    Very funny detail. Coinin (rabbit) sounds very much like the Dutch word 'konijn' for rabbit.

    • @pallasproserpina4118
      @pallasproserpina4118 5 лет назад +6

      Interestingly enough, it looks like the Dutch word was borrowed from the old French “connin”, which was a variant of the old French word “conil”. The Irish word comes directly from the word “conil”, in Anglo-Norman (Norman being essentially a dialect of French at the time). So both the Dutch word and the Irish word essentially come from the old French “conil”

  • @bratschespieler1
    @bratschespieler1 3 года назад +20

    This is a wonderful little song; the singer has a lovely voice and the guitar arrangement and playing is brilliant. But how many would agree with me that, even knowing the words and their meanings, it's very difficult to discern clearly what words the singer is actually singing? Is she perhaps singing in the Munster dialect? A dialect which, in my opinion at least, is the most fluid of all Irish dialects.

    • @tomasdhaithieoghain242
      @tomasdhaithieoghain242 3 года назад +14

      She is from Inis Oírr, one of the Aran Islands, Gaeilge Chonnacht atá aici. The pronunciation in Munster Irish actually is the closest of all dialects to the written Irish. You pronounce the g for example in the verb endings, take -aigh whereas in the other dialects it becomes sort of a schwa. Chuaigh in Connacht Irish would be pronounced something like Chua. Another example would be agat. In Munster people pronounce the g in it, in Connacht Irish it sounds like aad.
