Wow! Just beautiful. What kind of a mind did this man have? I can listen to all kinds of music; classical, contemporary, jazz, electronic, etc. and come away feeling like I have heard and understood everything it was trying to say. Or at least enough to feel like listening to something else for a while. Not so with Bach. No matter how often I listen to his music, even when it's the same specific piece, I find something new. I never leave his music feeling like I've heard and understood everything the music was doing. I sometimes find myself with a fixed grin, transported and astonished by what I'm hearing. When it came to music, this Johann Sebastian Bach was beyond a genius.
We should indeed be thankful, Anne! By the way, I kindly recommend the appreciation of the work of a living classical composer dedicated mostly to sacred music. I feel myself like a sort of non-official ambassador for his music - and, effectively, also one of his few supporters. He is very, very talented. You won't be disappointed.

Super beauty. Is this motet related to Saint Paul? I know one cavatina from Paulus oratorio by Mendelssohn which same titel. Cheers from São Paulo, Brazil.
Dear Bruno, the title of this motet refers to Book of Luke chapter 2, 10. The first two verses are also based on the Book of Isaiah chapter 41,10 and chapter 43,1. The last two verses are based on a choral hymn by Paul Gerhardt title "Warum sölt ich mich denn grämen?". The sopranos sing the cantus firmus of this melody: ruclips.net/video/KpJLVVkrXKs/видео.html This motet was intended for Christmas celebrations. Bach also parodied the words of another Gerhardt choral hymn titled "Fröhlich soll mein Herze springen" to the melody of "Warum sölt ich mich denn grämen?": ruclips.net/video/ohYXBi6WyOs/видео.html I hope this information is of any help.
The performance by Musica Amphion and the Gesualdo Consort is also very beautiful: ruclips.net/video/4wtJyuKxNxA/видео.html The recording with a lot of documentation in a booklet is part of the Bach in Context series: www.pieterjanbelder.nl/shop/Bach-in-Context-III-F%C3%BCrchte-dich-nicht-p87325577

JSB on a monday.
Where is this lovely church?

Perfectly sung, but I don't agree with the interpretation but the idea is very clearly performed. You can't comfort someone in this tempo...
