    Just stubbled onto your channel. I work as a writer, based in Europe and repped in L.A - I have to say managers & Agents are difficult. They blow hot and cold, they're super exctied and talk to you all the time or there's nothing... until you're flavour of the month again. I'm repped by top 10 Agency and I haven't signed a contract and someone who I write for (A well known director) hasn't signed a contract with them either.
    Just to say - I have faith in you, to keep writing and then finding the true person who can be you advocate.

    Tweeting about "Living my best life in Europe." Reminds me of the lesson I learned from my first manager. You don't want a rep who has no financial need to make money off you. Why should they hustle to get you work when they don't need your measly 10%? Anyone trying to get their foot in the door needs to find a yep as hungry as they are. Cheers.

    I definitely feel with you after hearing this... Since I’m a screenwriter from Europe, I would much prefer to video chat with a potential manager than to call by phone. Hopefully I can get a better impression of the manager by seeing them as we talk.
    I’ll take with me from your experience that we screenwriters are *definitely* in the right to pose critical questions and make certain demands for our own protection.
    P.S. Cool that you’re a fan of Film Courage! 🥳

    Hey Jay... totally understand your frustration but, as a musician/writer, no matter how talented you are, there are no guarantees in any of the creative arts. I work with incredible bands and musicians who can't make a living doing their art. But we all continue doing it anyway because one really has to love the art form implicitly, otherwise it's really just a means to an end. I know people who are doing alright out of their music but are still complaining! Personally, I admire artists who are OK with their failure because, hopefully, the little victories we gain along the way can be enough. Always try to celebrate the small victories. Hang in there bro!

    You just have to keep going. It’s so easy to get angry and discouraged because this is such an obscure industry at times. This manager should not have led you on, but it was not a year wasted-It sounds like you’ve put in a lot of work developing projects during this period of time. You sound like a very smart, and experienced writer… so just KEEP SWINGING. Like you said, there’s so many mediocre writers that are repped, that forces me to believe that it’s not the most talented people who make it, it’s the most TENACIOUS.

    I know you might say, “Meh” to this. The agent might not be big but we have to let them know that YOU are BIG. Agent you don’t have a contract no problem. I have one and it’s for both of our protection. In fact once you see my work you will want to be attached to me before the money comes.

    Jay, insightful video that I am glad I watched.
    But I had to watch it at 1.5x speed in order to get to the value before completely losing interest.
    I've not seen other content of yours - and regardless of my appreciation of this video's lesson - I don't expect to seek any on purpose. The pace of your anecdote is just too plodding to risk wasting my time when another source can deliver its value in a more-efficient timeframe.
    I hope I'm not coming off as some attention-deficit twitchy nut. My intent is simply food for thought; not a trolling or neg just to be an ass. Plenty of that without me adding grief.
    So circling back in order to end on a positive note: Your message here has value and I appreciate being able to add its insight to my own endeavors.
    Cheers

    Writers gotta stop jumping through hoops like circus animals. The biggest myth screenwriters have accepted is the myth that they need a manager. Prior to the late 90s writers having managers was barely a thing and the industry ran much better and content was better imo. Managers treat their own time as precious and writers’ time as worthless. There is no excuse for writers not to make their own projects in this day and age unless they want to workin tv, in which case those writers should focus on the tv fellowship programs.

    • @JayFingers
      @JayFingers Год назад +1

      You’re 💯 percent correct, Marlon. IMO managers just make it easier to break in since they supposedly have the connections already. And really, all that’s needed to break in is that one advocate. But you’re right, it’s easier now more than ever to create a project and get yourself out there. That’s something I’m definitely working on. Thanks for commenting! ✊🏾

      20:45 welcome to Hollywood again! This is why it’s best to move on before getting dropped. Which you took the step to get clarification. Too easy to get lost in the sauce. These LA Agents are paid commission and their mind is on whatever is paying. So you were hippocketed and then he just forgot to give you love. Good to be proactive and move on instead of being moved ON.
