Hi, it's me again. The guy who wants to win the m2 giveaway so bad.
The most reason i want it so bad is because of my camera been canon eos m and to be honest the magic latern files are tough to work with, so i wish to win the laptop to easy my work flow.
It's cool test. 😀
Please tell me if it get hot when you do daily task ?? (Safari, youtube)
Waiting for new ipad pro.
Language RUclipsr here living in the UAE, hoping to win that M2 macbook air to get back in the content creation game. I bought my lenovo ideapad in 2019 when I had no idea I'd be making RUclips videos. Less than 10 videos in, my laptop slowed to a crawl and is currently wheezing it's last breath. I can barely edit word files on this thing let alone try to edit videos. So the M2 macbook air would be a dream come true right now, but no pressure though guys🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺
Would love to see a 16/512 M2 Air vs the Base 14“ M1 Pro. Keep up the great work!
Would love to see a M1 and M2 MacBook Air comparison with thermal tests.
You guys are doing a great job with the in depth analysis and comparisons. Keep up the great work. It is invaluable when choosing a machine to fit your workload and knowing it's limitations.
I remember people fearing that the M1 Air would throttle too much but honestly, it was never an issue when threw a somewhat complex 4K edit on it, when I used Logic or really at any other professional workflow. Sometimes it'd get warm but that's about it.
So I really don't think it will be a big issue with this one.
At the absolute hottest, I’m reaching 205-210f and that’s when I’m doing 4+ hours of very very very heavy sustained multitasking. That’s pretty good considering it’s a tiny thing with no fan
Looking forward to the comparison between the M1 and M2 airs in terms of heat and battery life.
exactly
Yes, me too.
@@rocketmunkey1 While I would prefer everything be 100% speed all the time; Imagine how impressive 4 minutes of full performance on battery would have been before the m1 came out. It was shocking when the M1 was able to do it for ~8 minutes. 4 is still far longer than I peg my M1 most weeks. All else being equal, I think i'd still rather have an M2 than the M1 air I have now.
@@cartossinI know this is a year after your comment above, but curious if you still feel that way? I’m right now considering an M1 or M2 MBA in base form with photo editing my heaviest load on a machine. If you’d still lean toward M2, can you let me know why? I assume the other features like the updated form factor, MagSafe, audio?
@@rocketmunkey1when you say 30% slower than M1, do you just mean the top speed of M1 or the sustained M1 performance during similar tests? Thought I understood the M1 also throttled but after 8 min instead of 4, but please correct me if I’m wrong. I’m actually looking at both M1 and M2 MBAs right now (even M3) but unsure if I need M2 or M3 with photo editing being my heaviest single workload and usually for 50 or fewer photos total in a session.
Still the most detailed and informative comparison on youtube. Well done Max!
We all know MBA will be great in day-to-day task. Love that you guys incorporate these types of workflow and tests since a lot of people are still looking to buy one but would not have enough money to go on full M1 Pro/Max. These test/and benchmarks are priceless to those people who are still confused and would want to see what they'll be getting. You guys are amazing!
The best review out there! The extensive tests are very helpful
Can’t wait to see the comparison with the 10-core and the m1. Thank you for your work.
Thanks for taking the time, and putting in the effort, to assess the performance of these M2 chips. No one else puts as much work into doing this, and I'm so appreciative.
Super useful in depth reviews and nerve-wracking tear downs! No other channel comes close to being as educational, informative and entertaining.
Needed this video!! I kept hearing about this, but thank you for going over this.
This in-depth review is amazing. Appreciate the effort u guys put in.
Looking forward for the modding with thermal pads and the impact of it. Thanks Max for such amazing test
Really glad that you are putting together all these videos! Super helpful and insightful!
Glad you're always here with us to explain each and everything
Thanks for the insight! Love that you focus on every concern and scenario that a potential buyer may have! Now I’m wondering how it’ll perform with a thermal pad.
Thanks for running those tests! I am pleasantly surprised that the CPU performance only dropped by 17%, and that is was using half the watts of the M2 MBP. Overall , those results are better than I thought. I can't wait to see the comparison tests.
Thank you this test this’s so helpful.
Love watching your review videos, they are very informative and thank you Max Tech for the extensive testings and comparisons!
This is so great-Your intense testing and entertaining content is so cool-I really appreciate your efforts and dedication!!!-You are so amazing-Keep it up-I can’t thank you enough for all your intensive testings-Keep it up!!.
I was kind of expecting that throttling as it doesn’t even have a fan-but hoped that it doesn’t happen-It’s unfortunate that it couldn’t maintain performance for long.
Your tear downs are so insightful! I would love to see a review of M2 MBA with the ideal specs from your point of view to optimise performance. Keep up the great work! 😊🙏
What I love about your videos is how quickly, yet thoroughly topics are explained. It makes it much easier to comprehend all the information. I'm a university student from Europe and could definitely use a new laptop for my studies. The weight and slim design of this laptop is perfect for a student like me.
These videos are really helpful! Thank you so much.
Definitely want to see if the performance will change with extra thermal pads, appreciate the hard work guys🙌🏻
it'll make the case hot asf but sure, it'll improve performance alright
@@bolttracks isn't it gonna lose the warranty?
@@bolttracks not sure if it’ll get that hot, likely too hot for long comfortable lap usage, but seeing the wattage of the chip it can’t reach super high temperatures as seen with intel or amd. It will need to heat up the entire chassis… but seeing the 108C is worrying.
You can edit the temperature profiles, so maybe if they set it at 85 with thermal pads connecting it to the chassis, it might be able keep a sustainable speed for a longer time without boiling the fineer from the desk. 🤪
They will surely make the backplate hotter than the legal surface temperatures referenced. Fine for station work, not good on your lap.
same here
I am definitely interested if modding it with thermal pads has a dramatic impact. Looking forward to that video, as well as the MacBook Air M1 comparison!
It will. But it will be more dangerous than that on previous gen. It's too hot & can burn your lap.
@@TechieBaby that’s a good point.
Thanks for the detailed info!
Appreciate the tests you do, you gave an actual insight on how these machines work, thank you!
Really interested in seeing what difference the thermal pads might make
I wonder how well the M2 air would handle high ambient temperature scenarios. It gets very toasty during summer here in AUS.
Great videos guys, happy i found your channel and you!
Thank you for all the test you have been doing on these new products with so much speed!
I'm less concerned with throttling than I am with how hot it runs. Thanks for sharing these tests.
Loving these videos! I’ve been waiting for this MacBook to come out for months, so I’m glad I finally get to see people use it!
Thank you for detailed explanation
Great video! I am looking forward to your rundown on the 16/512 model.
Awesome review! It heats up as expected. I've been eyeing the 24 GB variant so I'm curious on how the 24 GB MBA would perform and thermal throttle.
Very useful video. Thank you.
Thanks for all the info!
Great review as always! I’m wondering will the battery life changes if it runs with a thermal pad. It might get shorter if the system allows the chip to run at a higher wattage.
Definitely interested to check the comparison against MBA M1 / MBA M2 / MBP M2 but also with higher end configuration like performances with 16GB ram and 512 ssd. Thank you for the hard work providing these tests
yes, this!
Very Informative! Thank you!
These tests are comprehensive and super helpful. Thanks for the vid
I can’t wait to see how the battery life compares to the pro, halving the wattage for only a small drop in performance may help the air thrive
So informative. Thank you!!
Amazing testing under different scenarios, thanks for bringing this up to us
As expected. Was hoping they would give the chip a little more headroom but looks like they sacrificed the performance for a good looking chassis. That being said these chips are incredible for the wattage they are throwing at it! Maybe I can get my hands on one of these in the future. Great information and YES to the thermal pad video!
I decided to go with the base model 14” m1 pro after seeing the performance issues with the m2. I think i made the right choice since the price for the m2 air would be almost the same if you go with 512 gb storage. Interesting to se what you can improve with adding thermal pads!
Thanks for letting me know about the problem with something like this
Thanks for sharing this info on thermal throttling
I’m really surprised to see how well it performed despite it’s thinness and lack of active cooling through using a fan.
The best takeaway from this video, I found the terminal tool Max uses to track CPU frequency and wattage. For anyone wondering, it's a python package called asitop.
Appreciate these videos guys very helpful
Thanks for the video!
Thanks for the video! It seems like M1 was such a surprise and has set the bar of power/efficiency so high that we're awkwardly disappointed with the next generations.
Would love to see an overall performance comparison between M2 & M1 MBA in actual workflow such as video rendering despite the thermal throttling. Thanks! Really love your wonderful work!
Yes, waiting for this before making a decision. I love the small, light form factor of my m1 air, but the 8GB ram is a bottleneck that I can’t get around for my workload.
Thanks for the review. Very helpful!
tqsm for the honest, elaborate test!
That performance drop when doing the sustained load test seems quite impressive to me!
Loosing only 17% performance for a machine without a fan and that is designed for everyday use is amazing.
Yes these test have no affect on 99% of people.
This is why people are being over dramatic about it, IMO. Yes, it throttles more than the M1 does, but it’s still faster than the M1 in the same circumstances.
@@mbvglider cheap thermal pad of Amazon will probably solve that for people as well. Just turn it on if you a long running task
@@mbvglider Yep, people who need constant long performace will buy the new Macbook Pro. For most "home users" this M2 maschine is more than fast enough.
I'm interested to see how a 16 GB RAM / 512 (or higher) GB model performs -- does the extra SSD and additional RAM help
I'd think the 8/256 might perform better on the temp since you have a chokepoint at the SSD and ram which may prevent throttling and heating as much. Would be interesting to see the 8/256 test vs 16/256, 8/512, and 16/512.
Thanks so much!!great job
Thank you for the informative video!
Would be great to see a temperature/throttling test for different real work scenarios.
Very interesting results! I can't wait to see the comparison to the M1 MacBook Air side-by-side.
Thorough as always, thanks for these kind of reviews that are loaded with info and to the point
I finally decided to get the M1 Air for a couple of reasons:
- It’s still a very good laptop compared to other options for the same price
- Since it’s cheaper than the M2 i got to spend more on RAM and got the 16GB (and still ended up being cheaper than the base M2 model!)
I did the same the M2 feels like it’s not a big deal really like the M1. I prefer the older shape as well. M2 feels like a stopgap processor.
Same! I got the 16g ram and 512g ssd plus education pricing I got mines for about $1,100. 🥰 I think it's the better option imo.
Yes extra ram for less and that iconic design. Can't go wrong. Also, having had my one for over 1.5 years with 16GB, I have never found it wanting, I described it as the biggest step change in computing since the Dec Alpha
@@kiaragarcia3704 yeess education discount! I remembered right before paying that I could apply for it lol
The only thing I found better of the m2 base model vs the m1 16gb-512gb would be the blue color, and yeah... That doesn't worth the extra cash or the lack of ram-storage
Very informative, as always. I'm starting to think the sweet spot will be the M2 Pro. I have a MacBook Pro M1 and love it. A future M2 Pro with more cores, higher performance, larger heat envelope in a MacBook Pro 14" or 16", and active cooling should be impressive. I love my M1 Pro MacBook Pro 14". it's the best Mac I've ever owned (got it on sale for $1799).
Of course the M2 Pro will be better yet. But there’s a question of whether it will be released in the fall or pushed to spring.
Thank you for showing us such a good video in the first place
Excited to see a side by side with the M1!
im excited too
Just a heads up. You said 512g ssd in the beginning instead of 256g. I know you said base model but still may confuse some. Love the vids, guys, keep it up!
Thanks for the sharing
Definitely the most helpful review out there! Thank you so much for the videos!
I appreciate all the hard work you guys have done on this. I bought the M1 over the M2. Saved some $$ so I got an external SSD. Thanks!!!
Same here 😀, saved some cash to start my Home desktop Setup . Amazing decision 👍.
16GB M1 MBA and sabrient 2TB in Acasis controller is an off psu power house.
I would really like to see the gaming tests for this M2 MacBook Air, to see how much the thermal throttling affects the performance. Great video guys!!
I love watching your tests and love how you show the physical temperature!
Great video with so much explanation. Love them
I wonder why the bottom of the display is the hottest when the machine is pretty much at idle. Hmm…
If you're not working on heavy gpu works I think you'll do just fine with the base models. They perform great for content viewing and zoom business calls and little intense work. I'm happy that it didn't disappoint
Thanks for this informative video.
Thanks for the videos, keep up the great work!
This is a lot more thermal throttling than we saw with the M1 MacBook Air. I wonder if thermal pads will be enough to keep it cool this time.
I wonder if this is a trend that will continue to get worse with future Apple silicon in the MBA and if Apple will need to drop passive cooling all together.
I suspect that as Apple attempts to squeeze more performance out of their chip, you will come to a bottleneck where the M* chips will suffer from stability issues without active cooling and throttling.
Would be very interested in seeing the comparison of M2 Air with the M1 Air !!!
thanks for the review!!!
Thank you very much for your videos! They definitely help to make the right choice when deciding what to buy.
I'm still optimistic about the m2 even with that throttling. Can't wait to see the performance with the extra thermal pads. And if possible I wanna see how it fares with 2d motion graphics in after effect 😁
And The throttlling comes with significantly greater power savings which improves total energy usage for a given task compared to it running full throttle. So Apple has done a great job dynamically controlling the thermal curves vs heat and battery life.
And it is also important to note that these test are run at a typical US room temperature.
In Europe, air conditioning is not widespread, so ambient in door temperatures can readily be 25 to 30 deg C. There the priority of good short term burst performance, and energy efficient long term throttling, is even more important.
@@carstenthomsen9805 wow. Never thought of it like that. Thanks for the explanation
I have the base model 14-inch M1 Pro with 16GB RAM and 512GB and it's enough, but barely enough for what I do. I run Docker containers, MongoDB compass, Brave & Chrome (with avg 10 tabs each), VS code, Postman, Slack, etc.. and it usually doesn't run with any stutters. It will typically write about 1GB to swap. I would have liked to have gone for 32GB RAM upgrade, but I didn't want dish out an extra $400.
However, the unified memory is really fast and snappy, and the base M1 Pro should be more than enough even for 99% of productive users.
Thanks for a informative video.
Thanks for this. Your tests are always appreciated👍
I'd like to see it performing with Logic Pro in a recording/mixing scenario and if it thermal throttles at all that way. It would be very useful to me as I'm a composer/mixing engineer. So, a real-life scenario would be very helpful. Thanks for the insightful video! Cheers!
It would most likely keep slowing down the more real-time plugins and tracks you throw at it. I dont think the Air is a good choice for audio work. The only thing that it has going for it is that its dead silent, no noise from the fans. The Air is more suited to people who only need a laptop for light work like photoshop, writing and web browsing.
I wonder how well the thermal pads will help, maybe add a couple more mins on till it drastically loses performance?
Thank you for the video!
Loving the comparison videos and thank you for all the hardwork that you guys put in :)
The m2 compared to the m1 at similar performance is incredibly efficient, but it seems like as soon as it peeks in performance, the energy usage just goes nuts
I just checked with Apple. They said the 1tb model has just one NAND chip. Are you doing a 1tb teardown?
I would love to know
Great video! Amazing attention to detail with all your tests 👍
Thanks for your reviews, love your channel
M1 made me really excited for M2 Air refresh however it is underwhelming. Upgrading the ssd costs too much extra, Windows laptops give a tough competition at that price point.
Ssd upgrade is not worth it. Theres icloud or external drives you can buy. Ram is the only thing that is worth upgrading depending on your work flow.
MacBook Pro 14 went as low as $1650 USD on eBay, making it cheaper to buy than upgrading M2 MacBook Air and Pro to 16GB and 512GB.
@@romari2706 I would argue it depends on what you want to do.
@@romari2706 So you're one of those who thinks Apple is still expensive? LOL - Recent years have proven otherwise!! just saying!
@@romari2706 Maybe for your use cases but that doesn't mean it's like that for everybody.
Can the macbooks run heavy 3d modelling/rendering? Windows PCs are a much, much better option if you're doing those kind of workflows. You can't compare even the M1 max's GPU performance to NVIDIA's GPUs in 3d rendering especially in scenes with heavy lighting effects. Having dedicated raytracing cores to boost lighting simulations makes a world of a difference when compared to apple's non-raytracing GPUs.
I haven't even talked yet about gaming. If you game by the side then windows laptops are basically your only option.
Now don't get me wrong! The macbooks are no slouch! They are amazing machines and are by far the best performers for their use cases while being so efficient and so well built, but that doesn't mean windows laptops are useless. They may have inferior build quality, run hotter and louder with less battery life but depending on your use case, windows may be the only option.
Love the in-depth analysis that you guys get into, far more detailed than other channels. I think regardless of the throttling, the M2 MBA will be the ideal companion for those needing a lightweight but capable device.
Awesome stuff thanks!
