No, get the most important words of the language out of the way. There are many options and what you pick isn't that important as most core decks (most common words in the language) share many similarities, but you should pay attention to two things: 1. No more than a few thousand cards. It is critical to not spend too much time on core decks and move on to mining (explained in detail on this site). That is not happening any time soon if you are doing Core30k. 2. Cards should be voiced. Make no mistake; you are still mostly incapable of correctly perceiving said language sounds and only thousands of hours of auditory input will fix that. A core deck with audio by natives in said language is a good way to start.
It’s so true about the negative influences. I had 2 Spanish professors stunt my Spanish speaking skills, but I can understand up until a certain point. I used to be fluent speaking it and now I wish I hadn’t let them take my shine. I’m learning Korean (have been for 10 years) on and off and my problem is staying consistent and finding time to practice. I understand most of what is being said and I watched a K-drama before realizing I didn’t have the subs on, but my speaking skills aren’t there.
With the first point, I've told many people that I'm learning Japanese and the vast majority of them have been very supportive. It has even influenced my mom and one of my friends to start on their own language learning journey. So I'd say take that piece of advice with a grain of salt, personally.
I have a weird wiring because every time someone tells me I can't I get this fire in me to just prove that I can... not to them but to myself. When I got my first puppy people told me "you can't expect a small dog to be as well behaved as a big dog" and in 3 years I had the most well behaved dog in the entire area. When people tell me I should learn something easier and more useful like Spanish or French it just makes me defiant. The people that know me the best just says "if anyone can do it it's you because you're the most strong willed person I know." I love thats how my friends see me. Goal driven and an achiever. ❤
something that im doing is because im not a native chinese speaker,i treat myself as such.i looked up chinese children books, worksheets, nursery rymes and videos so i can start easy and work my way up.its helped so far and i watch peppa pig in chinese with pinyin at the bottom.i also like music in different languages so thats no issue for me.the only tough thing is the consistent.
Being consistent is definitely my problem. I start with 1-2h, 3-4 times a week, then 1h 2 times, etc.. and eventually I just stop doing it. I need to work on myself. >
Okay but I am listening to my target language by watching tv shows but understand none of it, surely you have to build up vocab to actually understand what you’re hearing before you jump right in to immerse yourself.
sure, but immersion on its own, naturally words will become to have more meaning and sound less and less like running sentences that never end. i did immersion of like 4-6hours each day for like two weeks and I went from understanding 2 percent to about 15. I only knew like 300-500 words at that time
I feel like I don't understand how to properly do immersion. I tried learning a language for nearly 2 years, and got no where, and I did listen to podcasts, watched videos and movies, all in the language. It felt useless though because I felt like after a while I just stopped paying attention since I couldn't understand what was being said. Like is there any benefit to just passively listening to a language you don't understand, and if not, how do you actively listen when you don't understand what's being said?
From watching many of your VR videos, just a little tip which will make your Chinese sound much better. Make sure you don't use the word 是 so much. 是 is only used for nouns. When used for adjectives it just sounded really strange.
I've seen alot of things that say to listen and read the stuff is one of the most effective and to a certian extent that makes alot of sense to me. i have learned alot of korean words, i know alittle bit of how the grammar works and can read hangul but i have been listening to kpop, watching kdrama and korean reality shoes since i was 5. Even with the little korean i know i still can only understand a few words when i read and can't follow along to natural conversations as well as i'd like. i want to know how to get to that level that you can generally follow a conversation or a book in that language. because just listening and reading isn't helping me enough.
I totally agree dude. This is part of the main reason why I've pardoned, downgraded, or excused several "friends" from my life's path. #OmitNeysayers #CtlAltDelNeysayers #ForGiveMeUniverseForNotBeingSorryForTakenAction
I think what you said is true because 2 year ago I can't even speak English. Just because I watched to many English video like vr chat yt video and reaction video and playing games make me want to know the meaning
I just don't like to talk even in my native language especially with strangers or people I don't usually interact with or know well, even when I decide to speak i can't keep the conversation on and the people most of the time are not interested in that
I think, a lot of the times it's nerves. I do not have many people to speak my language to so, it's fear of "messing up." I know how the language is supposed to sound.
I found a common soaniah textbook/workbook and I made it fun with the story questions. I could add in detail and say whatever I want. I thought it was quite funny.
1. My folks are kinda supportive, though sometimes my brother tells me that Korean is better than Indonesian. There's almost nobody discouraging me. They're used to my sudden urges to study a language out of nowhere. 2. Immersion...well, Indonesian doesn't have much sources to immerse in (same for Malay). Netflix has too few movies/shows available at my location. I'm trying nonetheless. 3. I am not really sure what gets my dopamine going. Unlike many other people learning in a classroom is not boring for me. But courses for Indonesian...nonexistent where I'm at and I'll have to stick with the apps I have. So far so good. If it's not rude or too personal, will you be able to walk again? Is this situation just temporary and will end after treatment? I really wish so, all the best.
Is changing the language on your phone worth it as a beginner? I go back and forth on this cause then I will take too much time figuring out what everything says on my phone
Yes. It’s tedious and sometimes annoying at first, but it pays off big time when you are on the other side. Don’t feel bad about looking the same stuff up over and over again, you will remember it after enough times. Good luck.
I’d say that if you’re a complete beginner, learn how to read the script first and have some basic to intermediate vocabulary before having your phone in that language. I found that it really does help in immersion, but it could be too overwhelming for a beginner to dive in to immediately.
It didn't work to me. Reading with translation and trying to speak is better. Talking to yourself in your target language is OK if you didn't have someone to talk to.
To speak another language, you need to be away from negative influences, learn the language thoroughly through immersion in order to increase your speaking potential, stay consistent and one other thing!

Why does this feel like it’s directed towards me?
Merci Beaucoup Ikenna
I've been watching quite a bit of your videos now, I'd totally be down to get onto your learning app
Love your vids
Hey, i bought assimil course but i confused about "how to use it" please help me out about this.
I started learning Japanese last month
Felt attacked with that "2000 years" lolololol
something that im doing is because im not a native chinese speaker,i treat myself as such.i looked up chinese children books, worksheets, nursery rymes and videos so i can start easy and work my way up.its helped so far and i watch peppa pig in chinese with pinyin at the bottom.i also like music in different languages so thats no issue for me.the only tough thing is the consistent.
I will follow the dopamine current
you don’t like people and speak so many languages to understand more of those people? that’s masochist! 😆
I only knew like 300-500 words at that time
oh, and 0 subtitles.
Can't wait for you to learn Norwegian one day 😁Lykke til!
1:47 PLEASEE YOU HAD THE PERFECT MOMENT TO SAY SOMWTING IN JAPANESE THERE
I feel like I don't understand how to properly do immersion.
Is the app you're working on going to be free, subscription-based, or a one-time purchase?
I remember my aunt saying "why are you learning Japanese? Spanish is more useful." It hurt a lot
I could listen to my favourite band's different languaged song (that they do have english versions of)
I've seen alot of things that say to listen and read the stuff is one of the most effective and to a certian extent that makes alot of sense to me. i have learned alot of korean words, i know alittle bit of how the grammar works and can read hangul but i have been listening to kpop, watching kdrama and korean reality shoes since i was 5.
The first thing that came to my mind on the first problem I have no friends
I think what you said is true because 2 year ago I can't even speak English. Just because I watched to many English video like vr chat yt video and reaction video and playing games make me want to know the meaning
Wassup 👑KING👑
cool!
nice one
me seeing rimuru : *instantly get on my knees*
waiting for orders master.
I just don't like to talk even in my native language especially with strangers or people I don't usually interact with or know well, even when I decide to speak i can't keep the conversation on and the people most of the time are not interested in that
Hello, Ikenna.
How are you feeling so far.
I hope you are recovery.
I wish you a quick recovery.
God's Miracle Will Find You.
Amen.
2:00 The caos behind is just..
What’s up Broski 🦋..
I think, a lot of the times it's nerves. I do not have many people to speak my language to so, it's fear of "messing up." I know how the language is supposed to sound.
Damn u commented like 50 times tf in 1 minute
Would be cool if you did some your videos in the other languages you speak instead of just English. It would motivate others more.
0:42 Big oof
The best motivation :V
I found a common soaniah textbook/workbook and I made it fun with the story questions. I could add in detail and say whatever I want. I thought it was quite funny.
Can you explain to us how did you animated your self in the video please .and love you sir 🥰
Joke's on you, I can't speak in general! It's called anxiety.
To boost ur immersion have u checked indonesian pod 101? Thats the only Indonesian resource i can think of
Will norwegian be in your app?
my guy I haven't spoken to anyone in person other than family for months that and I have social anxiety so its harder to actually socialize
