When I studied English at University, I chose that poem for one of my speech lessons. The teacher ask us to get as close to the original as possible. So I found a recording of Tolkien himself reciting this poem, and I listened to it and repeated it till I got as close to Tolkien as I could. My teacher was delighted that I put in the extra effort, as my English is American English, so I could have easily said the poem that way. But I wanted to get close to the original, and I did!

another great video! i was a massive tolkien / middle earth fan as a young person, and certainly the peter jackson films renewed my love for the lore. at present, i've found myself discovering so many wonderful YT channels creating original content covering all things JRR and middle earth. so thankful to have found you and several other quality channels.
    take care!

The poem is now a song done by Calmatva de Profundus so I cut the video before that, I have heard it many times.

I'm sure it's been requested before, but a series of dramatic readings of the Silmilarion (with some relevant notes added perhaps) would be awesome in your voice.

30 mentions of Durin, divided by 7 Durins is only a bit more than four mentions per Durin. Not bad.

This is Tolkien's universe were Illuvitar's magic and powers are realistic and logical so yes, I believe in the reincarnations of Durin. Long live the king.

It is an interesting question, was Durin the deathless reincarnated six times. It might very well be possible, according to the story when the god that created the dwarves was discovered to have created without the consent of Eru'iluvitar (I believe was his name) his punishment was to have his creation wait until after the Elves had awoke.
So it might be as an additional punishment the gods reincarnated Durin the Deathless when needed not only as a source of good but also as a form of continued punishment on the one who created him.

Eru didn't punish Aule, he rewarded the Valar for his devotion (for being willing to destroy his creation when his work was discovered) by granting the dwarves the secret fire and making them... I guess "real" might be the best word? So I don't think he would ascribe a punishment to them after the fact.

    • @deadmonk6671
      @deadmonk6671 2 года назад

@@BlizzardofOze Ah but there is the question though was it a punishment within a reward.
To my knowledge the Dwarves were not meant to be originally created, Aule did it himself but couldn't give them life. So yes you can say he was rewarded for his devotion leading him to wilfully destroy them and Eru with giving the dwarves life. But the punishment was the knowledge that Aule would observe the dwarves dwell and thrive upon the world whilst having to "Live" with the fact that he very nearly destroyed his creation. A punishment within a reward

Being that Khazad-dum should be at the very peak of its existence, it would be a nice touch if the RoP show at least showed us the mausoleum of Durin the Deathless. It should be there as a holy site for the dwarves I imagine. A small victory if so. Regarding the line of Durins, I do believe they are actual reincarnations in spirit at least if not in memory. Being that they were created by Aule, I think the dwarves might have some special circumstance that doesn't apply to the other races.

What the hell is the specific timeline for these or the closest we can get, I get so confused when Durin I dies in the first age but by the time we get to Durin III we are already 1600 year into the second age. I think the answer is that there were many other generations between the durins, but his makes me even more confused how Durin III and Durin IV are both in the Ring's of Power. Everyone acts like the issue is that the Durin's are suppose to be literal reincarnations (although thats not 100%) but the real issue is that they must have compressed like 500 years.

  • @TarMody

The reincarnation of Durin is a belief among dwarves. According to this belief, if a dwarf born in the dynasty is judged to have the character and personality of Durin the Immortal, he is given the name Durin. As long as a dwarf named Durin is alive, no dwarf with the same character and personality will be born. Therefore, dwarves with the name Durin cannot live in the same period and are not first-degree relatives of each other. And again, dwarves with the name Durin must have ancestry.

could it of been durin reincarnated, sure. we are told that this happens from time to time (gandalf being a fine example), though it is doubtful that the gods who obviously favored the elves at all times would do so for the dwarves.
calling the long beards the "most famous dwarves" is kind of a misnomer. it is like going to one country in the past and asking who the most famous ruler is, 99% chance they will say their own just because its the one they all know.

I would assume the line of Durin to be superior on average. Something akin to the Dunedin as to a human.
Reincarnation kinda takes away from the champions of the line.
I believe they made their Mark's by their own power. 🍻
