The number of Nightwish songs that have Nightcore versions, both, pleases and absolutely admonishes me. I love Nightwish, but know very few people who even know they exist. At least the internet knows they're not a myth!

mortelkilll nope. Death was different in both gender and form (from belief to belief - celtic, hindu, etc).
The Grim Reaper itself became quite "popular" at the 15th century and was firstly shown as a skeleton holding a scythe (later it would be added a mantle and some people believe death even had fragments of armor).
Anyway, Death as it is most commonly known is: Angel of Death, a supposed Angel that God put in charge of taking the souls of those that died to either Heaven or Hell (according to catholic belief, the angel's name is Michael -an archangel no less). Still, beliefs change according to their country, so there are other informations about Death in Islam and stuff. Check wikipedia for more info or go to the nearest library :D
Death has ALWAYS been portrayed as a purely neutral entity when it comes to their true forms, though the gender and look does vary if at all. Death is the neutral force of nature which is tasked with fetching the souls of the dead and leading them either to salvation or damnation respectively.
