  • Dr Tinashe Mushakavanhu reflects on missing or unrecorded perspectives in African history in the Cecil John Rhodes archive held in the Bodleian’s Weston Library. He focuses on story of the formation of Zimbabwe and questions what African history means when told by voices from outside its communities.
Using literary techniques and experiences inspired by the author Dambudzo Marechera, Dr Mushakavanhu creates a “mirror archive” to reveal the untold stories that counter established narratives and rethink the representation of African history in academic archives.
Dr. Tinashe Mushakavanhu is a Junior Research Fellow in African & Comparative Literature at St Anne's College, Oxford.
This film is part of the Bodleian Libraries project ‘We Are Our History’ which helps the Libraries take a close look at its collections, its work with audiences and its staffing through the lens of race and the legacies of the British Empire. www.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/about/l...
