Turning Fallen Trees into Something USEFUL 🌱

- Not that we needed any more building projects on our plate, but this DIY wattle garden bed was a great way to repurpose the fallen trees from our storm damage into something that will continue to give life on the property. We had never built anything with the "wattle" design before, but now we can see why people have been using it for centuries!

I think it will hold up longer than you think. The sticks being above ground should dry out and stay fairly preserved.
That's the hope! We thought about putting a liner in of some sort to separate the soil from the sticks, but pretty sure we will just pad the bottom up with logs and fill just enough soil on top. Hopefully that helps with drainage/drying a little
Very cool!
I made something similar out of cedar branches. The squirrels love to dig it out…😂 I will add to it some this winter as it isn’t nearly as tall as the one you guys made. I saw the spent oil comment…maybe that will deter the squirrels too. Nice job!
Really? Oh man! We might have some squirrels doing that to ours once we fill it. We have lots of squirrels. We decided to make it pretty tall for ergonomics!
What a great idea to reuse the old growth trees. Tons of work though, I wonder how to beds will last overtime? Will the walls just become more compost? I wonder how long that will take haha.
Good question, we aren't sure yet! If they start to collapse over time we plan to stack stone walls around the bed! Hopefully they last a couple of years 🤞
Cool idea
We knew we wanted to reuse as much of the trees as possible so we figured this was worth a try!
You really went out on a limb here.
😆
That height did not keep rabbits out of our bed, I had to go another 36" with chicken wire to combat their vertical leap but this is a really cool idea!
Oh my gosh you have some very acrobatic rabbits🤣
I have ground squirrels. We need hardware cloth enclosures with rock or brick floors.
Do you think the dirt will push the walls out ?
We will fill the bottom with sticks and logs with only the top 10-12" filled with soil, really not sure how well it will hold once everything breaks down and becomes soil! Time will tell 😁
not sure but I think you need to char the ends of the stakes before use.
Wonderful idea that you guys have build a raised bed out of fallens. What you can do to make it more durable and last longer is to apply burn engine oil as paint. This will help the sticks water resistant and also resistant to terminate and other wood insects. You can apply every year and it probably lasts for 3-5 years if there is no structural damage.
Hope you will do. #theroamingatlas
Thank you for the tip! Does that impact the soil when you plant your garden? We will have to look into it!
@@MasonDixonAcres No it doesn't impact your gardens or plants. Its like coloring your fencing.
Very handsome!
Stink bugs. They smell like cilantro to me. 😂😂😂
😂😂😂
Love you guys! Keep grinding! xplrnw ✌🏻
