The Evolution of Jemma Rix - "Defying Gravity"

- Jemma Rix is one of Wicked’s longest-serving cast members, performing the role of Elphaba over 1000 times in 5 different countries for nearly 10 years. Beginning her Wicked career in a condensed version of the show at Universal Studios in Japan, she later went on to become the official stand-by in the first Australian production of Wicked before taking over as lead. This video is intended to showcase Jemma’s powerhouse rendition of “Defying Gravity”, highlighting nine of her best performances between 2006 and 2015, proving just how consistent and vocally strong she has remained over the years and how her vocal riffs and belt have developed over time. I don’t doubt that she’ll be asked to revive her performance again one day. One of the best Elphaba’s ever!
UPDATE: This is the ORIGINAL "Evolution of Elphaba" video! It seems I've started a trend by creating this video... there are now several "Evolution" videos appearing on RUclips by other users, including compilations for Willemijn Verkaik, Kerry Ellis, Idina Menzel and Stephanie Block. Check 'em out!
And the award for the most consistent Elphaba goes to
Exactly. Consistency over that time frame is incredible.
Daniel Stephens Jessica Vosk has stolen that title but jemma is amazing
@@nasirroper4011 she played it in two productions for a combined period of what...two years? Jemma Rix has played the part for almost a decade in various productions. Willemijn Verkaik has played it for a solid decade in 3 languages and 4 countries. I don't get the sudden hype for Vosk.
@@NairAthul I don't get it either. I've seen Wicked about 30 times in 4 different countries and 3 languages. I saw Jessica Vosk on Broadway in 2019 and she was very good, as you'd expect by a professional, but nothing extraordinary. If we talk about consistency I'd give that to either Jemma or Willemijn, too, although I never saw Jemma live. Or even many of the other Elphabas who have played the role for more than 4-5 years.
Everyone has their favourite Elphaba and if Vosk is your absolute favourite that's great but I don't get why people act like she created a new role or even invented many of the riffs etc. She is one of the most recent performers in a long row of Elphies in the many years Wicked has been playing around the world and I personally know many Elphabas I liked a lot better who almost never get credit and many people don't even seem to know of like all the German understudies for example.
@@NairAthul I think Willemijn and Jemma are the most consistent Elphabas tbh
She's very high up on my list of women who deserve to play the role on Broadway/
She needs to be on Broadway ASAP. I want either her or Jennifer DiNoia to become leads on Broadway after Caroline goes.
Violet Manu You took the words right out of my mouth. JEMMA needs to join the NY Company!!!
Violet Manu Well looks like you got your wish (Jennifer Dinoia is now Elphie on Broadway)
I'm so glad she was my first live Elphie.
After listening to the top 4 Elphabas that people seem to point to (on youtube, not live- I can only wish!), Jemma is by far the best, in my opinion, from a technical perspective. Her voice is just so damn pretty, clear as a bell, and full-- still powerful. It seems like her sound happened in 2010, I hear a distinct difference. It's hard to step away from the original and Idina has a charm and character in the imperfections in her voice. But Jemma is WOW for me, FLAWLESS.
She has the most voice consistency of any Elphie I've ever heard.
Saw her in Brisbane this year (2015) my jaw dropped, closed, and dropped again!
I personally LOVE it when she goes UP to sing the word "DOWN" (on the second "bring me down" towards the end. Looks like she's stopped doing so from Auckland 2013 onwards :(. Don't blame her if it puts too much work on her - but when she did that when i saw her live, I was not expecting that and it was truly magical.
Her voice has "unlimited" range! Wow! Another reason to believe the existence of God! I also watched her Witch Switch video and she can also hit Glinda's high notes perfectly.
jheuzthemusical Wow! Is she good at the low note in i'm not that girl too? If she is that's truly amazing.
Alex Pryor she doesn’t hit the low note in INTG. She goes up instead
'Nobody!' 1:01 Aussie accent on point - laugh every time, heehee! Her trademark sound starts to peep through in 2010, then 2011 she really kicks in with the power in her voice and just gets better and more perfect from then on. Seriously thank you, and a great job making this vid, love seeing her journey to becoming the best Elphaba where she's at today. Well done, Jem!!! :) Xxx
Genevieve Trinh she was so shaky in 2006. Amazing how much she improved. She hits the high notes perfectly without straining
Her consistency, especially her belt, is phenomenal. She is one of my absolute favorite Elphabas and when she comes to Broadway, I will do everything in my power to go see her.
If she doesn't get cast as Elphaba in the Wicked movie, imma be pissed! If not her, I at least hope they cast someone who has played her on Broadway and not some big name who can't do it justice but will bring in the money *cough* Lea Michelle *cough*
pancreas07 I really want Lindsay Mendez our resident Fly Girl
pancreas07 So funny to think Jenny is now leading the Broadway company after this was written two years ago! 😍
Josh Bartsch yes, she would be so good
pancreas07 Agreed but Shoshana Bean or Willemijn Verkaik would be great too. I really would like Willemijn to be Elphaba in the movie. She can act really good, has a good evil voice, and the cackle. I saw Anna Kendrick as an option and I was like, "hELL NAW"
pancreas07 omg they should cast Taylor Swift
I love how Aussie her first "And nobody" was.
That first nobody! Her accent was so strong
Lover her "sky"-riff! A pretty consistent one over all those years too. Love her little riff on the 2nd "down" when she does it and her "hooOOOOwww IIII-iii". Would love to see her acting!
crazy how you need to update this now in 2024!!!!
She just bloody gorgious. Great singer and drop dead Helen of Troy beautiful! Elphaba Thropp Ozian Vogue cover girl!
She needs to come to London!
Eddie Maggs And if she does she'll get to work with Suzie Mathers again
The best Elphaba, and one of the greatest Australians.
Saw get this year (2015) in Perth and it was awesome!! I got chills!!!
I've been lucky enough to see Jemma as Elphaba twice and she's bloody AMAZING. Vocals always on point. Will be seeing the Broadway show in November and whoever is Elphaba (sorry haven't looked into it lol) better be good because I'll definitely be comparing.
How was it? :P
She is so freaking talented. I saw her in Sydney last year for the first time and my jaw literally dropped to the floor, so peeved I couldn't meet her but so god damn lucky to have watched her incredible talent. She should do Broadway for sure but I couldn't imagine her not being on Australian soil!! :))
Jemma Played Elphaba as well on Wicked Manila year 2014.
She's so talented! I had the opportunity to watch her last year. She's phenomenal! With the Wicked movie they're planning, she deserves to be casted as Elphaba on it!
She has definitely improved from her original form and grew with each of the years. Experience building on experience.
saw her in melbourne in about 2013, she was incredible! that show was the one that got me into theatre and it was all because of jemma's stunning voice!
Had the absolute privilege of seeing her in Singapore in 2012. That night she was SPOT ON (she is all time, let's be real). It was my first theater experience and I will never, ever forget it because it was SO GOOD.
Thank You so much for this. I absolutely adore Jemma. She was the first ever Elphaba that I saw and she was amazing.
Where'd you get the instrumental section you used in the beginning to fade into the first clip? It sounds REALLY nice...
Saw her in Singapore a few years back and she was spectacular :) my favourite of hers is the way she sings the part that goes "Tell them how I" ❤️
I SURE HOPE SHE STILL PERFORMS IN AUSTRAILIA CUZ IMMA SEE HER😍😍💝💝❤💖👌🏾☺😩
I’m so happy that she was my first Elphaba...
#BestSingerEVER!
In love with this video!
BROADWAY PLEASE
Thanks so much for this video
Jemma was easily the world’s best during her time with Wicked!
Top 2 of all time
1. Alice Fearn
2. Jemma Rix
Is she the only universal studios Elphaba that ended up getting cast in a full production?
All the Glinda's voices are squeaky
Most of them were probably Lucy Durack. She's pretty unmistakeable.
Suzie Mathers was Glinda in Singapore, New Zealand, Philippines and the performances in Australia after 2014. Lucy Durack was Glinda in the early Australia performances 2014 and prior.
I'm Japan y was she singing in English but the others were singing in Japeneze
It was the condensed version at Universal Studios. The performance was made for English tourists going to Universal. But, there was also a Japanese one outside of Universal :)
Will Wicked come back to Australia?
I really really hope so
she basically kept nothing of her USJ interpretation when she went to Melbourne
tbh I kind of prefer how she phrased certain stuff in USJ
jemma rix is the only elphaba in both The Wizard of Oz from Andrew Lloyd Webber and wicked. I want to see Idina get in the wizard of oz so that she can be elphie again, just the more scary version.
