    As I've said before, I am a lifetime prepper from a long line of preppers. It has saved my bacon many times over the years. No one knows what the future holds and we can't prep for every or all situations. All we can do is the best we can each day, one step at a time. I really appreciate your videos as I always learn something I didn't know or had forgotten about. Today was no exception. Thank you again for your well thought out and concise information. See you next time.

    Oh boy JR you are right on with this video as always. My son and daughter in law are first time home owners for a littler over a year now. They have 4 beautiful little girls, my granddaughters. When they bought the house I mentioned they needed to do something about the well pump in the unheated garage that might freeze and the huge trees with dead limbs very close to the house. Both fell on deaf ears. Well needless to say my son spent 2 days last winter unthawing his well pump and replacing broken pipes. Then this spring during a bad storm a huge limb fell on their roof and he had to replace their whole roof. I refrained from saying "I told you so". I figured he didn't need to hear it. Ohio weather is not to be ignored. I guess he will learn the hard way.

Interesting that you are in the Piney Woods of East Texas - my family has been there for several generations (Longview, Gilmer, Tyler and all over north east area). I now live at 1.5 miles elevation in SW Colorado - already had over a foot of snow this year and a blizzard this morning. We've lived here for 15 years and I affirm your suggestions for winter. Sometimes its a matter of comfort and sometimes life & death! Thanks for your vids!!!

    Here in Canada we have garden hose faucets that have a shut-off valve inside the house. That way we can shut off the water to the outside pipe and then just open the outside pipe so it doesn't freeze.

    I have been a very avid woodsman, Hunter, and camper my whole life. And since I have a fairly severe case of OCD I was fairly prepared. But I have recently started becoming an actual prepper. We have been very fortunate to afford whole home solar panels and a tesla battery back up. If any major wind or rain storm (I live in Souther CA, not much snow here) is registered on any major weather station/website/app, the tesla battery automatically switches to standby and fully charges itself and waits until after the storm passes before to goes back to it's custom set up. If we lose power it steps in and sends us an alert to make sure we switch down to the bare minimum power use so our fridge and freezer get the majority of the power. We've done some dumby scenarios and allowed ourselves some lights and TV and it lasted 19 hours before it alerted us that the battery was getting low.

A digital battery tester comes in at $40 ISH again a handy check before winter

      I have a 12 volt fridge I keep in my truck with bottled water that I use daily. In the winter the insulation helps to keep the water from freezing. If it gets really cold like in the teens for a couple of days, the bottles will eventually freeze. But more often than not I have never really had an issue.
      It's not perfect but it works fairly well for me. You could try something similar.
      Hope that helps!

    • @yellowdog762jb
      @yellowdog762jb 5 месяцев назад +5

      Often a large adjustable wrench will do it. Pop the cover off of your meter and check now, while you can see it. You can tie a red ribbon on the wrench that you have checked and know to work. That way if you need it in a hurry in the middle of the night and the power is out, you can find it easily with almost any flashlight. There's a valve at the street, or wherever water comes in. And one inside your home, often in the garage, or on an exterior wall, usually by one of your spigots. This valve usually looks like the handle on your outside water spigot, or its a single lever. It's good to know where both are.
      It wouldn't hurt to make a 3 ring binder with photos for others in the house to refer to. You could also make them a cheat sheet on where things like propane and white gas and lanterns are, and how to use them. Don't rely too much on videos. They may not be able to find them on line or on their device in a pinch.
      The adjustable wrench will also work on the gas meter. At least it does on mine.

    For younger generations who have never known a world without cell phones and the internet, I recommend having a grid down way to charge your smart phone. I have the smallest Jackery power bank and a portable solar panel for it so I can always recharge my smaller devices. Prolonged power grid failures can become painfully boring for teens and others who may be too dependent upon electronic entertainment and text messaging.
    I also recommend having some non-electronic ways for household members to entertain themselves. Such as age-appropriate coloring books, puzzle books, novels, jigsaw puzzles and various hobby kits. Board games, card games, song books and musical instruments can also provide good ways to pass the time and entertain the household. A portable DVD player and a set of children's cartoon videos and Disney movies on DVDs can keep the little ones entertained so parents can get some survival tasks done.

    People used to laugh at me with my "stupid, useless, tiny" 800w almost silent gasoline fuelled generator (there's moped scooters in my neighbourhood are way louder) power failed for about 18 hours and I used my generator to recharge my freezer and a couple solar power stations belonging to neighbours and myself, a couple hours a day for recharge of stuff is enough if being frugal kinda like charging ya cellphone and a backup cellphone powerbank in ya car while driving to work 😁
