Cover the break in 1st gear and purposely pop the front end up to high and force your self to hit the break! It will develop your muscle memory. Do this over and over for a few hours and you will be rideing high speed wheelies in no time! It will get you over the fear once you realize you can always save yourself from flipping backwards! Anyway good stuff Pete!

This is one area, where I definitely need some practice! When I was in my 20's, I could wheelie all day, and not even think about it. But now that I'm in my 40's, I can't help but think about the consequences of screwing up! I have wheelied off camera a few times( nothing to brag about though) here recently, and plan to spend some time getting comfortable doing it again. It's a skill that's needed for serious trail riding.
If you could do it back in the day I bet you'd be surprised how fast the muscle memory would come back! Its definitely a good skill to have in many instances on the trails!
@@PeteHager True! I know I can still do it, just need some practice getting my timing right, so I don't have to work so hard to keep it up. I've got to get some new tires as well! I have a hard time getting enough traction to pull it up, without running the tires slack. it's time to retire the stock tires though, lol. They are worn out!
Dude this video taught me how to do low gear wheelies in about 10 minutes today. Still have alot to learn but I felt alot more comfortable attempting them with your methods and it definitely helped alot! Thanks!
Thats so awesome to hear man! Glad I could help. I'm not nearly as skilled as some riders are with the slower wheelies though, I just like the fast ones haha
Foot in the grab bar and other down by rear brake is for sure the easiest to start, getting it up is quick to happen, but for the carb quads it’s kinda time consuming to learn the feathering of the throttle and learning the delay of the carb vs fuel injected, he mentions it a lot and timing takes time, good luck. I’ve ordered a xfr wide grab bar to help protect the rear and since I have the pure Polaris exhaust on my predator 500 it sticks out several inches farther, just a point while practicing cause you will go back to far if ya don’t hit the brake in time but having your foot in the grab bar it will allow you to so called walk the quad
Never had a "quad"(grew up on sportsmans) just picked up a raptor 250 to play around on and pass to my kids. Surprised that little thing popped up the front end end 2nd gear! Thanks for the tips I cant wait to actually try to ride one out lol
I went through the same experience getting to where I am now. My scrambler grab bar definitely got beat up and I wheelied my KTM over a handful of times. You'll get there
@@PeteHager what hight to you have your foot break at? I have trouble with not being able to to press it when starting to go backwards! maybe I have mine to low
Learned on a 250X then graduated to 250R and Banshee wheelies. 4 strokes are ao much easier to wheelie it is like cheating. Gotta work the clutch throttle balance and rear brake
The technique i use on wheelie while i setting down i use the clutch to do wheelies for a slow wheelie and i can shift and control the gear transmission as i want i love ur video ❤️

I'm not new to wheelies but found the video interesting anyway. I also have a scrambler (I miss having a manual clutch considering a Honda 400ex sometime) and yes they more difficult to wheelie. Mine has a lot of wheel speed and needs to be pretty dry out or on pavement or else it will just spin. Another nice video. Keep em coming Pete!
awesome video and explanation. I personally don't feel comfortable yet doing wheelies for other than just a quick pop because I'm going down something I need to touch the rear tires first (like dropping from elevations). We'll see in the future!
For a scrambler sence they have a belt drive transmission you hold the front break get high rpm's and let go of the break and jerk on the handle bars. P.s a scrambler 1000r is a really good quad great for trails and they ride really smooth

Dirt or grass would surely be better on the body and the quad if you fell off or went to far backwards but for me, learning to wheelie on the asphalt was easier at getting the front to come up and hold it because of the traction factor. Hey Rob, Thanks for watching my videos! Congrats on getting a new Raptor! I normally always ride with boots and riding pants so I don't notice the heat from the exhaust much at all. I'm not sure what you're wearing but most pipes are gonna give off the same amount of heat. I don't recommend heat wrapping your exhaust but some some guys do it. If you go that route I know you're supposed to leave the first portion of the header exposed so the heat can dissipate better. Some companies like Fourwerx make heat shields for the header as well 👍
Do a video on rider positioning while cornering. I see alot of riders using their body weight to get the bike to gain traction around corners. I don't understand where to put my body when cornering. I feel like I'm about to slide off.
Pete Hager thanks man! I’ve been watching your videos nonstop for the past week. I’ve been on edge about getting a 2020 raptor and looked up some video. You popped up in my recommended the next day. lol
Great channel same style i do wheelies while i stand but sitting i clutch up allows me to run through gears like you mentioned standing up its tricky why its better to stand to do fly by wheelies!!
With a sport quad, would I be able to off road close to what a dirt bike can do? And ride in a ok amount of snow? Or ride in a farm field? And do decent mudding? And any suggestions on a sport quad? I just want one to causally ride around with my buddy’s in the farm field’s
dirt bikes are on another level. I'm not an experienced dirt biker but I've ridden with them and they're very capable. They're much faster than quads in rough terrain. I've always loved quads and I think they're super fun to ride, there's just something about power sliding that is so priceless. Sport quads do okay in snow but 4x4's work way better, same goes for mudding. If your adamant on a sport quad and have limited experience it may be wise to start with something like a Honda 400ex or a Suzuki Z400. They're great starter quads because they're reliable and affordable. If you want something with more power then it's hard to be the reliability of the Raptor 700. Otherwise you could go the sport 4x4 route like the Can Am Renegade 1000 or Polaris Scrambler 1000. Once again, if you're a newer rider it's wise to start with a less powerful machine. Also consider what machines your buddies are riding. If they're all on 4x4's you may want to run a similar machine otherwise a sport quad could struggle at times
I would assume you'd want to run a bit lower tire pressure. Still keep them even but if they have more squish you'll be able to direct the quad more by leaning. At least thats what I see guy's doing that are on the pavement 👍
Unfortunately I don't have any experience doing wheelies on a 2 stroke.. I would assume it's a bit trickier with the snappy power band. I saw a guy with a how to wheelie video that was on a banshee. Maybe he has some 2 stroke related tips
Pete I'm a huge subscriber and I'm always watching your videos the end of this video you doing the wheelie on the iced lake was so cool ..keep bring them on..do you have a name you call your raptor?
Been watching your videos for a few months now an just noticed your from Minnesota! We have a good Friday ride outside Superior WI! Let me know if you are interested!
Definitely interested! I rode near superior Wisconsin many years ago and it was some of the best riding i've ever done! Shoot me a facebook friend request so we can stay in touch!
I really wanna learn to wheelie but I don’t know if I’m willing to put the 2020 raptor at risk. It’s to new of a unit if I crash it it’s gonna bum me out.
BRAAAP Outdoor Adventures just lower the throttle and you’ll come back down pretty quick. You always have that rear brake too. Definitely start slower until your comfortable 👍
And of course they didn’t. Heh. Story of my life. Gotta love living this American dream. Should go back to selling drugs. Made more money. And it wasn’t taxed.
Maybe you should nut up and quit blaming the world for your shīt life. No man I know, care about or respect has any sympothy for a pity fueled, self loathing idiot. Good luck 🙊
I've got the wheelie thing almost down, just can't really figure out how to counter steer when it starts veering toward the ditch. Fyi my tire pressure is good.
Colton Sackett I would keep playing with your PSI. Leaning towards one side of the quad can definitely cause it to turn that direction. Hopefully you can get it dialed in and the quad will wheelie straighter for you 👍
Idk if you respond to comment but I have a raptor 700 and I just got a kn air filter and a big gun exhaust do you think I need the fuel injection programmer or would it be bad for my quad
I have the Pro Taper Contour in the ATV Mid bend. I'd say they're about half the height of the factory Raptor bars. I'm 5'10 and at first they felt a little low but I got used to them. If your taller then me I would recommend going for the ATV high or sticking with the Raptor bend. You'll also need oversized clamps since these are oversized bars. I have the clamp kit and atv mid bars linked in my video descriptions 👍
So wait I’m a noob to wheelies and i have a question, if i brake while i wheelie that makes the wheelie stop i guess correct? I’m super new to stuff like wheelies in the past i guess i’d never had interest in em.
One u feel it out you can use it to controller the wheelie instead if stopping it, you can get into the balance point and ride the brake instead of doing power wheelies
@@geegonebadoin I should specify that upshifting is fine. I do it now and then but my muscle memory keeps me using the clutch. Never downshift without the clutch. That could cause problems 👍
@@geegonebadoin it’s a lot easier to get the less HP machines up with a knee on the seat. Most people that shift while wheelieing are sitting down at the balance point. If your brand new just start practicing in the grass in 1st/2nd gear. I’ve wheelied over several times and I definitely worked my way up to 3rd and 4th gear
Sorry for my late response. They're the Pro Taper contour in the "ATV Mid" bend. I'm about 5'10 and I thought they seemed kind of low at first but I've happily gotten used to them. If your taller then me I would recommended the "ATV High" or "Raptor Bend". You also need oversized clamps for the oversized bars. I have everything linked down below. Just make sure you source the appropriate bar height 👍

Was hoping to get some info on how your able to steer while in a wheelie.
I would assume you'd want to run a bit lower tire pressure. Still keep them even but if they have more squish you'll be able to direct the quad more by leaning. At least thats what I see guy's doing that are on the pavement 👍
@@PeteHager thank you, will keep that in mind
Any tips of doing wheelies on a 2 stroke quad?
Unfortunately I don't have any experience doing wheelies on a 2 stroke.. I would assume it's a bit trickier with the snappy power band. I saw a guy with a how to wheelie video that was on a banshee. Maybe he has some 2 stroke related tips
stay in the power band!
Will do. Allen olaf jensrud
Damn sick wheelie bro
do you think i should be looking for a yamaha raptro 700/700r or a can am ds 450?
Hey Pete! Are you running a stock sprocket setup?
I'm running a 15 tooth front sprocket now. When this was filmed I had stock gearing 👍
I really wanna learn to wheelie but I don’t know if I’m willing to put the 2020 raptor at risk. It’s to new of a unit if I crash it it’s gonna bum me out.
Wheeling is one thing but how do you ride on the just the two side wheels
My dad was chocked at seeing me wheelie my trx450r at 13
I started riding wheelies at 13 on my 250X. Had to do it uphill so I could get the timing right.
So to go back down you just lean forward? I'm new to riding and I'd rather be overly cautious about flipping back until I get my chest protector.
BRAAAP Outdoor Adventures just lower the throttle and you’ll come back down pretty quick. You always have that rear brake too. Definitely start slower until your comfortable 👍
@@PeteHager yeah I also thought you let off the throttle a bit lol
good video ;D I try tommorow
:) Me too
If the bank lets me get the 700 raptor I’m going to quit drinking. Please oh please. I need a healthy addiction.
And of course they didn’t. Heh. Story of my life. Gotta love living this American dream. Should go back to selling drugs. Made more money. And it wasn’t taxed.
Cody Call bruh you dont need the raptor 700 to do wheelies you can do wheelies on a 125 if you are really trying
I can do a wheelie on a fucking 50
And have to owe the bank later not good
Maybe you should nut up and quit blaming the world for your shīt life. No man I know, care about or respect has any sympothy for a pity fueled, self loathing idiot. Good luck 🙊
Nice bro. Your a true ripper. I love that s....t
Thanks for the clean explanation man
Good fucken video...
Your Welcome 👍
Thanks. Very helpful!
Hopefully you can get it dialed in and the quad will wheelie straighter for you 👍
@@PeteHager I'll work on that, thx!
hi can i use this part wheelie in my compilation? full credited
Sorry I missed this comment. Your good to use some wheelie clips if you want, thanks for crediting me 😊
Idk if you respond to comment but I have a raptor 700 and I just got a kn air filter and a big gun exhaust do you think I need the fuel injection programmer or would it be bad for my quad
If your changing your intake and exhaust you most definitely need a fuel controller or your machine wont run correctly 👍
Pete Hager alright thank you!!
🔥🔥🔥
What size are the Pro Taper bars you have on the Raptor? Low bend / Race bend?
Yes it will come down
One u feel it out you can use it to controller the wheelie instead if stopping it, you can get into the balance point and ride the brake instead of doing power wheelies
Cjleh757's rc, Aight, thanks.
@@jakeneal7355 I got pretty good the past few days at my slow wheelies, how u been doing?
In order to shift up while doing a wheelie do you have to use the clutch or can you just shift up
You don’t have to use the clutch when your shifting, it really comes down to personal preference
@@PeteHager thank you because I thought doing that would blow it up
@@geegonebadoin I should specify that upshifting is fine. I do it now and then but my muscle memory keeps me using the clutch. Never downshift without the clutch. That could cause problems 👍
@@PeteHager I have a raptor 350 and idk if I'll be able to sit down and pull it up I usually do the foot in the grab bar method
Where did you buy those A-arm skid plates?
I have them linked in the description in my parts list. They're GYTR skids so you can order them at any yamaha dealer
Great videos, I really enjoy watching them! What bar bend are those pro tapers?
Thanks, keep up the great work!
Tom
Sorry for my late response. They're the Pro Taper contour in the "ATV Mid" bend. I'm about 5'10 and I thought they seemed kind of low at first but I've happily gotten used to them. If your taller then me I would recommended the "ATV High" or "Raptor Bend". You also need oversized clamps for the oversized bars. I have everything linked down below. Just make sure you source the appropriate bar height 👍
@@PeteHager
Hi Pete, thanks for getting back to me! I will be getting a 2020 raptor once our travel restrictions are lifted. I'm 5'9" so I think they will work great. Keep the great videos coming! Thank you for your time and sharing your information. Be safe and have fun!
Thanks again!
Tom Jarels
If I can’t wheelie it I don’t want to ride it
Love the handlebars ,where did you put the ignition cylinder?.Want to put them on my raptor.
Thanks! If you look at the first person shots near the end you’ll see it’s relocated on the front left fender in the top right corner of the bigger warning plate👍
THIS HELPED A LOT. I HAVE A TON OF FLAT LAND AND IM GONNA PRACTICE. THANS
