I live inland San Diego and no other channel even comes close to helping me. I started with someone giving me a dead orchid and now I have 3 green houses with seeds, winter tomatoes, greens, lettuce and a passion fruit vine we had to build a custom trellis for! I spend my days in a sound booth so getting outside is critical for my sanity! Thanks for bringing the fun back to gardening. 🥾 🥾
Thanks to you, this was the first year I grew potatoes! Fun for me and my granddaughter and tasted so much better than I could have imagined ❣️. Thank you ☺️
I planted blue, purple and two kinds of red. The blue and purple are both amazing, they are creamy like a Yukon gold and taste awesome! I’m planting them every year from now on. 😃
Wish I could grow potatoes in the ground, but dealing with all kinds of critters, I grow in buckets in a way that cost really nothing, and are SO successful for us, Thanks 😀
I'm in central California and still relatively new to gardening and was just debating if it was still good time to plant a few store bought potatoes that have sprouted on me. Thanks for the encouragement guys. I'm going to get to that this week and cross my fingers that I get some potatoes from them.
Chickens absolutely love those grubs and my friends said they get more eggs after a heavy feeding of them. I found 75 of them while turning a compost pile and the chickens went crazy.
Too cold here in middle Tennessee so waiting to plant them in the spring as usual. Looking forward to growing a lot more varieties like you showed in the coming season. I’ve only grown sweet potatoes and I get a fantastic crop every time!
I'm so glad I was watching you because I have been trying to get a hold of the sarpo mira potatoes after watching RUclipsrs in the UK plant and harvest huge quantities. I have placed my order!!
Up here in clay country Vermont, I grow potatoes in a chicken wire tower. I used zip ties but probably should've used twine for the untying during harvest time. You lasagna the potatoes between straw and compost
I did a ruth stout/no dig type potato bed as well as containers last year. I didn't use straw just put down a bit of compost mixed with bone and blood meal with more compost heaped over the top. They took a little longer to start dying back than the container plants and they were huge! I've just moved, don't have beds yet,and have used all my containers for garlic so I'm just going to go buy some organic russets and make some hills to plant them in and see what happens. Some of my stored potatoes are already sprouting so I might just continue on by planting those out as they sprout in a kind of succession planting. We'll see what happens!
I had a red, white & blue potato tower over the summer. 🇺🇸 (Grew Amarosa, French Fingerling & All Blue in a 3-tier Original GreenStalk.) Still have a few left to roast or pressure cook. They are all super tasty and I wanna grow MORE next growing season!
Milky Spore will puts a layer of fungus down that keeps grubs away. But you could also till the soil and put down Sunflower seeds. Then the birds come and find the grubs. Wish I had video of the time I did that, Blue Jay feeding frenzy😎
I am so jealous I wish I can garden with you guys our garden season is over here in Spokane Washington snow are already here though it didn’t stop me from going outside as I collect those garden gold falling from my 4 maple trees.
I totally just gave up on my garden mid-summer. I recently pruned my pepper plants, and they are already growing back, my tomatoes were attacked by spider mites and infested/ died :(. My sprayer broke/got stuck and I cannot twist it open. Eggplants died. I wasn't able to grow strawberries at all this year. *But* I was able to make an amazing Tomato Sauce with the tomatoes I harvested earlier in the summer. Hopefully I gain the motivation to go out there and try again. I have so many pots, soil and seeds lol. I recently gave some away to my cousins Elementary School, and her class has their own little garden going. Cheers EG team :D
2nd year now, growing the Purple Peruvian Potato (All deep purple throughout) you are really going to enjoy them. I make a garlic smashed potato with the blue, and another batch with Red Thumb. nice presentation
I’m trying Austrian Crescent Fingerlings this year instead of Russian Fingerling. Several others as well. All in 15 gallon containers. This is my first Potato gardening adventure.
I was pleasantly surprised when potatoes grew fine in my horrible Virginia clay, though the size and quantity suffered from the sheer physical restriction. Breaking up the soil structure and adding a few buckets of creek mud per row, predictably, offered an incredible advantage. It's funny how delighted one can be by an unsurprising result.
i planted mine last week and was wondering if i was dumb for planting in fall, but then saw my first leaves breaking thru today. love gardening in socal :)
Looking forward to grow potatoes next spring. Had some really good weather for November, it was awesome to be in double digits. But now a cold front is coming and it sucks. Did get some raspberries from my bush. Zone 5b out here.
Jacques and Kevin great videos, can you maybe do a video on comparing staring seeds indoor with heat mat and starting same seeds outdoor. same time and growth comparison
omg, I had to pause the video and order these potatoes. They are legendary in the UK, and I've never been able to find them in the US. They are pricey though, $20/lb! But I placed my order before they run out! Can't wait to try them!!
Boys... I cant plant potatoes with you. Theres 14" of fresh snow outside, and its 6°. I did finish your candles and the custom made containers they are in. Went with wood wicks. Check this out, concrete vessels, that are small planters after you burn the candles out.
The dude below is correct. I planted lil Yukon golds and red skinned minis that started eyes in my pantry (aka buried them in the ground). Came up the following year. Best of luck.
@@Neenerella333 I just harvested over 2000lbs of various potatoes. I leave plenty in the ground that will grow next spring. I don't even eat potatoes, except an occasional sweet potato. I donate them to the food bank. I have no reason to plant potatoes in the snow. I just like telling the boys about the weather in the north, in an artistic manner. 😁👍❤
I literally watched your video this morning on growing potatoes and 10 gallon bags, I'm thinking of doing something similar in my own Garden within the next 2 years. Growing them in buckets would probably be better for my situation though, since I'm pretty sure my bags will get infested with ants around my location, and it would be easier to grow them in barrel halves I think. ✌️
Ironically I’m in my kitchen getting my station ready to cut my seed potatoes and I thought I’d put on RUclips and this is the first video that pops up 😆
Ruth Stout lived in Topeka, Kansas - with average rainfall over 36". She could cover her potatoes with straw, not worry much about them and they would give her plenty to harvest. The scenario in California is different, though. California's rainfall is mainly in winter. Potatoes can withstand a light frost - not lower than 28 degrees F. If your winter isn't below 28 degrees F, then Stout's method and fall planting could work. California hardly rains at all in summer - so if you plant potatoes in spring after the last frost and they need summer water, then it would be a safer strategy to bury them in the ground.
I just watched the San Diego Seed Company video about potato growing, just before this one. She said that you don't want to slice the potatoes and immediately put them in the dirt. You'll have more success letting them scab over first, and start sprouting, before you put them in the ground....
Weirdly I haven’t had any luck growing from purchased seed potatoes so far. I’ve only had decent yields from grocery store potatoes that start sprouting on me.
Chitting is when we leave our potatoes in an egg carton or wherever before planting so they start sprouting, then we know to put them in the ground :) chitting is the process!
I still got my all blue, red skinned, and small Yukon babies in my raised bed veggie cage, plus some from the store that got chits in the pantry. Those latter ones seem to be a short season variety, because they sent up greenery at the end of the season. Which promptly got killed by and early frost. I wonder if they'll come back...
Sorry for out of subject question. I live in the Sonoran desert and get quite a few little lizards in my garden and I've seen them eating bugs and stuff. You being in California I figured you might get some too. What do you think of having these little critters around?
Great video. I noticed you had irrigation pipes on the raised bed. Do potates need a lot of water, how often do you water them and how much if not on the irrigation system.
You must have known this is what a lot of us were looking for. Were all of your potatoes purchased from Wood Prairie Family Farms? I'm in Murrieta and looking for other places to source good seed potatoes. It would be really helpful if you listed where we can get them. Great video as always. Love watching you guys.
Kevin, What happened to your experiment with Charles Downding. I’ve been waiting a long time to see you both have the follow up. Am I waiting for something that will never happen?
We've been planting yukon golds that we forget about in the pantry and they do well to grow and produce more potatoes in our garden. We've never been able to get sweet potatoes to do the same, is there a trick to planting grocery store sweet potatoes? I like to garden on the cheap, and buying seed potatoes is about $30+ so I'm looking for a more budget friendly way to grow potatoes.
I have tried to grow potatoes twice now and I get the green plant on top, looks nice and healthy then it starts to die, so I'm like ok time to harvest and I get so heartbroken to find MAYBE 3 tiny potatoes that I end up using to make myself a chicken soup with those 3 micro potatoes. What am I doing wrong? I hill it, hoping that more potatoes grow. I use compost, I used bone meal to promote tubular growth. Also, in growing in a large pot. I'm about to give up on the pastor which is supposed to be an easy crop 😢
I live in North County and can't plant in the ground because of the gophers. Do you have a gopher problem? I have 5 acres and have to grow in raised beds. I did however grow corn in the ground and the gophers didn't bother the corn.
Trying for first time. Where again can I buy these potatoes and do they just come chitted where u can just plant them or do I need to wait till they get eyes? I’m also in San Diego
I'm having success with growing a blue variety (courtesy my local grocery store) in a five-gallon grow bag on an apartment balcony, so I am saying "yes" if using a grow bag.
I successfully grow potatoes in 5 gallon Home Depot buckets with drain holes drilled into the bottom of each bucket. I start with about 6" of soil in the bucket and then as the plants get about 10" tall I "hill" or put about 4-5" of soil around the plants. I repeat this until I reach the top of each bucket. After that I just keep them watered and wait for the potato magic to happen. Good luck! - Rhonda
I just planted 6 sprouted russets from the store in 3 5 gallon buckets whole... Now I know to cut them and scab thwm. I was told doing that would make them rot. We are in the deep south bordering swamp land, so live and learn 😂 However, I did get 3 pounds of potatoes 🎉 and a bunch of those root vegetable larvas 😭🤦💔 They did only go after the whole rotten potatoes I planted... And did not touch a single one of the babies!!! Solarizing them with the soil in a kiddie pool right now to "compost and sterilize." I know nothing this is my first year 😂 I said if I got even one potato I'd be grateful. I am. Now... Searching videos on cucumbers 😳
I love your videos, but it is straw. NEVER HAY which is full of grass and weed seeds. All the seeds have of course been removed from the straw. I did my potatoes down a couple of inches, water well and cover with a thick layer of straw when I see the little plants come up. It a great job of suppressing weeds and keeps the moisture in our dry southern Saskatchewan summers. My only issue was the dear loved to bed down in the cool moist soil and did flatten a lot of the plants. They are planted in an area the second year after either horse or sheep manure (well-rotted of course). Huge production is the result. And lucky for my neighbors, I don't garden in the nude.
I need a glass of lemonade and sunglasses while watching you two garden❤️
I live inland San Diego and no other channel even comes close to helping me. I started with someone giving me a dead orchid and now I have 3 green houses with seeds, winter tomatoes, greens, lettuce and a passion fruit vine we had to build a custom trellis for! I use this company for my seed potatoes! I love them and had a wonderful harvest. Great company!
Glad to hear about this place in Maine…being from New England this will now be my new potato place!
This was easily one of my top 5 favourite potato unboxing videos. Thank you for that.
German Butterball is my absolute fav. I get so excited everytime I see someone talk about them
Wish I could grow potatoes in the ground, but dealing with all kinds of critters, I grow in buckets in a way that cost really nothing, and are SO successful for us, Thanks 😀
My potatoes are in the ground and growing! So exciting! 🎉

I did the same but different zone. Hope your crop went well ❤
I will be planting 'Sarpo Mira', Rocket, Swift, King Edward and Maris Piper
Chickens absolutely love those grubs and my friends said they get more eggs after a heavy feeding of them. I found 75 of them while turning a compost pile and the chickens went crazy.

Same here in SE Kentucky. Sweet potatoes did great in heat this year.
Daaaaamn Kev look at those biceps 💪🏾😍🤭
Love the newer collab style videos you guys make a great duo!!! Keep up the epic work🙏🏻 I have learned alot from the epic garden

Yes, please do a video on getting rid of grubs!
yes! ideas for how to take a shower/bath/wash in the garden. style, economic, comfort, privacy are important.
Thanks for the potato run-down!! Also, I obviously LOVED the humor 😂
Cannot wait until spring!
I'm not potato expert, but had success with all-blue many years ago.
I had a red, white & blue potato tower over the summer. 🇺🇸
(Grew Amarosa, French Fingerling & All Blue in a 3-tier Original GreenStalk.)
Still have a few left to roast or pressure cook. They are all super tasty and I wanna grow MORE next growing season!

I find myself with lots of green potatoes if I don't cover in some way. Mulch or a layer of compost seem to work nicely.
I wish someone talked about me the same way Kev talks about potatoes 😂

I grow my potato, btw, in 50 gallon grow bags. Plant March 17th (St Paddy's) and harvest late July, and then an immediate replant, each year
I can't wait to see how these do for you. I'm in Riverside County to the north of you.
I’m trying Austrian Crescent Fingerlings this year instead of Russian Fingerling. Several others as well. All in 15 gallon containers. This is my first Potato gardening adventure.
You always explain and make things seem so easy and fun. Thank you for all you do!
I am Def dedicating a bed or two to potatoes this year!!!
I learn so much from yous

Greetings from New Zealand. Great video as always. I just got your two books, really looking forward to getting into them 😊 Cheers.

Awesome guys 💪✌️

I grew All Blue this year and they are very good. Smooth flesh when boiled or roasted. If boiled they lose theirs color and turn the water green
Sarpo Mera potatoes are popular with English gardeners apparently. Enjoy!
Jacques and Kevin great videos, can you maybe do a video on comparing staring seeds indoor with heat mat and starting same seeds outdoor. same time and growth comparison

plant them in soda bottles/milk jugs and hang them on the wall
They will grow just plant them.
Brenda Brenda Brenda… Brenda. Where can i buy a candle. Also just reply but dont @ me youtube will delete your comment cause of my username.

My 3 Favorite potato varieties
Bamberger Hörnle
La Ratte
Belle de fontenay
Thanks for the tips!
What's Jaques channel. Love your channel! Always great beneficial information!

Definitely can tell you like your potatoes 🥔 there 😋 dude, maybe 🤔 that is why you have grown so much over the years 😉

Blue potatoes are from Chiloe Island in Chile
Kevin and Jeaque can you guys make a video on irrigation?????
They are frost sensitive so good luck with that. The first frost where I live is in a month from now but I am further North than you.
I low-key expected Kevin to show up from wherever he was hiding 🤣
my favorite thing about potatoes is that digging them up is like christmas. you never know what you're going to get.
Aloha hugs 🤗 I never knew there where so many verity God Bless you Im goingbto find that drill.
I am going to get a Bail of Hay.
It’s 2 am for me I have an exam tomorrow and I’m watching this
vey enjoyable to watch :)
The first 5 seconds and Jacque ALREADY is giggling 😂😂😂
Are all your potatoes determinate? If so, they don’t need hilling. If you’ve got indeterminate, then hilling will give you a better harvest.

I’m zone 9b (Bakersfield,ca) now is time to plant potatoes? What about sweet potatoes?
Please where can I get the Sarpo Mira. I have been looking for this potato. It does so well for British growers I see on ytube

Not going to lie I was disappointed at the lack of potato explosions lol
Where can I get seed potatoes now?
Where do you order your potatoes from?
I'm trying to grow sweet potatoes is it about the same way?
You missed the most important potato, Idaho Russet. This from an Idaho girl. The best fries and baked and hash browns and ……so on.
I love potatoes but we have a mole problem. :(
Edit…RAISED BEDS!! Okay, I’m doing this!
how much did those bags cost from wood prairie
what the name of the drilling device ? very long !
Im going to say that in a later video you had a mole....one way of getting rid of the grub worm. 😅
I applied all 3 spectrums of nematodes from Arbico and followed the directions. They did nothing. I had to dig the grubs out by hand.
I love your videos, but it is straw. NEVER HAY which is full of grass and weed seeds. All the seeds have of course been removed from the straw. I did my potatoes down a couple of inches, water well and cover with a thick layer of straw when I see the little plants come up. Can I plant potatoes in the fall? in 9bcCalifornia
Can you plant sweet potatoes now too?
Sweet potatoes are a different plant. They need heat
"Unless we get a lot of rain"
Me, knowing this past Tuesday was a rainstorm: 😬😬😬
We in Florida would have gladly sent Nicole to you, or anyone else ....
