  • Using our Peterbilt 389 with a Miller Industries, Century 1150R Rotator towing and recovery unit to lift a roofing truck from a precarious position it got into while attempting to exit a job site after unloading the roofing materials. Of course it had to be right underneath our "ARC" nemesis the overhead power lines (play on words). I meant to say ARC, not ARCH, because of the potential for an electrical ARC...get it??? Oh, yes, I'm trying to be "punny" on this one. I all seriousness, this was a dangerous and technical job. Thanks for watching and God bless.

That cribbing job makes me want to invent a proper crib for those situations. This might be saying too much but at the risk of giving others ideas on how to do it. It seems that if you're out rigging was ultimately pressing down on air, finding your level should be pretty easy. I know it would be one more thing to find space for but if I could make it work as well as it does in my head. And compact enough I think you would find the space.

  • @TheRealTronGuy
    @TheRealTronGuy 3 года назад +3

That was several months ago. By now, I bet Mike could have handled that job by himself.
How much space do you need between the boom and power lines? (Yeah, I know, a mile...) You never want to put the boom in a spot where if something snaps, the recoil pushes the boom into the lines, but aside from that, how much room do you leave to avoid an arc?

My hubby saw you hand over a hat to the man you picked up off the road that had kept his truck upright and on wheels after taking out a fair distance of cable. I glanced over and I’m sure I saw him drool over that hat just a little. I know you are a busy man but if you get hats to hand out to folks you have helped could you maybe just do a bit of different logo for us RUclips parishioners?
Also, I’d like to say that you do a very good job of editing on these. I enjoy watching the videos as I have learned SO much from them. Thankfully my hubby understands what you are doing with the snatch blocks and explained it to me in a way I could understand.

Ya know Ron, sometimes while watching your vids I get impatient with how you set up and get going. But it usually ends up that I see why you did something a certain way. You work on the "What if..." principle. Like today, yanking the truck backwards could have ripped the undercarriage to shreds. And the cribbing is to keep the truck stable. Who wants to see the 'Tator on a "Fail" video on its side or its back end!? Good job on Safety Ron. I liked how you told Mike to not be between the trucks when they are so tight together. Ron: "I know that truck isn't going to move, but..." stay out from in between. We can see on RUclips, etc. where someone ignored a precaution or 2 and destroyed property and/or lives. Those guys are hand nailing that roof. I didn’t think anyone did that anymore. Thought everyone used a air nailer.

A neighbor was having their roof worked on this year, unfortunately, they lived next to my house. So I got the pleasure of hearing the super obnoxiously loud conveyor truck, and all the hand hammering the entire job, no modern air nailers were used. They started work early in the morning too, so forget getting any good sleep. Then the contractor noticed my sagging roof, and tried to get a job out of me, I'm on a fixed income during a pandemic, I can't afford sheet, I told him no. lol

    Nice vid, Ron!
I'm always curious as to what it costs for these jobs.
I'm thinking that roofing company's insurance will get a bill for 2 grand or so?
    Either way, it's worth it.
Keep up the videos, always something to look forward to on my Fridays after work! :)

Great video Ron, have you not thought of buying those interlocking polypropylene blocks for supporting the stabiliser legs on uneven ground ?. Some are wedged shaped that provide a level base on sloping ground. You’ll probably find the local fire trucks carry similar kit to stabilise wrecks when they’re carrying out passenger extraction.
obviously more expensive that lumber blocks ( which also have their place) but are very versatile and well worth considering.

Great job keeping it safe! Those power lines are no joke. I unfortunately had a friend who died from a power line arc connecting with his rig while he was standing next to it. (he was doing test drilling of some sort to prepare for road work). Happened super quick, he died instantly.

I love watching what the rotator can do. It's maybe just me but I tend to associate it with grunt, pure power and strength. That's why I'm always amazed at the pinpoint accuracy you can achieve with it. There were angles everywhere on this lift: boom height; boom rotation; cable length; carriage position; the roofing truck's angle to the road; all constantly changing. Add in two different slopes to the land, as well as power lines, and you've got a tricky wee job.
The right man, using the right tool, and the job looks so ****** easy - well done to you both.👌

Lift and pull to the side. Eeee Z. Good job. Some would have used drag winch. No. That’ll tear up the grass. Easily lifting front axle off ground and pulling the truck to the side and lowering it onto the road is the correct way. 👍🏼

The truck driver got himself into quite the pickle, maybe he might take a few notes on the use of cribbing and blocking some sheets of 1 inch plywood to reduce the odds that he finds himself in that jam. It likely will happen again. If not, then a miracle was performed. Good work Ron and Mike. God Bless and continue to be careful out there.

It only takes a driver once to get one hung up bad. Makes you think about what not to do from there on out. Now off road work like this your taking a gamble on maneuvering about in areas like this. 34yrs and 4million miles driven and sometimes I got hung up. It inevitably happens. I've been on Rons hook once. Blew up a turbo going to a farm supply north of him. Glad he was available and very professional.

Never understand why drivers pull their trucks across roads knowing the truck is gonna basically high center & lose traction. Great job Ron & Mike. God Bless
