  • In this video, coach Matt gives 5 simple drills that you can do on or off the ice to improve the quickness and explosiveness of your snapshot.
    TIPS FROM COACH MATT:
    1. Keep your top hand away from your body.
    2. Position the puck in line with your toes/skates.
    3. Let your stick do the work for you. Flex your stick with your bottom hand.
    4. Keep your follow-through short. Think "twitch" with your bottom hand.
    5. Keep your eyes on the target & feel the puck with your hands.
When shooting, players need to practice accuracy, quickness, power and deceptiveness. Accuracy is the most important of them all. Eyes on target + short follow through.

The absolute biggest "a-ha!" moment for my shooting came when another youtube video put the lesson focus on the mechanics of the upper hand. When he described the motion as being similar to "whipping a wet towel", it was that moment I finally understood how to recreate these player's motions and realized where all the power and stick flex is coming from. Its really not coming from just the lower hand, the flex starts as the upper hand moves away from the body, then the whip changes the top of the stick's direction, which starts the flex, the bottom hand continues pushing while the upper hand continues pulling, and the flex is present until the blade catches up and launches the puck. At the same time the whip is introduced, the blade will automatically close, then open, then close again through the swing. Your video demonstrates all of these mechanics beautifully at 2:04. And sure enough, even though I have a horrible shot, older videos I took of myself shooting show me whipping my upper hand, long before I learned how to focus on the technique. At the end of the day, this is a great video with great tips.

Great tips. Going to be hard to get a chair at a public skating session and casually snap shots into the goal.
Still, you would like OG af doing it.

Lol, yes, it would be very OG of you to pull a chair out during public skate to rip a couple snappers 😂

Hi Coach, why would you want to limit your follow through?
