      Integza, my sibling in Tesla, don't mess with homemade pressure vessels. Use an old LP gas tank or something similar that is designed to handle the pressure.

      You said that you wanted more mass on the turbine wheel so that it has more ”hmph”, but the thing is, inertia does not increase torque or power. It only smooths it out. This is a very common misconception regarding flywheel physics. Very cool video though!

    *I propose to make an electric turbojet engine. The point is this: we place a spiral, for example, made of nichrome, into the combustion chamber. We apply voltage to it so that it becomes hot, the air heats up and expands, just like in a conventional turbojet engine. According to approximate theoretical calculations, in the engines of passenger aircraft the ratio of the mass of air to the mass of kerosene ejected to create a jet stream is 50 to 1, i.e. in theory we will lose no more than 2% of thrust for the same energy consumption*

      It will be a fun experiement. Of course the harder part is generating the electricity as efficiently or carrying it with heavy batteries. This was sort of how the US made their nuclear powered jet engines. I doubt that carrying an engine to make electricity is as efficient as just using an engine.

      I've thought extensively about this and I think the only practical way to generate enough thermal energy without blowing out your heating element is instead to use an arc, similar to an arc furnace. The amount of thermal energy contained in kerosene is really hard to replicate with electricity at a practical level.

    Precious advice : never stay in the plan of rotation of something that's heavy and spinning fast. In aeronautics, we learn quickly to avoid staying next to propellers and turbines (see those red lines on the sides of the fuselages, right next to the turbines or propellers ? It's here to tell you that if it breaks, the spinning compressor discs will cut everything at this place) ^^

      tbh I see a lot of people scared of this, but I wouldn't be worried, if its gonna blow up, it will be around the braze, and simply split in half, the bottom just hitting the skateboard and the top harmlessly going upwards, the fact it's brazed together is a (very crude) failsafe that should make it (mostly) safe

    Holy crap. I was going to say to never stand in line with a turbine at spin up because that is usually when they have a catastrophic failure but that is not as bad as pressurizing an untested homemade pressure vessel. I am glad nothing went wrong but how have you lasted this long doing crazy stuff like that?

      My thoughts too, absolute madness. The pressure vessel was filled with liquid nitrogen which would be like instant frostbite on anything it splashes.

    Out of every video you've made this might be the one I'm most impressed you survived. Like holy shit, heating a homemade cryogenic pressure vessel without even having a relief valve seems absolutely insane. It's like the definition of a pipe bomb.
    Standing in the line of fire for such a massive turbine and such high rpm doesn't seem particularly safe either.
    With that said it was a very entertaining video if terrifying, just please give some more thought to safety before you can't.

      Having a face in line with 1 kilo of steel flywheel rotated to 6000 rpm on a plastic axis doesn't look safe either. Mechanical power enough to push your entire body. In front of your face.

    The perfect balance between backyard fun and chemical pipe bombs.
    Idea for the next video>
    Make a nitric acid + aniline powered rocket engine that was used on old jets and missiles from the 1940s. To expand on this, the main tube of the engine would be from PTFE(Teflon) or glass tube(prehaps quartz), fittings will be CNCed from 302 or 304 Stainless steel alloy because of nonreactivity with the two liquids, tubing would be also from PTFE and it would work with two
    syringes. You would use the RPA program to make the ideal nozzle and strap it to a skateboard. Then, you would test it and see the effectivity of the almost explosive and potencially unstable liquid propellant mixture from the 1930s.
    As i said, the perfect balance between backyard fun and chemical pipe bombs.

      @@user-mw3ht5kp2p How would you rate that valve, without knowing the actual strength of the pressure vessel? It's complete bonkers, you don't fill liquid nitrogen into closed containers. It's even something they tell you at the places where you can get it - have the cap of any container only loosely sit on top, never screw it down.

    What an awesome idea! I'm impressed by how well that turbine worked.
    One thing that was probably clearer during editing is that the turbine wasn't balanced well when it was mounted on the skateboard. I don't know how much that affected the performance, but it seemed to be experiencing quite a bit of friction. Also, if the shaft for the gear train was supported from both sides, that should help avoid the need for such high tension of the belt and reduce friction.

    Holy crap you scared the crap out of a few of us when you tried to use that tin can pipe bomb. I thought that was the end of your channel and there would be a "in memorium" at the end of the video. I suggest you get your hands on the same size cylinder from your local supplier in aluminum with liquid Co2 with the valve for gas withdrawl. it's filled with liquid Co2 but you will get about 200 - 300 psi statically out of it and it will be lighter than the cylinder you used in the video.
    Keep up the experimenting and not blowing yourself up.

      The CO2 tanks we used in paintball (readily available off-the-shelf and pre-filled) are closer to 800 - 900 psi. My own air cylinder is a 5000 psi model for compressed air only. I know Tippmann was experimenting with Propane because the tank pressure is a lot lower but displaces about the same amount of air as a similar-sized CO2 tank. The idea was scrapped because it turned out that Propane was, get this, flammable. No kidding! But if you leveraged the flammable property, I bet you could achieve a higher output velocity for the same volume of air!
      But, yeah. That first can-tank scared the crap outa me, too!

    You absolutely NEED an automatic overpressure valve, that releaves the pressure non-catastrophically before the weld or cups do, that self-made pressure vessel was basically a bomb!
    I am impressed you didn't get blown to mush by that thing, but please make things a bit more secure from now on, that was scary!

      But never in any of the videos I saw of him did he do anything as terrifying as this, which made me really afraid he'd die, even though I'd then not be able to see this video, so the video's existence already shows that he survived it.

      Not just a bomb, a shrapnel grenade. The worst kind of grenade. The blast wouldn't kill him, but the shrapnel at worst could, or it could take out an eye and a few fingers/toes. Not a fun thing.

      So scary, this reminds me of when I put liquid nitrogen in my mouth, you can blow it out in a puff of smoke which I thought was cool. (not now!) However one time I had too much in the cup and it slid into my stomach. You can't feel it because it's floating on a layer of gas on your tongue. (Liedenfrost effect) Then I felt my stomach start to expand and I couldn't burp. So stupid!!!! Stupidest thing I've ever done. Finally I was able to burp, but for a few seconds it was scary!!! Don't drink liquid nitrogen! Ever. I could have won a good medal in the darwin awards. By the way you can buy burst disks that have different pressure ratings and have NPT threads. Google burst disk or rupture disk.

      See I tend to think of engineering and science education as the tools you acquire to not kill, maim, or destroy property while on the pursuit of the end goals you have in your career. You learn chemistry so you can understand how to think about chemistry and know when you need to delve into the risks of working with the materials or process. And the same applies for all things electrical and mechanical as well.
      There’s few things that can’t possibly be done safely with enough effort. In my experience, most of the time people not being willing to slow down and solve the safety issues is what causes tragedies more than anything.

      @lukegilles I couldn't agree more. I have worked several investigations where fatalities were the result of not slowing down and re-analyze the dangerous involved. This guy is extremely smart, and I have no doubt he looked back on this and was disappointed he failed to catch the danger. We all do this from time to time, especially in a hurry, and that's why " hazard analyzes " is the key to a long and happy life. 😊

    Making a pressure vessel from two camping mugs and assorted firrints just fills me with the heebie-jeebies. Pressure vessles are nothing to mess with. The sooner you stop screwing around with stuff like that the better. Nitrogen-powered pipe bombs are no joke.

    I think it would be amazing if you converted a go cart from using a ICE engine to using some nitrogen gas powered turbines. With the go cart, you already have a frame and steering setup, imagine a few more of those SLM turbines, the throttle controls the kPa aimed at the turbines

    Not gonna lie, was a bit nervous about the nitrobomb you created at first. Glad you chose another solution. My suggestion for next project is to go bigger. Since the company has your turbine design, get another one made and double up. Double up the turbines to make a bicycle drive with double gears, double air lines and use the same nitrogen tank with more bar to allow for the double turbines.

      No point in safety valve if you don't even know how your home built pressure vessel is rated. You can do some educated guesses, but that's not even close to being safe, even with a valve.

      And btw safety valves can be dangerous too, when they suddenly release. I had an additional air tank to supplement my compressor. It had a safety valve at around 10 bar. When it suddenly released, not only was it super loud and could have easily damaged hearing or injured someone close to it, but the sudden shock literally popped the paint off of the vessel.

    To prevent the steel container from bursting add a pressure relief valve, many of them are adjustable. However, the higher the pressure required the more expensive they tend to be.

    If you redesigned the nozzle to blow on to the bottom of the disk, you would also get added thrust from the air. Plus, you could move the bottle toward the front of the skateboard for better weight distribution.

      The pressure vessel was mild though. 8 bar at that small of a volume would probably give you a good scare and ring your ears but you'd be fine

    I think that with a little bit of optimisation you can go much faster!
    - balance the wheel of the turbine
    -give it an enclosure (a stator basically) that can also support it laterally (it shakes a lot when you blow the compressed nitrogen)
    - keep the nitrogen tank horizontal to get a lower center of mass
    - wear a helmet so you would feel confident go faster!
    We can get to see some nice speed records with this thing a think!! I love you contents every time!

      @@AndrejMejac yep, that’s a good idea! Probably adding another one on the other side of the turbine would solve the shaking problem since the force would be symmetrical. I did not understand if the turbine is symmetrical, but if it isn’t you can probably mirror it and stuck the two together

      The bearings he is using are greased, these are robbing a lot of power as there is not a lot of torque and high rpm. This application calls for oil, you should get a bunch of extra oomph just from that. But then you have to deal with oil, oil pump, etc, so maybe not worth it.

      @@pierregarbo8628Symmetry is a good point. Perhaps there is an optimal number of nozzles, depending of in-flow, nozzle size, outflow, mass distribution and such. Enclosure could lower loss, i guess, at least at one side.
      Nice explosion is probably a bonus.

    You missed the oscillating hook machine that’s fairly common and I would have loved to see more on embroidery machines but that may have been redundant. I repair and operate sewing/embroidery machines for a living so this was pretty cool to see. Really solid explanations and totally spot on. Great job!

    All these 3d printer yt guys will do absolutely anything but machining…
    Tools complement eachother not replace!
    Almost all of your failure points in most of your videos could easily be solved with a little machining and making your own metal parts.

      machining requires a ton of initial cost in buying machines, crazy time in setup, and probably another cost of mcuh more space. All that for some parts to not be machinable and leaving most of your machines unused for a while and the initial cost not being paid back just makes metal machining unrealistic.
      the parts he needs to be metal are metal, like that turbine and the aerospike he made a while back, which he can solve easily through a machining service like he used in this video, or the (unconventional) metal infused resin like he did in the aerospike.
      most of the stuff in rocketry and engines anyway are super complex to machine
      machining initial cost not worth it, can be substituted with services, and even with machining will likely not solve many of his problems

      @@brandonzhang760A basic, compact manual desktop lathe could do most of the basic things that are imho problematic in a lot of Integza's builds (like the hub/bearing adapter for the turbine in this video. So much wobble would be avoided) and really doesn't cost that much. We're not talking about doing complex 5d aerospace parts, just basic axles, bushings, adapters, nozzles, that sort of thing. The sort of parts that benefits from being accurately round and concentric. One step beyond the lathe is a simple manual desktop mill (doesn't even have to be CNC). Again not a MASSIVE investment (probably similar in cost to a high spec 3d printer like a Bambulab P1) but gives a lot of capability.

      @@TheAverageDutchman The big problem with these kinds of mini-mills and mini-lathes is their unyielding rigidity of a cooked noodle. Cutting steel on them requires babying to such an extent you can't even use carbide inserts, they wouldn't be in their optimal load/RPM ranges. You'd really want a more rigid machine for working anything but brass and aluminium. And that comes with hella price and space. A reasonably cheap desktop CNC mill that *can* cut steel, I.E. Carvera, runs the cost of 3-5 high end printers.

    I've seen a lot of people on youtube electroplate 3d printed parts. I've also seen them electroplate most of the 3d printed part and then remove the plastic and fill it with a metal like tin. I was thinking some sort of project that involved this would be really interesting, espcially since I haven't seen anyone compare the strength of these parts and the thermal capabilities. So an idea that would use these parts could be a mini MPD thruster project involves creating a small-scale, functioning model of a type of electric propulsion used in space. The thruster works by accelerating ionized gas using electromagnetic fields to produce thrust. In this DIY version, key parts are 3D-printed and then electroplated with metals to handle the extreme conditions and high currents involved. It’s a project that combines aerospace engineering, physics, and advanced manufacturing techniques to demonstrate a complex technology in a more accessible format.

      Its an interessting technique for sure, only problem with plating is that you lose dimensions. If you need an exact diameter or fitting threats in a hard to reach area its a pain in the ass to get right. But all in all its for sure interessting to do/see.

      My concern was less the flywheel, and moreso there not being a bearing on both sides.
      Granted flywheel explosions are a valid concerns, doing that math and if need be making a container for it (although this only does so much, some FES systems are put in the ground for this reason if i remember correctly)

    If you loosen up the trucks on your skateboard, you should be able to turn by leaning. It might be a little bit harder since you're sitting at the back and it's more useful to turn the front trucks by leaning but it still should work.

    A clutch might help a lot. Get the disc spinning like a flywheel before it engages so you can gear up for higher speed.

      Tesla turbines are failure..ive tried 3 designs and it is super weak and steam thirsty...this turbine he uses is called De Laval turbine and its probably best turbine anyone could invented

    You can solve the issue with steering the skateboard if you have your weight towards the front of the board. Having weight on the rear caster creates a stronger positive feedback loop that skateboarders unafectionately call "wobbles". Downhill skateboarders also mitigate this with lower degree truck angles in the back of the board which means you get less turn for how much the skateboard truck leans.

    The way the gas nozzle is angled is giving at maximum torque yes but once you get up to speed you should tilt it and aim it at 90° into the turbine to get more RPM

    After you figure out how to install a pressure relief valve, mount the nozzle near your turbine and get a longer hose with a trigger that you can hold in your hand. Then you can put the tank in a backpack and ride your superpowered skateboard like normal.
