It sounds to me like they sped the song up slightly to fit it into the time slot. That could explain why he’s a little uncomfortable. I’ve seen the show twice and he was spot on both times!
It’s defintiely slightly above tempo - they did the same to Six on one of their live performances (I want to say BGT?) and it really impacts the performer

You definitely need to watch the full version that they filmed and released, he does a better performance.
I do think nerves is a major issue, he'syoung and this is the Olivier's, it's the equivalent of a young guy making his Broadway debut and then performing at the Tony's, it's a massive deal for him.

2. Dancing
3. Nerves
Look at it means beautiful or spotlight or the song everybody’s talking about Jamie they are some of my favourite songs from the show

They DEFINITELY sped up the song so it’s throwing him off a bit. Not to mention he’s dancing his ASS off. And also, the vocal flips are intended. That’s how it was recorded as well.
He still slayed that performance!!!
I cannot tell you how much I love Jamie. I saw it in London, and it was SO COOL! Maybe I'm just partial to it because I'm a gay teen named Jamie who wants to be a performer (although I don't do drag.) Layton Williams was playing Jamie then, and he was doing it on the tour before theaters closed for covid. He's amazing, and I know there's a couple videos of him floating around youtube, so if you get the chance I would definitely encourage you to check him out!
I saw Layton as Angel in Rent and he KILLED it!

Yeah that’s totally possible! I haven’t seen him perform before so I don’t have anything to compare it to.
There’s another song he sings called wall in my head which has much less choreography and a lot more vocals, maybe if you would like something to compare it to listen to that!
I think it’s also because he sings in a Sheffield accent which they pull of perfectly

I heard that John isn’t a fan of doing the press junkets and public appearances although I’ve seen Jamie 3 times, twice with john and he absolutely nailed it both times. Love your channel though. X
Ok. You can tell by my username that I am a massive fan of John, I have a fanpage on tiktok and I’ve gotten about 10’8k followers. I disagree with some of the stuff you are saying, if you watch any other version of this song u would see that any other actor who has played Jamie does the same thing with the high notes. He’s running out of breath becuase he’s dancing and running about. LOADS! he’s obviously panicking because I believe that this is the first time he’s performed at an award show. No wonder he was running out of breath!

@@SongsFromASuitcase of course :) was only suggesting in your own time as it’s a short song, I saw John over 70 times in the role and am friends with him :) I’ve auditioned for the part myself but then covid hit
John was more tied back in olivier's than one stage as the band did not help him as they are simply not used to help in the Albert Hall

The song is sped up in this and this was his first television performance so he was probably very nervous. I’ve seen him videos when he’s in actual musical and he’s amazing so much better and more comfortable

Yeah he is a smoker but there are definitely better performances but they are like a recorded performances for cinema that shouldnt be on RUclips but are which is great

i love john and this show but, as is the case with most olivier performances, this was not the best performance
there’s a legal recording of this show that i think is on youtube where they all sound a lot better !!
also, i think another reason he sounds breathy is because the royal albert hall theatre is *a lot* bigger than the one they perform in normally, so they’re dancing around a lot more than usual to fill the stage properly

Id like to see you sing that well whilst dancing around everywhere, don’t say “is he a smoker” or “he’s uncomfortable” if u were put on stage at a giant award show your gonna be nervous and he’s probably 50x better than you. Also sort that black thing on your tooth out.

I agree. I only just watched the entire musical on RUclips last night. No hint of breathlessness throughout that entire performance.
There are definitely better performances. I think he focused more on dancing and acting.
