I always play better on these classic Slingerland drums because of that huge open sound that fits my style of playing so well. Not to many drummers play a buzz roll which sounds so cool to me. To do it so even takes some time to learn. Thanks for your comment.

When I get to do these concerts with my own Big Band, it`s always a joy for me to perform with my outstanding musicians. When it`s my turn to do a solo, I want it to be dynamic and exciting for the people who come to my concerts. The only way I know how to play is to give 100% in every performance that I do. As a drummer Jazz Big Band leader, I learned how to arrange and put all the music we do together. I must be able to tell my musicians how I want the chart to be played. When it`s my turn to do a solo, I just compose it in my mind and want it to be dynamic and exciting with feel. The people in my concert in real time will let me know how I`m doing in my performance. Thanks for posting. I swear the apex of drum sound quality out of the box was when the consumer market didn't always rely on mics and technology to create a great sounding set of drums. And this old Slingerland proves that point to the Nth degree.
I want to hear the real sound of the drums, and not all the technology needed to get any sound out of the drums. When I sit in on other drummers drums today, the sound is so muffled up with that dead bass drum. It`s just so hard for me to play on those drums. Now I know why those drummers hit their drums so hard, so they can get some sound out of the drums. I`m just an old school drummer who likes his drums to sing. Thanks for your comment.
When I exited High School band I couldn’t believe how live performance for “rock bands” was pulled off. I always thought “well why don’t we all listen to each other so we know what we’re playing and when to be loud/soft” No, apparently they all need mics and mixers. Understandable if you’re Rush or Kiss touring stadiums, but I digress

What I love most about this open tuning is that I can get so many different sounds out of one drum. A muffled or dead drum you can`t do this. Not to many drummers want to do all the hard work of having a swinging Big Band. It`s rare for poeple to hear a Big Band live anymore. That is why I post my concerts on my channel. So good to hear from someone who likes to hear the real sound of the drums without out all the muffling. Every drum set I sit in on has the deadest drums I have ever played. No wonder why these drummers hit their drums so hard so they can get some sound out of them. I want my drums to ring out with a note to them. Not a thud sound. Do you see bass players put tape on the strings to get a dead sound. Of course not, they want the strings to ring out for a pure note sound. Well of course I am not even close to what BR played. It was because of Buddy I wanted to have my own Big Band to play this great music for the people who come to my concerts. Like Buddy, I want my solo to be dynamic and exciting, and then add my idea`s on what to play. Thanks for your comment.

@@125sloth Since I got to see and hear BR well over a 100 times, no way am I better than he was. He has been gone now for over 30 years, so I want to make sure that style of drumming is still with us. I got to know Buddy and he was always so kind to me. He even gave me a drum lesson and let me play on his Slingerland drums. One time I told Buddy I wanted to have my own Big Band like his because I love the music he played so much. He said, "Ken don`t ever let anyone tell you can`t have your own Big Band to play the music you love. Just work hard young man and do it". Just the kind of statement Buddy would say, direct and to the point. Well I did work hard and as you can see and hear, I do have my own Big Band. Hang on to those classic Slingerlands. They have a one of a kind sound to them. As you can see and hear, I`m using my 1971 Slingerland drums with my Big Band all the time!
Much more snap, resonance and life in a wide open tuned drum set. As a rock guy myself, that is how I like to hear the drums. Ginger Baker did it. John Bonham did it. And even Bill Ward did it. I don’t care for a completely dead sounding kit. Some muffling is okay depending on the music style for a different attack. But to me, deadening the drums too much sounds too “small”.
You are so correct. A wide open full tone out of the drums makes them sing. Most important for me is that I can get so many different sounds out of the drum with this tuning. Thanks so much for your comment.
Today's sound the drums proyect like cardboard boxes. The art of getting a muffled sound just adding more pressure from your figura & wrists is getting lost for ever. DWs and the recording industrie have changed the way drums sound today.
I bought this Slingerland BR 80N drum set way back in 1971. No way did I ever think I would use it with my own Ken Loomer Big Band doing concerts. I took super care of these drums for sure. So the drums ar over 50 years old and still the best sounding drums I have ever played on. Thanks for your comment James.

Funny you said from another galaxy. I`m big into astronomy and had my telescope out last night looking at some galaxies. One was M82 in Ursa Major which is part of the Big Dipper. Maybe I`m from M82! Thanks for your comment.
Was no music @ my elementary school 30 miles from town, so I made drums out of quaker oat tubes, with plastic coffee can lids for heads, & used chopstix, which are better for small-child hands, til big enough for full-aize sticks. By age 10, I had driven my family sufficiently nuts that they took me into town for private lessons, & I learned to read music. Took 2 years of piano-theory/composition while still playing drums in Symphonic band, Jazz big-band, & marching band, + several extra-curricular bands, thru college. I still play with @ least 2-3 bands a week, sometimes 5 in 1 week, today @ 68 years old.

I was inspired in 1961 or '62 when my dad, who was a part-time guitarist musician and playing many years since WWII at different events in the greater Indianapolis area, one night was watching TV and one of the local TV stations played "The Gene Krupa Story" starring Sal Mineo playing as Krupa. I was hooked immediately on wanting to play the drums. Within a couple of years I got the chance. Took lessons in the summer of 1963 while I was nearing my entry to 6th grade. That fall, my folks bought me my first and only drum: a Slingerland white pearl to play in the school band. Exciting, it was, and man did I practice on that thing a lot at home! Slingerland drums has always been my all-time favorite percussion brand...I would put Ludwig second and Gretch third cause I'm from the "old school" guys who remember many rock and jazz bands with those brands. This solo performance was excellent! I'm sure Krupa and Buddy Rich as well as Joe Morello would have loved it!
Just a wonderful story on how you as a young person got started and interested in playing the drums. I sure do remember that movie The Gene Krupa Story. These 1971 Slingerland drums I`m playing has that great big open full tone that I love. Same sound as the great Gene Krupa. My dream was to have my own Big Band like Gene and Buddy. Well with hard work and the will to do it, it has come true for me. To do a solo in front of my own Big Band and have people who come to my concerts and enjoy my band is why I`m a drummer. Let me highlight my "dream drum set" that I never got but, always had that in mine when listening to music - jazz, pop, and the rock stuff: The same stuff you have, a bit more or less...and yet, the High-Hat cymbals would be 16" thin styled, for that nice, crisp "chink sound" (as my assistant band director in high school, whi was a jazz drummer, Mr. Jim Lucas, said he liked and, had on the Gretch brand silver-sparkel four piece set back in the 1960's for our jazz band numbers) ... add in cymbals my choices: 18"... 20"... and, a 25". All these would be thin-crash and, Zildjian brand - the brand that, in my opinion is "the king of cymbals" in quality overall. Drumsticks: I guess that is an area one would have to try out to find the best sound and sturdiness (I guess like the very amazing looks and sound of the drum corps from Switzerland: "Top Secret") A good cowbell (and, I have an original real cowbell that my mom gave to me that was actually worn on a cow or two from the 1930s and '40s by a Georgia born and bred cow...and, it's loud!). Oh, don't forget the drum brushes. They are personal choice too. And...a super-sturdy chair to rattle those lovely Slingerland drums! Ken...if your band comes to Atlanta for a performance, I'd like to see it. Might even get one of our two drummers in our church to come along. Oh...you might be asking yourself..."What ever happened to that 1963 Slingerland white pearl snare drum?" Well...I'm somewhat ashamed to say that in the summer of 1971, I sold it to a 14 year old African-American boy who, with his father, came by at the house after seeing my ad to sell it in the Indianapolis Star/News newspaper ad. Sold it for, I think, $100. The boy got with it, a very good looking Ludwig snare/stand carry case and, my 14" Italian made cymbal and 1920s era stand. (Don't remember the brand of cymbal. Dad found it at one of his favorite music stores: Arthur's in Indy) Gosh! Wish I had kept the drum...though I hardly used it after graduation from high school (Lawrence Central High).

One of the rare times you will hear an open sounding bass drum. Most drummers today have the dead sounding bass drum. Nothing wrong with the dead sound if that is what you like as a drummer. Glad you like this open sounding bass drum. Being a drummer Big Band leader is just a joy for me to do since I get to work with so many outstanding musicians. Sure it takes hard work of putting all the music together, hiring the musicians, getting the jobs, promoting the band, and so much more, but I do it because I love the Big Band music so much. When I did recent big music festival, I had so many young people who came up to me after the concert saying they never heard a Big Band live before and now love the music I played. That made me feel great as a band leader. When was the last time you ever saw a jazz musician or jazz band on any of the Lat Night Talk Shows? It`s Never!! A lot of drummers don`t play a buzz roll. I try to make mine as smooth as possible. For some reason, it takes forever to upload a video to 1080. So I just use the lower one which to me looks good. Then again what do I know about computers and how to do all of this stuff. Thanks for your comment.

The Rich volume Big Swing Face with the kit tuned to Buddy’s liking was one we worked up in stage band. Actually got the Holman arrangement within few months of release - this version is just a super chart. The drummer on this simply superb. And got the melodic quotes goin’.
Wonderful you got to play in your stage band doing this excellent BR chart Big Swing Face which was arranged and composed by Bill Potts back in 1967. First you must have a love of what you do. I enjoy so much being a drummer Big Band leader and doing these concerts. I always give 100% to the music I play. I practiced long and hard to get the right drum technique needed to do the type of solo I wanted to do. Most important I wanted to do my best to support my fellow musicians with my drumming with feel for the music I play in my Big Band. The sound of the drums is important to me. @@KenLoomer Ken, I have commented on your drums and playing before and I can't agree more with your perspective on tuning. I have a 1961 Slingerland four-piece that I completely reconditioned, to include oiling the interiors and putting a layer of fiberglass on the exteriors of the toms and bass before covering them. With a set of coated+clear Ambassadors on the toms and the bass wide open, they sound like a pure piece of art and are capable of lasting for decades to come. Your set is the closest I've ever heard to mine. I salute you and everything you do to keep this music and these drums going.

@@scottm838 Of course thoses were studio recordings made back in 1969 when Ringo played the Ludwig Classic 3 toms drum set over 50 years ago now. His only drum solo on the song THE END on the ABBEY Road record is a classic sound. I love that record! Ringo at 82 is still playing and looking great. He is the one drummer I would love to meet of any drummer playing today. In this live recording of my Big Band, the Slingerland drums I have also is over 50 years old and is the best sounding drums I ever played. That big full open tone fits my style of playing so well. I now have a 24” bass drum,, No Muffling and in a relatively quiet room it’s the most gorgeous thing you will ever hear-- in louder spaces I’m sure some of the beauty is lost --
I learned so much more about bass drum control with this open sound tuning. I can play very soft with that bass drum and my foot can now do it with ease. If I want more volume, so easy to do since the bass drum can project the sound better than a muffled dead tuning. Thanks for your comment.

It`s a rare Slingerland BR model 4x14 inch snare drum with the chrome over brass straight edge hoops. With this wide open tuning it gives me a very crisp sound that projects so well. Doing buzz rolls on that sane drum just sounds so good. Thanks for your comment.
Since I`m a jazz drummer and play in my own Big Band and Jazz Quartet, many rock drummers would not like to do this jazz music. But if those rock drummers want to learn jazz drumming also, just watch the video`s and pick up a few drumming tips. Thanks for your comment.

Wonderful you got to own and play one of the best drum sets ever made in that Slingerland BR 80N model. Slingerland during this time in the 70`s put a blue tint on the Marine Peal so it would not yellow as much. I`m sure glad I took super care of my Slingerland drums. First thing I notice is how the drummer holds the stick in his/her left hand. Classical grip. Bravo! Slingerland kit is great also. Technique and dynamics noted.
I use the traditional grip for my left hand. I grip my left hand stick near the middle like what Buddy Rich, Joe Morello and Louie Bellson did. So much better for me to playing softly with this grip. These classic Slingerland drums with the big wide open clear tone works great for the type of drum technique that I have. Thanks for your comment.

I´m an amateur drummer myself and it would be a dream come true trying to play that kit! I have a Tama Superstar kit from 1983 which works very well in most circumstances but in a big band the Slingerlands outshines all drums by far in my opinion. @@KenLoomer

Since I`m using no mic`s on each drum going through a sound board, you are hearing real sound of these classic Slinger land drums. I`m playing that 4x14 Slingerland BR model which has the very crisp sound and projects so well. Dude...that was great!!! Life long drummer. I met and saw Louis Bellson do a clinic in Vegas when I was 9 and it changed my life. His solo was very similar to yours...but it was Bellson
Louie Bellson was one of the great drummers of all time. I got to know Louie and he was always so kind to me. I use to see Louie every year at Disney World in Florida. He even gave me a lesson and let me sit in with his small jazz band. One time he finally brought his Big Band to Disney World and he and the band were just amazing. I told him of a few charts he played that I would love to do with my Big Big. Like the amazing person he is, he asked for my address and gave them to me. Of course I have posted my Big Band doing those Louie Bellson charts on my channel. I love his brush work, so I got to do the chart he composed call Brush Tap. I got to meet both Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich. I think Buddy would be most happy that a drummer like me has a Big Band. I got to know Buddy and I told him I wanted to have a Big Band like his because I love the music so much. He said "Ken don`t ever let anyone tell you can`t have your own Big Band to play the music you love. Just work hard young man and do it". Best advise I ever got. The good news is that I did work hard and as you can see, my dream of having my own Big Band has come true. Buddy even gave me a drum lesson. I saw Buddy live so many times with his amazing Big Band. It was his Big Band music that impressed me the most. The way he played the drums to make the music feel so much better was just amazing. I learned from drummers like Buddy Rich, Joe Morello and Sonny Payne who used the press or buzz roll many times when playing a solo. The hard part is using dynamic`s, playing from very soft to loud in doing this press roll. One day I will have to make a video on my technique on how to do a very smooth press rolls. I was fortunate enough to have a best friend, whose dad was the late great famous Jazz drummer and percussionist for the Boston Pops / Symphony Orchestra, Fred Buda. His personal kit at home was a Premier four piece. 22"bass, 13"tom, 16"floor. REMO classic white coated heads. No muffling at all. All tuned high, with a ring tone as sweet as church bells. What a sound!!!🤘🏻🥁❤️

I bought a similar set of Marine Pearl Slingerland drums - same as above but with two mounted toms - in 1972. Like an idiot, I eventually played them with open bottoms and muted heads like most rock drummers of the day. Sold the set in 1980; one of the biggest mistakes I ever made in my life.
I also wished I did not sell some of my drums I use to own. Now that DW owns the Slingerland name, maybe they will bring back the way Slingerland made their drums.
It is so much better hearing it live. But I`m so glad I video so many of my Big Band concerts to promote this great music. So sad you don`t see bands like mine on TV anymore. When was the last time you ever saw a jazz musician on any of the late night talk shows. It never! Thanks for your comment.

Perfect balance between Quality musician and Quality Instrument right there. My opinion....Slingerland drums were made for, and ideal for that application right there. They are a wonderful Jazz set, and sound just like the kits the greats played in their day when Wonderful Bands played Wonderful music. I had the privilege to play on a couple Slingerland kits including a Buddy Rich set, and should have bought the Buddy Rich set when I had the chance a long time ago. Tremendous Sound. You really put on a clinic there Ken. Super rudimental and polished technique. One can tell you were influenced by the greats. I admire your dedication and ability to be able to play like that.
For me it was always about the music first. No way did I think that I would have my very own swinging Big Band when I bought these Slingerland drums. Early 70s Slingerlands really have that wonderful tone similar to Ludwigs of that period. For me the Slingerlands were the best of that era. Of course it helps to have a monster drummer play them!
My 71 classic Slingerland drums were just made so well. It had the 3 ply maple, poplar, maple with solid maple rings and clear lacquer shells that gave it that clear big open tone that I love so much. Thanks so much for your comment.

Kenny, You Killed it Man. Loved the sound of the Snare, especially. What barnd and type of Batter heads did you use?? The nice open Un Miked drum sounds was a welcomed Treat for me. I struggle playing at home to match my drum sounds to those on You Tube videos and recordings. I now realize how much the sounds are shaped by Miking and Equing the drums. This was Pure and Simple DRUMS.
Well a big part of the sound of the drums is the way a drum shell is made. Slingerland back in 71 used a 3 ply maple, poplar, maple with rock maple rings. This gives a warm sound to the drums. By using Remo Ambassador heads top and bottom, I able to get that big wide open full tone. Since I`m using no mic`s on the drums, you hear the real tone of each drum. Thanks for your comment.

It`s a drum sound you really don`t hear very much anymore. Every drum set I sit in on today has that same dead bass drum, all muffled tom sound with no tone. Like I said, it your drums, you tune them any way you like. Thanks for your comment.

The famous 1971 Slingerland BR 4x14 inch snare with the chrome over brass straight edge hoops. No mic`s on the snare and it just projects so well with that crisp clear sound. The buzz rolls I can do on that snare drum sounds as smooth as silk. Glad you notice my snare drum sound.

Thanks for posting. I swear the apex of drum sound quality out of the box was when the consumer market didn't always rely on mics and technology to create a great sounding set of drums. And this old Slingerland proves that point to the Nth degree.

When I exited High School band I couldn’t believe how live performance for “rock bands” was pulled off.

What I love most about this open tuning is that I can get so many different sounds out of one drum. A muffled or dead drum you can`t do this. Much more snap, resonance and life in a wide open tuned drum set. As a rock guy myself, that is how I like to hear the drums. Ginger Baker did it. John Bonham did it. And even Bill Ward did it. I don’t care for a completely dead sounding kit. Some muffling is okay depending on the music style for a different attack. But to me, deadening the drums too much sounds too “small”.

I bought this Slingerland BR 80N drum set way back in 1971. No way did I ever think I would use it with my own Ken Loomer Big Band doing concerts. I took super care of these drums for sure. So the drums ar over 50 years old and still the best sounding drums I have ever played on. Thanks for your comment James.

Funny you said from another galaxy. I`m big into astronomy and had my telescope out last night looking at some galaxies. One was M82 in Ursa Major which is part of the Big Dipper. Maybe I`m from M82! Thanks for your comment.
Was no music @ my elementary school 30 miles from town, so I made drums out of quaker oat tubes, with plastic coffee can lids for heads, & used chopstix, which are better for small-child hands, til big enough for full-aize sticks.
By age 10, I had driven my family sufficiently nuts that they took me into town for private lessons, & I learned to read music. Took 2 years of piano-theory/composition while still playing drums in Symphonic band, Jazz big-band, & marching band, + several extra-curricular bands, thru college. I still play with @ least 2-3 bands a week, sometimes 5 in 1 week, today @ 68 years old.

I was inspired in 1961 or '62 when my dad, who was a part-time guitarist musician and playing many years since WWII at different events in the greater Indianapolis area, one night was watching TV and one of the local TV stations played "The Gene Krupa Story" starring Sal Mineo playing as Krupa. I was hooked immediately on wanting to play the drums. Within a couple of years I got the chance. Took lessons in the summer of 1963 while I was nearing my entry to 6th grade. That fall, my folks bought me my first and only drum: a Slingerland white pearl to play in the school band. Exciting, it was, and man did I practice on that thing a lot at home!
Slingerland drums has always been my all-time favorite percussion brand...I would put Ludwig second and Gretch third cause I'm from the "old school" guys who remember many rock and jazz bands with those brands.
This solo performance was excellent! I'm sure Krupa and Buddy Rich as well as Joe Morello would have loved it!

The same stuff you have, a bit more or less...and yet, the High-Hat cymbals would be 16" thin styled, for that nice, crisp "chink sound" (as my assistant band director in high school, whi was a jazz drummer, Mr. Jim Lucas, said he liked and, had on the Gretch brand silver-sparkel four piece set back in the 1960's for our jazz band numbers) ... add in cymbals my choices: 18"... 20"... and, a 25". All these would be thin-crash and, Zildjian brand - the brand that, in my opinion is "the king of cymbals" in quality overall.
Drumsticks: I guess that is an area one would have to try out to find the best sound and sturdiness (I guess like the very amazing looks and sound of the drum corps from Switzerland: "Top Secret")
A good cowbell (and, I have an original real cowbell that my mom gave to me that was actually worn on a cow or two from the 1930s and '40s by a Georgia born and bred cow...and, it's loud!). Oh, don't forget the drum brushes. They are personal choice too. And...a super-sturdy chair to rattle those lovely Slingerland drums!
Ken...if your band comes to Atlanta for a performance, I'd like to see it. Might even get one of our two drummers in our church to come along.
Oh...you might be asking yourself..."What ever happened to that 1963 Slingerland white pearl snare drum?" Well...I'm somewhat ashamed to say that in the summer of 1971, I sold it to a 14 year old African-American boy who, with his father, came by at the house after seeing my ad to sell it in the Indianapolis Star/News newspaper ad. Sold it for, I think, $100. The boy got with it, a very good looking Ludwig snare/stand carry case and, my 14" Italian made cymbal and 1920s era stand. (Don't remember the brand of cymbal. Dad found it at one of his favorite music stores: Arthur's in Indy) Gosh! Wish I had kept the drum...though I hardly used it after graduation from high school (Lawrence Central High).

One of the rare times you will hear an open sounding bass drum. Most drummers today have the dead sounding bass drum. Nothing wrong with the dead sound if that is what you like as a drummer. Glad you like this open sounding bass drum. Being a drummer Big Band leader is just a joy for me to do since I get to work with so many outstanding musicians. Sure it takes hard work of putting all the music together, hiring the musicians, getting the jobs, promoting the band, and so much more, but I do it because I love the Big Band music so much. When I did recent big music festival, I had so many young people who came up to me after the concert saying they never heard a Big Band live before and now love the music I played. That made me feel great as a band leader. When was the last time you ever saw a jazz musician or jazz band on any of the Lat Night Talk Shows? It`s Never!! So at least I can put on the 100`s of concerts I have done on my channel to promote my band. I`m getting new fans all the time. Thanks so much Jason for your comment.

A lot of drummers don`t play a buzz roll. I try to make mine as smooth as possible. For some reason, it takes forever to upload a video to 1080. So I just use the lower one which to me looks good. Then again what do I know about computers and how to do all of this stuff. Thanks for your comment.

The Rich volume Big Swing Face with the kit tuned to Buddy’s liking was one we worked up in stage band. Actually got the Holman arrangement within few months of release - this version is just a super chart. The drummer on this simply superb. And got the melodic quotes goin’.
Wonderful you got to play in your stage band doing this excellent BR chart Big Swing Face which was arranged and composed by Bill Potts back in 1967. First you must have a love of what you do. I enjoy so much being a drummer Big Band leader and doing these concerts. I always give 100% to the music I play. When it`s my turn to do a solo, I want it to be dynamic and exciting for the people who come out to my concerts. I practiced long and hard to get the right drum technique needed to do the type of solo I wanted to do. Most important I wanted to do my best to support my fellow musicians with my drumming with feel for the music I play in my Big Band. The sound of the drums is important to me. So many drummers don`t play a buzz roll anymore. Buddy was a master at doing this roll for sure. It has to be smooth and even. I use a lot of dynamic`s doing this buzz roll which I love to do. More important is the music and that as a drummer Big Band leader, I get to play this great music for the people. For me, my unique skill is putting this 16 piece Big Band together. It`s a massive amount of work, but I love working with all of these professional musicians playing this great music. @@KenLoomer Ken, I have commented on your drums and playing before and I can't agree more with your perspective on tuning. I have a 1961 Slingerland four-piece that I completely reconditioned, to include oiling the interiors and putting a layer of fiberglass on the exteriors of the toms and bass before covering them. With a set of coated+clear Ambassadors on the toms and the bass wide open, they sound like a pure piece of art and are capable of lasting for decades to come. Your set is the closest I've ever heard to mine. I salute you and everything you do to keep this music and these drums going.

These drums project so well with no mic`s on them. I have posted so many concerts that I have played with my Big Band at so many venues. Ken - you’re a fantastic drummer and the Slingerlands sound great! To me, best sounding drums I’ve heard are still Ringo’s Ludwig super classic maple kit from the Let it Be/Abbey Road LP’s
@@scottm838 Of course thoses were studio recordings made back in 1969 when Ringo played the Ludwig Classic 3 toms drum set over 50 years ago now. His only drum solo on the song THE END on the ABBEY Road record is a classic sound. I love that record! Ringo at 82 is still playing and looking great. He is the one drummer I would love to meet of any drummer playing today. In this live recording of my Big Band, the Slingerland drums I have also is over 50 years old and is the best sounding drums I ever played. That big full open tone fits my style of playing so well. I now have a 24” bass drum,, No Muffling and in a relatively quiet room it’s the most gorgeous thing you will ever hear-- in louder spaces I’m sure some of the beauty is lost --
I learned so much more about bass drum control with this open sound tuning. I can play very soft with that bass drum and my foot can now do it with ease. If I want more volume, so easy to do since the bass drum can project the sound better than a muffled dead tuning. Thanks for your comment.

It`s a rare Slingerland BR model 4x14 inch snare drum with the chrome over brass straight edge hoops. With this wide open tuning it gives me a very crisp sound that projects so well. Doing buzz rolls on that sane drum just sounds so good. Thanks for your comment.

Great showmanship and talent. Had an original Krupa Slingerland kit in the 70's. Had his name on the high hat pedal and a wooden thrown seat. Sold the set but kept the thrown. Thanks for the show!

I had that exact kit! It came with a tambourine snare. I got it in 1975. I gave it to a friend 7 years ago. It still looks great!!
Wonderful you got to own and play one of the best drum sets ever made in that Slingerland BR 80N model. Slingerland during this time in the 70`s put a blue tint on the Marine Peal so it would not yellow as much. I`m sure glad I took super care of my Slingerland drums. First thing I notice is how the drummer holds the stick in his/her left hand. Classical grip. Bravo! Slingerland kit is great also. Technique and dynamics noted.
I use the traditional grip for my left hand. I grip my left hand stick near the middle like what Buddy Rich, Joe Morello and Louie Bellson did. So much better for me to playing softly with this grip. These classic Slingerland drums with the big wide open clear tone works great for the type of drum technique that I have. Thanks for your comment.

I´m an amateur drummer myself and it would be a dream come true trying to play that kit! I have a Tama Superstar kit from 1983 which works very well in most circumstances but in a big band the Slingerlands outshines all drums by far in my opinion. @@KenLoomer

Dude...that was great!!! Life long drummer. I met and saw Louis Bellson do a clinic in Vegas when I was 9 and it changed my life. His solo was very similar to yours...but it was Bellson
Louie Bellson was one of the great drummers of all time. I got to know Louie and he was always so kind to me. I use to see Louie every year at Disney World in Florida. He even gave me a lesson and let me sit in with his small jazz band. One time he finally brought his Big Band to Disney World and he and the band were just amazing. I told him of a few charts he played that I would love to do with my Big Big. Like the amazing person he is, he asked for my address and gave them to me. Of course I have posted my Big Band doing those Louie Bellson charts on my channel. I love his brush work, so I got to do the chart he composed call Brush Tap. I got to meet both Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich. I think Buddy would be most happy that a drummer like me has a Big Band. I got to know Buddy and I told him I wanted to have a Big Band like his because I love the music so much. He said "Ken don`t ever let anyone tell you can`t have your own Big Band to play the music you love. Just work hard young man and do it". Best advise I ever got. The good news is that I did work hard and as you can see, my dream of having my own Big Band has come true. Buddy even gave me a drum lesson. Your comment means a lot to me. I got to know both Buddy Rich and Ed Shaughnessy. The reason why I have my own Big Band is because of Buddy and Ed. I saw Buddy live so many times with his amazing Big Band. It was his Big Band music that impressed me the most. The way he played the drums to make the music feel so much better was just amazing. Of course watching Johnny Carson with that Great Tonight Show Big Band with Ed Shaughnessy made me want to have my own Big Band. Buddy was always so kind to me. He even gave me a drum lesson and let me play on his Slingerland drums. I learned from drummers like Buddy Rich, Joe Morello and Sonny Payne who used the press or buzz roll many times when playing a solo. The hard part is using dynamic`s, playing from very soft to loud in doing this press roll. One day I will have to make a video on my technique on how to do a very smooth press rolls. Most drummers don`t use this roll very much. Thanks so much for your comment.

Not with my drumming, but the fact that I as a drummer did all the hard work to put together a swinging Big Band. It was always about the music first for Buddy. I got to know Buddy a little bit since I saw him live so much. We got to hang out and he was always so kind to me. He even gave me a drum lesson and let me play on his Slingerland drums. One time I told Buddy I wanted to have my own Big Band like his because I loved the music he played so much. He told me "Ken, don`t ever let anyone tell you can`t have your own Big Band to play the music you love. Just work hard young man and do it". Well I did work hard and I`m sure Buddy would be impressed that I put together a swinging Big Band in this day and age for the people to hear live. When it`s my turn to do a solo, I want it to be exciting and dynamic which I learned from the great one. WHAAAAT AAAAA SOUND!!! Rich, full, powerful, yet not aggressive. The drums have a beautiful ring to them, without too much overtone, bleeding into each others notes. Style is crisp and clear. Rudiments are brightly distinctive. Thank you for taking us back to a Jazz period that is legendary in the world of music and drumming. It`s the old school of drum tuning to bring out a full open tone out of these classic Slingerland drums. Must remember I`m using no mic`s on the drums going through a mixing board. What you hear is the real sound of the drums in this concert hall. I`m just an old school drummer that enjoys this drum sound so much. I think it makes me play better and I get so many different sounds out of each drum. Thanks so much Tim for your comment.

Welllllllll, you've captured it SPOT ON Ken. I completely understand that sound. Growing up just outside of Boston. I was fortunate enough to have a best friend, whose dad was the late great famous Jazz drummer and percussionist for the Boston Pops / Symphony Orchestra, Fred Buda. His personal kit at home was a Premier four piece. 22"bass, 13"tom, 16"floor. REMO classic white coated heads. No muffling at all. All tuned high, with a ring tone as sweet as church bells. What a sound!!!🤘🏻🥁❤️
@@timcloutier3729 Great story about your friends dad Fred Buda. I`m sure I have seen him play from watching the Boston Pops Symphony on TV in the 70`s. You can hear real notes come out of the drums with this wide open full tone tuning. Thanks Tim for your comment.
I bought a similar set of Marine Pearl Slingerland drums - same as above but with two mounted toms - in 1972. Like an idiot, I eventually played them with open bottoms and muted heads like most rock drummers of the day. Sold the set in 1980; one of the biggest mistakes I ever made in my life.
I also wished I did not sell some of my drums I use to own. Now that DW owns the Slingerland name, maybe they will bring back the way Slingerland made their drums.

It is so much better hearing it live. But I`m so glad I video so many of my Big Band concerts to promote this great music. So sad you don`t see bands like mine on TV anymore. When was the last time you ever saw a jazz musician on any of the late night talk shows. It never! Thanks for your comment.

By the way, I also saw Steve Smith from Journey with his Jazz Band Vital Information live (In a small venue on campus when I was in college... I learned how to arrange music so I could tell my outstanding musicians how I want the charts to be played. It`s always about the music first for me. Perfect balance between Quality musician and Quality Instrument right there. My opinion....Slingerland drums were made for, and ideal for that application right there. They are a wonderful Jazz set, and sound just like the kits the greats played in their day when Wonderful Bands played Wonderful music. I had the privilege to play on a couple Slingerland kits including a Buddy Rich set, and should have bought the Buddy Rich set when I had the chance a long time ago. Tremendous Sound. You really put on a clinic there Ken. Super rudimental and polished technique. One can tell you were influenced by the greats. I admire your dedication and ability to be able to play like that.

For jazz music that I play with my Ken Loomer Big Band, traditional grip is better than the matched grip. I give my excellent bass player a pass since he was checking out the music chart of what he has to play when I count the band back in after my solo. Thanks so much for your comment.

Early 70s Slingerlands really have that wonderful tone similar to Ludwigs of that period. For me the Slingerlands were the best of that era. Of course it helps to have a monster drummer play them!
My 71 classic Slingerland drums were just made so well. It had the 3 ply maple, poplar, maple with solid maple rings and clear lacquer shells that gave it that clear big open tone that I love so much. Thanks so much for your comment.

Kenny, You Killed it Man. Loved the sound of the Snare, especially. What barnd and type of Batter heads did you use?? The nice open Un Miked drum sounds was a welcomed Treat for me. I struggle playing at home to match my drum sounds to those on You Tube videos and recordings. I now realize how much the sounds are shaped by Miking and Equing the drums. This was Pure and Simple DRUMS.
Well a big part of the sound of the drums is the way a drum shell is made. Slingerland back in 71 used a 3 ply maple, poplar, maple with rock maple rings. This gives a warm sound to the drums. By using Remo Ambassador heads top and bottom, I able to get that big wide open full tone. Since I`m using no mic`s on the drums, you hear the real tone of each drum. Thanks for your comment.

It`s a drum sound you really don`t hear very much anymore. Every drum set I sit in on today has that same dead bass drum, all muffled tom sound with no tone. Like I said, it your drums, you tune them any way you like. Thanks for your comment.

I had a Buddy Rich set in the mid 70's. Man I miss those drums and that sound. Great playing as always Ken and the band.
The best part for me owning these Slingerland drums is that it has the perfect sound for the type of Big Band arrangements that I play. I did the same thing in selling some snare drums I wish I still had. Thanks for your comment.

My first set ever was 1975 wooden Slingerland Set......... 2 tone gold and purple from my great MOM!! Red Hydraulic skins would soon follow..DEEP SOUND!

That snare drum sound is ridiculous, open or closed 🙌🙌
The famous 1971 Slingerland BR 4x14 inch snare with the chrome over brass straight edge hoops. No mic`s on the snare and it just projects so well with that crisp clear sound. The buzz rolls I can do on that snare drum sounds as smooth as silk. Glad you notice my snare drum sound.
Hearing this makes me want to dust off my Slingerland kit, bought in 1980, and play. Whatta drummer!!!
