We benefit the most through forgiveness. It can be difficult, but we can ask God to help us, show us how to forgive - and He will do it!❤

Forgiveness is one of the number one things that is totally twisted by the false church. God says we are to forgive as He forgives. Does God forgive us without our true repentance? NO! Neither should we. We can only forgive someone if they have truly repented and made restitution. Jesus said in Luke 17:3 “and IF THEY REPENT, forgive them”. Yet so many confused or false Christian’s shove forgiveness down people’s throats, and they put pressure and condemnation on the one who has been sinned against, instead of on the one who sinned and is not the slightest bit sorry! God is not unreasonable or mean, expecting us to forgive wicked people who could not care less about how they have hurt us or others. He tells us to stay away from the wicked. He only ever asks us to forgive someone if they actually, truly repent.

You’ve raised a very important point about forgiveness, which indeed is a vital but often misunderstood aspect of Christian teaching.
Jesus indeed emphasizes the necessity of repentance for forgiveness in several passages, like Luke 17:3-4, where He instructs, “If your brother or sister sins against you, rebuke them; and if they repent, forgive them.” This clearly ties forgiveness to the offender's repentance, highlighting that genuine change of heart is crucial.
At the same time, other Scriptures encourage a broader approach to forgiveness. For example, in Matthew 6:14-15, Jesus teaches, “For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.” This seems to suggest a more unconditional approach, urging us to forgive as freely as we hope to be forgiven by God.
The tension between these teachings suggests that Christian forgiveness involves a complex balance-promoting a grace that mirrors God's unconditional love while also acknowledging the importance of repentance. It’s about striving to forgive in a way that aims for reconciliation and transformation, rather than merely excusing hurtful behaviors.
These nuances in the doctrine of forgiveness are what make living out our faith in real-world contexts challenging yet profoundly rewarding.

We should forgive people (whether they ask or not), but that doesn’t mean we must forget the offense. It also doesn’t mean you must go back to the person and resume a relationship. Thus the statement “Forgive and forget” is incorrect guidance when it comes to forgiving those who have hurt and/or abused you. Forgive, and learn from it is a better adage. Jesus commands us to forgive, but “forget” is not part of that. That said, there is a special place in hell for this woman’s father…

@@dorothyann6333 that’s not forgiveness. Forgiveness is not possible without two active parties. The one who was sinned against and the one who sinned. The one who sins needs to genuinely repent to the one they sinned against and then the one sinned against can forgive. Forgiveness with only one party ‘forgiving’ a person who is not even sorry is not possible. Jesus said to love your enemies, sure. Pray for those who persecute you. But He never, ever expected us to forgive an unrepentant offender, because forgiveness is reconciling the relationship as if the sin is wiped away. Anything less is not forgiveness. Also, we are never to associate with the wicked. This man who murdered so many in heinous ways is wicked, and it says in the bible God hates the wicked and is angry at them every day. There is such a thing as a ‘reprobate’ and this man is one. We are never to go near or associate with wolves in sheep’s clothing like that. People who claim to be Christian’s need to stop teaching those false things, as if we need to forgive wolves in sheep’s clothing who make their false prison house confessions of faith, and stop putting true Christian’s in danger of these wolves .

@@100huntley what Jesus said in Matthew 6:14-15 is not different to what He said in Luke 17:3-4. He already established what forgiveness is in Luke 17:3-4… that is can only happen if the offender truly repents. Just because He didn’t mention repentance in Matthew 6:14-15 it doesn’t mean He was saying repentance is not necessary. He was talking to a crowd who already knew forgiveness was only possible if the offender repents.
If anyone would like to understand this more, please look up a sermon series from pastor Jimmy Hinton on forgiveness.

@@nr1785 Jesus said to forgive your enemies, but nothing about a prerequisite of, “if they ask for it,” or about the relationship having to be restored. He said if you do not forgive others, you won’t be forgiven by your Father in heaven.
