The semifinals last year was epic. Remember we were all completely blown away by the competitive and dramatic turns in both games. Everyone was in love with college football all over again. Then the title game was a dud. But this year I think all three games will be dramatic and close, and at this point any one of the four could emerge. I would give the edge to Texas and Michigan, with Texas emerging as the champ. We shall see.
Texas is peaking and I just have this feeling people arr sleeping on them. Longhorns have incredible depth at RB, WR and talent at TE. This IS not the Texas team they beat in the Alamo Bowl. It is a MUCH improved team from last year for sure.

Joel, with all do respect. I love your show, btw. Your building up this Michigan defense without mentioning that they have played against 8 defenses that rank 100 or above on offense. Michigan is in trouble.
I think the Michigan vs Bama game comes down to how Michigan deals with milroe. If Michigan can get to milroe consistenly and keep him in the pocket consistenly this will be a extremely hard game for bama, and same thing goes for bama stopping a healthy McCarthy. I think Bama has a little bit more room for mistakes, but Michigan is great at forcing mistakes and not making them. Should be a good game I'll take Bama +1.5
Joel, why do all you "analyst" keep bringing up TX's pass defense but fell to mention Wash's pass defense which is worse than TX's? Its not like they are going to be able to stop TX's receivers.
Everyone is talking about whether Texas can stop the Washington passing game. The bigger question is can Washington stop Ewers. He is no slouch! Texas has very speedy receivers and a great running game.

Alabama doesn't even belong. The disgusting bias of the CFP committee to overlook FSU will not be forgotten. Lowly 6-6 California played Auburn as closely as Alabama did and the Big 12 had a better strength of season than the SEC. The Pac 12 was 3-0 against the Big 10 in early season games, so the bias for the SEC and Big 10, year after year, is the only reason they're here. Terrible!
@@markminer7390 P12. 3-0 vs B10. 3-1 vs B12. 1-2 vs SEC. 0-2 vs ND. None of the wins were against a ranked team. I think WSU over Wisc 7-5 was probably the best win. Wash beat Mich St 4-8 who got trounced a number of times. Miss St beat #14 AZ.
Before Michigan fans get too excited about the defense. Bama played 5 of the top 15 offenses in CFB, including the number 1 offense. Michigan hasn’t played anyone near that caliber. I respect Michigan but again schedule is telling when it comes to stats.
Before Alabama get too excited about the Alabama defense, understand that Michigan beat the #1, #2 and #3 defense in the country in the last 4 weeks of the season (as measured by YPG) with an injured QB that normally has 4.4 speed, but was not allowed to run. Very reasonable to expect Michigan to put up 30 points v. Alabama with a healthy JJ.
@@SmashTheNumbers Before the B10 champ, Mich knew they just needed a few FGs and the game is over, because everybody knows Iowa is offensively offensive. ha ha.
@@jky3889 FACT. Iowa does not have any offense all, yet is still the #17 team in the country because of their defense. That is how good their defense is. Reminder: Michigan won that game 26-0. If they can score 26 against Iowa, with an injured JJ, I think can can get to 30 with a healthy JJ.
Don't know about Michigan being the most dominant team in college football this year. They outscored their ranked opponents by a total of 41 points. Georgia outscored theirs by over 100.
That is an odd stat, but OK. Michigan goes for WINS, not point spreads. It was completely DOMINANT that Michigan ate up 7 minutes in the 4th quarter with the lead and then kicked a field goal to win it by 6 v. OSU. They were also in FG range at the end of the game. They are trying to WIN period.
@@SmashTheNumbers Point differential is a common stat. It's used in the NBA and NFL a lot, not so much in college football because the competition has little parity. Declaring a team "the most dominant" requires some kind of evidence to back it up.
@@mattstone8111 But you are not using point differential, you are modifying that stat which penalized Michigan because they played the #1, #2 and #3 YPP defenses in all of college football. Michigan was just trying to win, not run up the score. But they were in control of the game throughout. That happens with defensive/run oriented teams.
@@SmashTheNumbers That brings up another point that I've seen posted multiple times in the comments here, that Alabama has the 19th ranked defense, but they played 3 of the top 5 offenses in college football this year, and that stat may be very misleading. Because there is so little crossover between conferences it's always really hard to tell anything until the postseason games are played. I think the most important stats between Michigan and Bama is that it's a perennial postseason loser from a conference who's won 1 of the past 17 national championships vs. perennial postseason winner from a conference who's won 13 of the past 17. The odds are stacked very heavily in Alabama's favor. I'm shocked Bama isn't at least a 10 point favorite actually. I'd put their chances of winning at over 90%.
Remember MIch first play last year vs TCU? Everybody noticed the obvious long run and commentators mentioned the block by the TE, but failed to notice that the TCU linebacker knocked Schoonmaker backwards. Similar thing happened vs GA the prior year when Trayvon Walker knocked the center backwards but that time Herbstreit noted the "power and burst" of Walker. ha ha. One of the best hits in the game.

@jky3889 Exhibition game, nothing more, nothing less, a mere consulation to both teams. it's all going to be backups anyway. And besides, noles are in a lose- lose situation here. Say they beat the Bulldogs, I can already hear the talking heads. 'Yeah, they won. But it wasn't them at their full strength." And if they lose "Well look at that, they weren't meant to be in anyways." So no, I will enjoy the REAL FSU vs. UGA game in the next season.
Silly saying who will beat who. Each team is capable of winning it all. That's what makes this playoff great. Agree, hope the games live up to the hype.
Alabama / Michigan should be a good game! At least the odds makers think it'll be a close one. Michigan likely wont get any respect until they win a National Title and even then I'm sure there will be voices in the back shouting it was the weakest playoff field to date. All they can do is win the game in front of them. If Alabama goes on to win the title most likely all you'll hear about is how great Saban is and how great the team was for overcoming early season adversity. Hands down this is the most talented, experienced and consistent Michigan team since 1997. If they are going to at least play for a national title this is the year. I'd like to say it mostly rests on JJ's QB play but honestly I think it lands primarily on the running game. It will be a huge ask for the banged up OLine but the running attack needs to be there and produce early and often. This will free up play calling for JJ and the offense to keep Alabama on their heals. JJ will get pressured (a lot) and he needs to be smart and not try to dance around too much and take massive losses. First and second options not open then tuck it and run for a few yards. Donovan Edwards possibly legacy game......... Michigan MUST contain Milroe at all costs. Make him beat you with his arm (which he is capable) Alabama is a very good team and is playing very well right now but arguably they are not the same Alabama dominant team of the past few years. I think these teams are very similar in many aspects and it should be a fun game to watch! Go Blue
I don't think either Washington's or Texas' secondaries will be able to stop the other from scoring in the pass game. But Texas should dominate in run defense and run offense and I think the Texas run defense and offense will be the back-breaker for the Huskies. Texas held Ollie Johnson and Tahj Brooks to under 40 yards per game and I think Dillon Johnson will have the same problems. Oregon State held the Huskies scoreless in the second half and the Huskies could not stop the Beavers' run game; so, the Huskies are not invulnerable. Texas 42 - Huskies 38
This was good. I typed in a comment, but keyboard focus jumped off and youtube jumped off somewhere. No big deal. I don't subscribe or any of tha t useless stuff. Just SKIP ADS.
The Texas 95th ranked defense is a little misleading as they had big leads on teams which forced them to only pass as teams can’t run on UT. The game is won in the trenches and UT is elite there on both sides. Texas gets revenge on Washington 34-24! I see a rematch in the championship game with UT/Bama.

Texas vs. UW, it will be a blow out, this is the first time UW has had a healthy team in years, even and with the injuries for Texas last time, like not having Bijon last time; here UW still were more injured than Texas and missing a good portion of our UW team. As UW is due to put out a complete game. Kalen is a better coach than Sark.
Lol. Keep bringing it up. And if Michigan beats Alabama? What then?? Let me guess...."The SEC had a down year this year." Such ridiculous talk going on.
Michigan beat 3 of the top 5 defenses in the country in the last 4 weeks of the season with their starting QB injured. He has 4.4 speed and they decided to NOT let him run at all because of the injury. With a healthy JJ, its is reasonable to expect that they can score 30 v. Alabama.
Good idea. Measure a team's talent by how many overrated teams they play. Yeah...thats reliable. Coming from an SEC uncle daddy who thinks his sister is the best looking contestant in the pageant. SOS is pure corruption.
1. UW 2. Bama 3. Texas 4. Michigan UW had to play 3 straight ranked opponents to end the season and a total of 5/7 of their final games were vs ranked teams. 6 total wins over ranked teams which is the most in the country.

What has Big Blue done lately? Michigan is probably the most complete team of the 4 but Alabama is the most talented. This Alabama team is relatively weak for a typical Alabama team (but still far superior to most other teams Michigan has played) so is this the year that Saban loses to a 1 seed for the first time as a 4 seed? We'll see.
Ok Michigan fan here, as much as that would be awesome to see, Alabama is too good to keep off the s scoreboard and will be tougher than OSU. With McCarthy healthier now, Michigan will put up a good fight, but really going to come down to the defense.

I’m not saying Michigan is bad, but their Defensive Stats are HIGLH INFLATED. 8 of their Regular Season matchups were against Offenses in Ranked 100th or worst out of 132 Teams. Strength of Schedule Michigan: 35th Alabama: 3rd
Contain the edge, force him to the middle of the field and vary your pressure with a combination of stunts and blitzes. Combined with the secondary shifting around, will make it a very long day for Milroe.
I kept telling everyone the biggest the in the rose bowl is the Alabama defense up front vs the Michigan line. With kool-aid, Downs, and Arnold in the back end I think JJ gonna be sacked 5-7 times in this game.
my guess right now would be texas and michigan in the championship game, but i honestly wouldnt be suprised if it was bama washington either. but IMO michigan has just been so dominant, and texas is the most balanced team, but has struggled with consistency.
Michigan has played well against the horrible conference they play in. Their stats on defense look good just because they play the worst offenses. Ohio state was the only team with a decent offense this year and although Michigan did play them well enough to win, Alabama has more explosion when it comes to speed and breaking open big plays. It’ll be in my opinion the first time Michigan will be tested and could be their Achilles heel
Joel as a Michigan fan I still disagree with your take on our O line. Our run game has been trash all year and pass protection not very good as of late. On top of that we lost our best O lineman and captain in Zak Zinter. I hope I’m wrong but I think we’re in trouble on offense.
Michigan beat the #1, #2 and #3 defenses in the country (as measured by lowest "yards per play") in the last 4 weeks of the season, with their QB injured. I like our chances with a defense that is outside the top 15. "Experts" saying Michigan has not seen a defense as good as Alabama does not mean that they haven't.

@@jky3889 Michigan was not in danger of losing any of those three games. Not even close to "barely beat". As for Iowa, they are then #17 team in the country even though they literally have no offense. Michigan beat them 26-0. AND "Gifted drives" are part of the Michigan game plan. Michigan DBs do give up yards, but they go for picks, not just deflections. They are extremely effective at forcing turnovers.

Mich couldn't gain 300 yds vs MD and won by a TD (Mich run defense was great, though). Penn St game was painful to watch. Mich >> run run run when they probably should have been working on the passing game.
I think this might be a case where the numbers lie especially on the defensive side of the ball because bama had to face the number 1, 8, 9, 15, 17 ranked offenses compared to Michigan who the best offense they faced was Ohio state who is ranked 37th
I don’t care who wins this game, but I can’t believe Klatt is touting Michigan as the number one defense in the country when they’ve played nobody except OSU. As far as offenses go, Alabama has played LSU, Missouri, Tennessee, Ole Miss, TX, and Georgia. Keep in mind Alabama is still 18th in the country in defensive scoring. IMO, Michigan is in trouble. They believe this also as we all saw their reaction to playing Bama. LSU fan here. I hate Bama.
@joelklatt you do so good over the season but really let down when it comes to actually picking teams to win .. guess that only watch full big 10 game bias is kicking in
This is not a good match up for Michigan. Since they are not a passing team think they are going to struggle to get to 20 Points and I think Bama could score up to 30 Points..

Thank you! let them doubt texas!!!. gametime is near and they will just have to prove the doubters wrong.

Washington-alabama will be in the national championship
Joel, with all do respect. I love your show, btw. Your building up this Michigan defense without mentioning that they have played against 8 defenses that rank 100 or above on offense. Michigan is in trouble.
Truth!
Just like Auburn a couple of weeks ago, right? 😄 lol we going to see SEC. Michigan!!
That's fine. Let's keep thinking Bama is who they used to be. Overconfidence will be your undoing. Auburn says hi. You shouldn't even be here.

@@Mikey_Stuntz youre right. Prob like 40-7
I like Washington over Michigan in the natty

Definitely a Michigan vs Washington final

@@SmashTheNumbers LOL at comparing Iowa to Alabama. Iowa is a bunch of white slow farm boys, Bama is down south killers
Really name me any receivers better than Harrison Jr or any of the Ohio State receivers on Alabama team? 🤔
@mattstone8111 no it's not lol 😆

All the pressure is on Michigan. And Alabama has all the momentum after dethroning Georgia. Idk about this one lol

For playing the most difficult schedule of the four remaining teams (5th, some 42 spots ahead of your Big Blue) and for beating the consensus number one team; the reigning back-to-back champion who have gone 1 and 2 against Bama and 40 and 0 against everyone else the past three years??? What has Big Blue done lately? Michigan is probably the most complete team of the 4 but Alabama is the most talented. This Alabama team is relatively weak for a typical Alabama team (but still far superior to most other teams Michigan has played) so is this the year that Saban loses to a 1 seed for the first time as a 4 seed? Key for Michigan; stop Milroe from scrambling when the play breaks down; somehow GA couldn't figure that out late in the game
Everybody has trouble with running quarterbacks. This has been proven time and time again.

Milroe is going to have to have at least 2 or 3 long TD throws for ALA to score 42.
my guess right now would be texas and michigan in the championship game, but i honestly wouldnt be suprised if it was bama washington either. but IMO michigan has just been so dominant, and texas is the most balanced team, but has struggled with consistency.
