that.
We lived till 2015, nobody call Lahiana towen, just Lahiana.

Sadly, a landfill near the sea. Hawaii Real Estate channel covered that before and while it was happening.

It baffles me??? Why not take the opportunity to go underground with the powerlines and NEVER have to worry about downed powerline fed fires again...
It's ridiculously expensive and very technical and super hard to maintain. You just can't keep water and moisture out of power conductors that are underground.

@@fayemills4206 probably not. It is a massive logistical nightmare and so is the long-term maintenance and upkeep. Would you like it if all the powerlines were buried and 3 to 5 years later your power went out and the electric utility said it might be a month to fix it? and then they raise your rates again and again in order to accommodate the high maintenance? And subterranean transformers exploded and killed people? The list goes on.
@@boblatkey7160 Sorry but it seems like you are imagining a bunch of assumptions which leads you to questionable conclusions. I design subdivisions and municipal infrastructure and where I am in the Rocky Mountains in Canada new subdivisions can ONLY have buried utilities. Overhead lines are only for transmission of high voltage between towns/cities. First, the lines are not raw power lines under the ground. They are fully insulated and installed in plastic ducts and the ducts could fill with water and then drain out and it makes no difference to the wires and fiber optics. The duct banks are only 1.2m underground (4 feet) so are relatively easy to install. On property, code allows only 0.6m-1.0m (2-3feet). Transformers and switching cubicles are mounted on concrete pads on the ground surface. Even then, power is back on right away. It does cost more to install, HOWEVER, the system is invisible and virtually immune to fire and wind. We barely ever have the power out UNLESS electrical storms have lightning hit overhead lines. My last power bill for a family of four was $62US all in and we have low population density and complex terrain to build in. If it works here at that monthly power bill, it can work in tiny little Hawaii. It breaks my heart to think the lines would be rebuilt overhead after what Lahaina has been through.
Can you go to the permit department and see who is pulling the permits and who is the builder. What happened to the previous owner?
Progress is excellent news! But even better news would be, what actually caused this particular "progress," to happen. Clearly, this was no natural forest fire gone out of control.

The Lahaina ocean front property that housed businesses,will they be owned and operated by the same owners? If not this rebuilding effort is showing cheap housing for displaced residents. This is a Government relocation effort to take land for high rise buildings along the ocean front properties and businesses. Giv😅ing the wealthy a chance to get land for high rise condominium development. It will be the first model 15 min city in the island. The socialists want to control the people and economy of Maui. Follow the money to see the corruption and those involved in this land grab.

@@Joe-mz6dc no I do not, it's called a natural disaster caused by extreme winds. Keep in mind the winds were so severe that day that peoples roof shingles were blowing off of their homes. You cannot do anything in a fire when the wind blows that hard. I lost my house and everything I owned in a wildfire in Santa Barbara and the same wacky kind of shit happened where some things burned and some things didn't. Standing behind conspiracy theories only hurts the community and the local people who actually need help and not people trying to lay blame. It's really shameful.

Various other "fire conditions" that led myself (and undoubtedly various others) rethink our thoughts about moving into Lahaina well before Mother Nature burned so much of the town down. I dearly love Lahaina, the rest of Maui and all of Hawaii and the Hawaiian people. Let's be patient and not blame others for what "Mother Nature" has done.
