    I don’t have to worry about that with my 100mm suntour coil fork

    • @DailyMTBRider
      @DailyMTBRider  5 лет назад +20

      But you can still adjust your preload (it kind of acts like air pressure!)

    • @erenerdem2828
      @erenerdem2828 5 лет назад +6

      Yeah but you can increase its travel by 20mm by removing the bottom out stopper and the rubber stick inside the coil. Also I service mine regularly just to keep it smooth. They come with zero grease and thats why they feel like shit. I recommend you to do a lower leg service and throw a couple of foam rings. Also use a oil than the grease. It makes a huge difference.

    Servicing is key, people just don't do it.
    That said it's lot more than just "a couple of bucks" here in the UK for my Fox 34s it's £100-120 upwards (that's $130-150 USD or $170-200 CAD), that's with the forks off the bike too, not even left on.

      @@DailyMTBRider I know, Josh. But still if you see 8 videos on a day from your favourite mtb youtubers and all get sponsored from a company you're not really interested in (also due to the high chance that they probably dont ship to switzerland anyway), it can get annoying. Similar to beer ads from the worlds worst beer before football/soccer matches or ensurance/finance companies before icehockey playoff matches. If their ads would be spread over 2-3 months on all those channels its different.

    I thought this video was highly informative and I enjoy watching your content! Nice job. That’s where the positivity ends though. As much as a fork cost, most people can’t afford service every 20 rides. We are not all sponsored by Dollar Shave or have buddies like Mike at Lost Co. Clearly I’m not blaming you for having sponsorships as you deserve it with all the hard work you put into your videos. I just want to stand up for the guys and girls who spent all their own money to buy nice bikes and the bike shops kill you on service fees. Thanks for the tips though. Most of them are free and certainly is helpful.

    Nice video but a bit pointless, it's obvius that keeping your shocks clean and serviced would make them feel better and last longer. more than that, rebound, compression and other adjustments do exacly what they say and it's obvius that until some point the more time you put adjusting them the better the shock could feel.
    Anyhow, really nice video I can tell you put a lot of toughts and time in it.
    In my opinion you should recreate the idea with products which help you maintain your shocks.

I have the Diamond Back Octane 24”. It’s supposed to have 50 millimeters but in my experience it only has 1 or 2 lol. I’m not sure if this is because I’m not using enough pressure or if the bike was installed incorrectly. But, I’ll watch the video to find out!

    • @jakebrennand9743
      @jakebrennand9743 5 лет назад +1

      Hey there, Jake here. I specialize in Rockshox forks at my shop in Toronto. The official answer is "yes, but it's not needed." RS's formal position is that a lowers service at the correct factory intervals - 50 and then 200 hours and so on (Fox is a bit different) - is enough to return the stanchions to essential lubrication levels, especially if the service is performed (as it always should be) with SRAM Butter, the proper and best-quality seal grease. They say that beyond that anything extra will just attract gunk and be a problem waiting to happen. However, this is one area where you can ignore the official recommendation! WPL or Whistler Performance Lubricants - what is used in the video - is a phenomenal product developed in Whistler by proper DH and enduro folks. It's eco-friendly and ideal for both Rockshox and Fox suspension, as well as dropper posts. Just make sure you apply it with your (clean) fingers near the seals, cycle the fork numerous times, and wipe off the excess after. The fork should be cleaned PRIOR to application, too, using isopropyl alchohol and water mixed together. The essential point overall is to get lubrication UNDER the wiper seals rather than it pooling on the surface and/or in leftover trail grit. So the best answer is yes, use WPL. Mike at The Lost Co. is a terrific suspension mechanic and was smart to get his clients comfortable using it. If interested, follow my new channel at Jake Brennand/Hogtown Spokes for some really detailed tech videos. Another strong video here by Daily MTB :)

    Don't even know what a good/bad suspension feels like cause I'm too scared to mess with it and haven't ridden more than 1 full suspension bike.

      Then go to your local bike shop, they will help you with everything and feel free to ask them why it feels like that when you're unsure

    What if I have an MRP ramp control cartridge?

    • @jakebrennand9743

      The RCC is really low maintenance. During a proper fork service - provided it hasn't been damaged - all it needs to keep humming is removal, thread cleaning with isopropyl-water, and re-application of an appropriate O-ring grease like Slick Honey (the factory-supplied RCC grease). I also always check torque for my customers. On enduro forks like Josh's (or with Rockshox anything Pike or Lyrik), the capsule needs to be re-tightened to nearly 30 Nm (check your exact fork vis-a-vis MRP) with a cassette-lockring tool. On the 32 mm more XC-focused forks, the torque spec is roughly half that. But that's it - simple cleaning and torque management.

    What if I have coil suspension? Please help me with my deraluier, whenever I go through a rough section on my bike the deraluier snaps forward and makes a really loud noise or hits the rim when I case really hard, I have taken it to multiple bikes shops and they tell me that it’s normal, it’s not a cheap bike either! It cost almost R7000! Please could you advise me on what to to, would be greatly appreciated🤘🏻

      The broke Mtb rider what kind of derailleur do you have?

    • @jakebrennand9743
      @jakebrennand9743 5 лет назад

      The issue is likely that you either have no clutch - known as the "Shadow Plus" series mechanism if you run a Shimano derailleur - or loose clutch tension on your derailleur if it is Shadown Plus equipped. Your derailleur will have a grey ON/OFF switch on the side beside the upper pulley wheel if it contains a Shimano locking-clutch. It must be switched ON for all riding! Note that Shadow Plus didn't debut until 10 speed (roughly 2011), so counting the number of cassette (rear) cogs will also help you in determining whether you have a clutch system or not. If you run SRAM, the higher-end derailleurs have a slightly less tactile but equally serviceable and effective clutch system in place. On the other end, if you don't run a clutch currently it's frankly the only way to prevent chain and derailleur-cage slap during hard trail riding. In that case I would highly recommend buying a new clutch-equipped derailleur (and the appropriate-speed new cassette and chain and potentially chainring to go with it and sync up the whole drivetrain). Regarding coil suspension, the service intervals are very similar and high-end coil suspensions are often just as, or close to as, adjustable damper wise. The chief difference is that you will likely need more compression preload for high-speed hit resistance, as coil-sprung forks are more "linear" (softer) by nature. Hope that helps :)

    First thing I do with the compression settings is set LSR using the kerb method. This gets is within 1-2 clicks of what you ride on the trail. Then I go from there. If air pressure or coil weight is adjusted I redo the kerb test. If you set the fork and shock up to what you ride 75% of the time you can then adjust the spring curve for that last 25%. The best thing you can do for an air fork is fit a secondary air chamber like my manitou IRT or a DSD runt for fox/RS. Makes the air spring much more tuneable and removed that nasty ramp up feeling you get from tokens. A lot of people tend not to consider changing the air pressure in the fork or shock. I know my air pressure but not my sag.

    Josh. I see you added that SC chainstay protector. Was it a direct fit on your bike or did you have to modify it any? I’m wanting to add it to a Honzo but not sure if it will be too big or not
