- Moog picks up the most over-rated (possibly under-rated) sports car of all time in a surprising vehicle choice that even Marty didn't see coming. But with all his other cars, why would he buy this? Well, he bought it because he doesn't like it (yes you read that right)

My wife has an auto 86 she loves to death. The cam change is there, it's just there is such a huge midrange torque hole. Hey, those phasers are so damn big, they would want to do something. What's Subaru for VTEC-YO? NOTHING!

As an 86 owner, I would recommend removing the noise generator, it was one of the first things I did and now it sounds clean. Especially because after installing a catback exhaust, it sounded terrible having fake sound being pumped into the cabin.

Not completely true, a lot of things that we like, we like before trying them. Most of thingsthat we like or don't like, we decide before even trying.. The opinion gets stronger or changes drastically after trying because you're surprised..

@Boo Kyron 2019+ Miatas have 180hp, rev to 7500, and weigh 2300lbs. Vs the BRZ here having 200hp, revving to 7k, and weighing 2700lbs. Miata is always the answer

It’s cars like this that help keep RWD / Manual transmission alive, it’s a great beginner car.
Brz is kinda expensive for a beginners car 😳 i rather stick to e36/46/39, as i own a e39 myself
It's quite expensive still because it's not very old, and 200hp in a ~1200kg car might be too much for some beginner drivers.
But, as a second car or something it'd be good
I got a '15 Kia Cerato 6spd manual hatchback as my first car and 148hp felt fast for a little bit to me, now it's just high revving fun and sounds really nice with a pod filter. It's helped me learn to rev match as well :))

@@MousemanLV i get that but their talking about a new entry level car u can get easy dealer finance on. not old cars with issues. have had three e46's bmws there good but heavy only real power gains are engine swaps or stupidly expensive turbo conversion or supercharger. love bmw but too much weight in the company car motorway cruisers they were designed as #luxobarge

I live in a community of car people there are a lot of people who daily thease things because they "look cool and are fun". When i ask them how fast the zero to sixty is they dont like to answer and sadly a prius will beat it. In the end they can do some nice skids because its not meant for speed. Its meant for drifting.
@@burntchickennugget191 it's a bit of an exaggeration that a Prius will beat it though, isn't it? Agree they're not fast (comfortably slower than both of my Fiestas) but they are brisk enough to make decent progress.

There's a guy on RUclips who recently converted the Toyota version of the BRZ to electric, 6 speed with a Nissan Leaf motor. Maybe Moog could make it faster and with more skids going that route.

19mm irrigation end cap from Bunnings for $1.05 will plug the hole in the footwell properly.
Or use the plug from the 12V outlet in the glow compartment.
Why not just remove it from the intake itself? I assume they'll do a silicone pipe with a HKS cai or something similar anyway.

I honestly thought that it was going to be a new Civic Type-R for some reason, as they both don't really like Hondas. I was a bit impressed at their choice though, could have been a lot worse and honestly, an 86 is long overdue on this channel.

Some really solid supercharger kits out there. only reason I didn't go BRZ+ supercharger is I could get a GT350 for roughly what I'd put into a BRZ to get it where I wanted it. Mustang got the styling, big mclargehuge tires, power, brakes, etc all pre-installed and working correctly. Moog can't run down to the corner Ford dealer for one so.....

An an 86 owner that has done it all short of a Built block, i purchased my FR-S and did everything you could possibly do on a budget to make it "Fast" Intake, Exhaust, Tune, Tires, E85. I always felt like at the end of the day it needed more power, not a ton more but just enough. Fast forward to just last year when I attached a turbo kit to it, which utilized an Equal Length header configuration and a 3in exhuast setuppaired with a Percicion 5431e turbo. I was able to push it at 10psi which netted me about 270+WHP on the stock block! 300-350HP seems to be the perfect place where this platform truly shines and can be a proper handling machine with a good amount of power. You get that drama from the spool, the beautiful sounds of induction and good amount of torque to keep those wheels spinning not only in 1st but in 2nd and 3rd gear as well. Moog I hear you on keeping to the purity of the 86 platform with it being NA but i can attest that on these machines once you introduce boost... you will change your mind completly on the platform :)
So I've owned an 18 brz for 2 years and 45,000 miles. The facelift cars solve a lot of problems, a great place to start looking for acceleration in a pre facelift car is swapping the 4.1 diff for the new 4.3. For staying NA; itbs, headers, and tune fix a lot of the acceleration problems, the real problem isn't really the amount of power but the torque dip and how it feels to your butt dyno. Filling in mid range torque really changes the dynamic of the car because you finally get linear power where before it just feels like perpetual turbo lag but with no boost payoff, which is why i think everyone seems determined to FI these cars. In reality they're fun on a track, I took mine to VIR and even though that is a power track I still had fun, granted it's hard to have a bad day on track. However the real use case for these cars are to be able to drive in a spirited manner on the streets and not really be a danger to everyone else. I drove a 335i before the brz and it was fun but i could hit 80mph in 2nd gear in less than 6 seconds from a start, plus how isolated the car felt, no backroad was really fun because I felt like I couldn't push the car plus inside of it I couldn't feel the speed at all. 80 felt like 30. For pure road application, and especially as a daily driver or only car, the brz fills every need except for mid-range torque. Even in terms of space, I moved with the brz and it fit almost everything except for furniture of course.
Had my '17 for almost 3 years now. Best car I've owned. Header and tune fixes the torque dip and sound. More exhaust changes only improve it. If you want raw acceleration, you bought the wrong car (buy a bike). An absolute delight to drive and daily.
Great explanation! So many people misunderstand this car. I do not believe it needs FI. Just fix that torque dip, the way it should have come from factory and I believe this car would have a much better reputation.
I love this explanation because it may be what I'm missing with my current 2020 WRX and my last car, a 2006 S4. I drive some fun curvy roads but in order to really use the car to even 8/10th I'm well over the speed limit and I just can't do that. I have an MR2 Turbo I'm working on right now and I'm hoping that fills that void but otherwise I may find myself looking for one of these or even a miata.

@@Wehiremonkeys but they do have a linear powerband. Plus the 86's main fault is the lack of torque. No balls down low into lethargic power up top.
Yeah, right-hand drive BRZ is much easier to supercharge because of the steering rack on the right. There's not as much space around the engine as in the LHD model.

😂 I so so much like the beginning of this video. :D It really shows how well you communicate with each other, how much time you have spent with each other and how well you know each other and at the same time Moog is there telling a really interesting story with Marty backing him up with it.

There is a take off from the airbox that runs into the foot well. The TRD plastic things basically change the note of the sound in the cabin that makes more noise from 7000 rpm.
My Mum bought one and chopped it in 8 weeks later.

I drove an 86 up the Goodwood Hill Climb back before the official release. They are fun, you're not going to scare any Supras, but you're going to have a smile on your face when you get out. As a Celica owner, they're a similar experience.

Subaru's position is that it is easy for the aftermarket to add power but hard for them to change fundamental things about the car (weight, rigidity, cog): ruclips.net/video/GdZcX7Hawhk/видео.html
Seems like a pretty solid position to me. I bought one in '13 and haven't looked back, as a starting base for a car it is a really solid one, particularly if you enjoy hitting the track on a reasonable budget.
tbh I call bs on this. It would of been very cheap for them to build the engine so that it could readily handle boost, but they didn't.
I'll agree with the hard to change aspects, but these cars aren't that easy or cheap to make a decent amount of extra power with.
Watch out for the valve spring recall. Also the cap for the cigarette lighter in the glovebox fits over the sound tube hole in the firewall.

The sound tubes supposedly alter the in cabin sound of the engine. However all they are is a tube with either no obstruction for the “loudest” sound to completely blocked off for the “quietest” sound. The standard sound tube that is fitted to the car at the factory has a small piece of foam in it. Remove the piece of foam and you have the equivalent of the “loudest” tube. The tube is located behind the carpet in the drivers footwell so the sound is already dampened by that and the foam can be removed with a pair of tweezers, no need to skin knuckles trying to work in the engine bay. I owned one of the first 86s and those TRD sound tubes were around $60 in 2012, with a pair of tweezers I saved myself some money.
It’s so awesome hearing your backstory at the beginning of the video. I also started out in high school in 1995 playing guitar in a metal band also listening to Deicide and Cannibal Corpse. Drummers were the most flaky so I picked up drums so that I knew we would always have a drummer. Man, the good ol days. Thanks for sharing. I’d like to hear the audio of that clip of you playing drums at the beginning. Can we get that???

Take it to some twisty roads, then you'll see why we love them.
The sound changer goes on a tube, which comes off the intake into the cabin. It basically has 3 different ones with three different levels of dampening. The red one is the loudest of course

The TRD sound changer set will simply limit the amount of induction noise reaching the cabin by putting a physical barrier of different sizes (the "silent" is completely blocked). Now you just need to get the P-Plater BRZ starter kit, which includes the cheapest UEL headers you can find, Open Flash Tablet canned tune, Valenti Tail Lights (third hand+at least two leds burnt), Invidia N1 Catback (possibly with rust), Wish hot air intake, katana shift knob, gutter-rashed XXR or Rota wheels, Ebay window louvers and rain guards. If you are rich, you can also get a partially cracked Rocket Bunny replica front bumper. Oh, and don't forget to tell everyone you're about to go turbocharged when you get your tax return! Cheers
I've had an FRS for just over a year now. I was so close to buying a 2015 WRX and happened to see this at a dealer near my barber. Took the FRS for a spin and that handling had me hooked. It feels like a go kart compared to the WRX because it's a few hundred pounds lighter. While the WRX is faster in a straight line, I bought this car because I have more fun taking turns at higher speeds. Looking forward to this series.

@@phuzz00 If you want to drive it quick yea it needs better tyres. It's really slidey on the stock tyres, but that is a lot of the fun.
I used to own one (2014 FT86) as my first car and indeed, it is easily lose its traction even with traction control "ON". Try on second gear after a hump and dump the pedal halfway during rain. You will notice the wheels spin off losing traction (and I was using factory supplied Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres). Also, I drove it on a windy road and the car already feels fun to drive on stock. Sadly had to trade it off with 2012 WRX sedan as a family sports car. I wish I could turn the time back and enjoy it as long as I can. Glad that you guys shown the excitement on this car and tried skids. Mad skids. :)

Been waiting for this moment for ages! I love my brz. All I can say is get hold of the tuning development turbo kit and even just a stage 1 or better 2 and its a whole new car! Mines now 287hp its a game changer
What turbo kit? I used hks kit + stroker kit 2.1L achieve 400hp
@@fujiwarahazim86 Google Tuning Development based in Warrington bud. I have there stage 1 kit on mine 287hp @ 5psi. stage 2 will see 340hp @ 8 psi with just a clutch, fuel pump, boost controller and Injectors. They have a stage 3 which is like 450hp but you need a built motor for that sadly ha
