I finally stopped being so tough on myself about my bag collection. I just got to the point where I didn't understand why I, a financially responsible adult who can afford these things, tortured myself over the practicality of my hobby. I accepted that I'm going to wear a bag, at most, a few weeks out of the year. I change my everyday carry weekly, and pick my weekend bags based on my social outings. I love my bags. I have fun styling my outfits around them-and I realized that's justification enough.

Love this! Totally agree with this! I am similar in my rotations. There are some bags like my Chanel jumbo that I’ve only worn 3 times in the last 5 years since getting it but it’s sentimental and beautiful and so expensive to replace so I won’t sell it. Plus I do still love it. I will make a point of carrying it this winter as it’s a bigger bag.

I submitted a Neverfull to Fashionphile for a quote. I currently have two in my collection and during Covid I became a permanent WFH person. I no longer need two of these and I thought with the price increases by LV I might be able to get most of my money back. That has not been the case. I’m riding it out & will get another quote at a later date. My style has definitely changed and bags I was once interested in (for example, the Lady Dior) just don’t work for my lifestyle anymore. There are days I don’t even leave the house 😂. I’m perfectly happy with what I have now.

First, so glad you are back. I used to sell bags go fund other bags. I recently bought the Louis Vuitton Monoglam Speedy and sent my brand new condition, special edition Chanel WOC to Fashionphile for a quote. I told myself I would fund the nee bag with the WOC, which is gorgeous but I rarely use. They offered me $1,500 for a bag I know they would list for $3,000 or more. I kept it. In the end, I do love it. It is worth more than $1,500 to me. I would rather give it to someone I love for free than let go of it to enrich Fashionphile. I'm a thoughtful buyer. I don't have a ton of bags. I love what I have. If I don't have cash, I don't buy. In the end, Im probably not selling anything else.

    • @LuxPurselove

I've sold a few bags that didn't work for me, with no regrets. Although I've ALWAYS lost money on these sales, at least I've recouped something, so it's not just money sitting on the shelf. I don't own any Chanel bags, but if I did, I probably wouldn't let those go right now for all the reasons you stated. One pro you didn't mention is that selling gets you some money for your next bag! Looking forward to your Vegas haul video!

Yes I didn't say in the video but I have always kinda looked at it like I "rented" the bag for a bit. And yes that is a pro! Thank you, hopefully I will have it up soon!

I’ve found I’m happy with my collection, and have no plans to sell anymore. I have about 22 luxury bags, and I’m keeping my contemporary bag collection for my daughter. She’s 13 and uses my Coach bags from time to time. I don’t plan to buy anymore bags either.

Hi there! I for the most part try and live by the rule one out to bring another in. So, I sell one to get another. I tend to buy a lot of pre-loved bags that are in excellent condition or like new. A couple of times a year I treat myself to a brand new bag. I live in Minnesota, so we are limited to the boutiques we can go to to buy in person. A new LV purchased on line never hurt anyone right? My collection really never goes higher than about 14 bags. I just don't need any more than that. Honestly, I'd like to get it down to 10 bags, and try my best to rotate the ones I have. As I get older, I have realized the value in just using these bags and loving them. I no longer want them to sit on a shelf like some monument that I adore. I'm using them, and it's fun! I'd like to think with a little over a dozen really nice bags I have one for ever occasion. Even though I keep my collection small, I still look all the time. I'm in my mid 50's and I'm getting close to figuring out my handbag style I think? Who knows really, but it's fun trying! Love to see you back! I truly missed you and your videos. They have always been very helpful to me!

Glad to have you back! And happy that you got your IG back too! 🎉🎉🎉 I have to catch up on your 1st video back though, will do that! 🙌🏼♥️🥰 The new prices of bags these days are making me not want to buy new, and in the same way, I don’t want to sell because replacing them just cost too much. The marketplace is saturated with lots of preloved right now. It’s not exactly a sell season, it’s better to wait and buy something preloved. ♥️♥️♥️

Loved this discussion and great to see you back ! I feel the same way you do about selling bags. I've sold one mini bag this year because it wasn't functional as it didn't fit my phone. I have about 15 bags, most of them fewer than 3 years old. I've thought about selling a couple of vintage or least used but I wouldn't get much and my 19 year old daughter is interested in them. I have a pink Chanel that doesn't get a lot of use, but it's so pretty and I wouldn't re purchase, so I try to find occasions for her. For the most of part, my bags are not duplicative and are timeless so Im going to try and enjoy and find an occasion to wear them. This will bring me more joy than taking a loss. I would say sell if you are overwhelmed by your collection and don't see yourself using or passing on to your daughter. The right number is different for everyone but 15 including clutches and totes feels right to me- but I could 100% handle 25. 😊

Yesss! We are all so glad to see you! Fashionphile recently low-balled me on a 21A metiers d’art boy bag in excellent condition. It was so shocking and I figured I’m better off keeping my bag than just giving it to them. It would have truly infuriated me to see them selling it for 2 or 3 times what they were going to give me for it. But even if Fashionphile did pay fairly, Chanel prices go up so much that you realize you can never buy the same bag back again for the same lower price you once paid.

I’m soooo glad you’re back in RUclips!!! I’m binge watching all of your recent videos lol. Love your natural curls, you look beautiful. I personally sell items I don’t use if I’m able to get back a decent amount. I’ve been on a selling frenzy and simplifying my life! The last item I sold was a speedy 30 that I bought years ago for under $1000 but didn’t use it because it had no strap so I sold it and bought the same bag with a strap that I wear to work. Also I’ve sold because wearing too much luxury in this bad economy is making me more of a target for thieves. I pretty much only wear the lux bags to work and if I’m out and about I wear my lululemon belt bag.

Great topic! I discovered I enjoy designer bags a lot, but I can be equally happy with contemporary bags, too. In fact, sometimes it feels more comfortable to me to carry contemporary bags. But, as I do love designer bags, too, I have purposely limited those bags to no more than 3 and they are classic and timeless bags. Why? There is a method to my madness 😊 I have 3 daughters. They know my love of handbags. I thought it would be really cool for each of them to have one of their Mom’s designer bags when I leave this earth. A memory of me, if you will. In the meantime, I do carry the designer bags now and then. To enjoy. But, to keep them pristine, I carry my contemporary bags more. I keep my overall “collection” to no more than 10 bags. If my contemporary bag purchases push my collection over 10, I gift away. My contemporary bags are all Coach from the 1941 line. Quality bags. So, in summary I no longer sell. Too stressful. And, you lose money. So, I just keep my bag purchases reigned in. 😊

Great topic Melinda, excellent points you brought up too.
I think if a bag no longer brings you joy ; sell it. It’s just money sitting on the shelf. I also feel it’s important for people to know that’s it’s not realistic to recoup all your money on a “ used” bag. If that’s the case then purchase it brand new from the boutique . I’ve lost money on selling bags but I don’t have any regrets because bags need to be used and loved not just sit on a shelf.
You’ve made us all wiser about both purchasing and selling . Thanks for mentioning me 😊❤

So nice to have you back on RUclips Melinda. Welcome back to the club 🤩 Selling of handbags eh...of late i wanted to sell one of my LV canvas handbag to a 2nd hand consigner but the price sucks before the price increased but i doubt i will get any better even after the price increase. Moreover the handbag i had just used it once or twice. After getting the quote if i were to sell (this is just 2 months ago), i told myself, that is fine, i will just keep it and used it. I am adding some handbags in my collection but i am even more caution and selective now after knowing what works and what did not work for me. Anyway, i just have a handful of luxury handbags (less than 10 in total) so thus i do not mind keeping that. Yeah, i do not want to regret it too and the price has increased so much since i purchased it 3 years ago. I think the 2nd hand consigner are having difficulty in selling off the handbags too given the economy situation, even their prices are cheaper than the boutique, i mean even for Chanel Classic that is new with stickers and chip, i see their prices are cheaper than in the boutique. Ok that is for Chanel, but certainly not Hermes. Thus they do not want to take in more i guess. Thanks for sharing 🤗

This was such an interesting video Melinda. I went through a period of buying and selling for about 3-4 years because I didn’t know how the bag would work in my collection until I owned it even after doing research. Now I return them right away if it’s not right. The last bag I sold was an Hermes bag 1.5 years years ago. I’m at 24 designer bags now plus some contemporary and some Lululemon casual ones and I really try to rotate. I don’t want to sell for the time being because I’ve lost so much money selling and I would rather just try to use what I have. I don’t have children so when I do feel like letting any go I one day, as I agree that it’s money on a shelf, I will go to a local consignment store, or to close friends who have bought my bags, as I can’t imagine shipping my bag off to a stranger and worrying about it. Love having you back on here for these great chats 😘

Interesting topic and I feel the same sentiment. I’ve bought and sold a lot over the last 2-3 years. It’s such a frustrating and stressful process. This year I have not sold anything, I finally got my collection(12 bags) to a number that I am comfortable that all will get some love from me. That said, I have not really been purchasing like I have in the past. I’m following the one in and one out rule. And currently I love all my bags and don’t want to let any of them go. So for now I just shop my closet and admire from afar. Thanks for the video!!

I realized that I neglected to mention a response to your question in the video. I have found that since the pandemic, I am naturally open to downsizing. I was fortunate to do a lot of this during the early part of the pandemic and the sell pricing was better. Things have definitely gotten worse and Fashionphile which had been my go to in a lot of cases is not very good right now. I don't have Chanel - mostly LV and Lanvin. I am ready to part with some others but won't sell for these ridiculous prices. I did sell a few bags and SLG's on eBay and did well but a bit of nail biting if people would be honest, etc. I am holding off anything further and hoping things improve. I also am down quite a bit and feel really good about this. I've donated some bags that don't have resale value as they aren't "luxury" and felt good about that. A lot of what went into my decision to part with bags was that I no longer go to business and need to carry a large bag. I am enjoying my crossbody bags and smaller sized bags. Thx for the video!

Hi Melinda! Great to see you!
I am having a bit of an issue with storage space so I’m trying to be a bit more mindful with my handbag purchases this year, although I do have a few pieces on my radar, mostly Hermes and Loewe. In my current collection, I’d say my Chanel Jumbo is probably in the same situation as your Boy Bag. The Jumbo is so heavy, I wish I’d bought the regular size instead (10 years ago). Now I can’t bear to spend that kind of money on a Classic Flap so I’m just hanging on to my Jumbo for that reason.
I may just try to get rid of a couple of contemporary and “unbranded” bags just to clear some space.

    • @LuxPurselove

Good to see you too Corrine! The jumbo is so heavy and the medium is a little too small. I have a complaint with all of the Chanel ones lol but no way would I part with those classics! Good idea to clear out some other brands.

I never sold any bags and don't attend to. I have something like 15 luxury bags which is a small collection and I never regret any purchases. All of them have a purpose and I was mindfull about my choices. I know I will still wear them ten years from now. Maybe if it wasn't the case I would have sell some. Also, it feels like a huge step I'm not willing to take to get rid of a bag in a perfect condition for the fraction of the price I bought it. So clearly, I would be bother to sell nowadays and lose that much money if it's not necessary. I never was attracted by the idea of resselling all the time bags and clothing so I can have a brand new collection. Every piece I own has its story and is meaningful to me. It's not the same journey as someone who's into trend with a more detached look about fashion.

So glad to see you back on YT! While I haven't bought anything lately from Fashionphile, I can see how the prices are significantly less than a year ago. So much so that I'm thinking of picking up an Hermes Birkin. I've been working with an SA for the past three years and have not been offered one despite what I consider quite few purchases through her. At this point, I can justify the somewhat higher than retail price instead of continuing to buy and hope to finally get an offer. Any thoughts on being a buyer in this downturn market?

Girl, I sold so many bags last year. I had too many just sitting on my shelf, or just really not giving me the value for what I paid. I do have several bags that I don't use a ton - a Chanel boy, an LV white multicolor (lord, I love that bag even if everyone thinks they're gaudy), and some others - that I'll never get rid of because I just love them so much. When I use them, they make me happy. The other bags I sold, not so much. Fashionphile and TRR gave me absolutely abysmal offers...like, the worst. I did sell some Hermes pieces to them, I guess they just hold their value better for that market. I ended up selling the rest on Poshmark and Mercari with great results. In all cases, I got close to or more than what I paid, other than the Hermes pieces - I took a hit on those. (Also, I'm so glad you're back!)

In future years I MAY a purchase a tote, not sure. Meanwhile I have probably 35 contemporary/vintage bags from Coach, Dooney & Bourke, Kate Spade (gateway obsession) collected over 25 years. I have always kept them because I won't get much money selling and I do pull them out occasionally. Now that I am hitting bag overload I wonder if I should try to sell the contemporary/vintage group and if so how to do it in the easiest manner....I will probably just think about it for the next 3 years honestly unless some easy method crosses my path!

And I fell MADLY IN LOVE.
So then I went on a frenzy of buying luxury handbags. I NEVER thought I would sell a bag, but I got to the point that I could not justify buying another bag if I didn’t let one go. And the hunt and purchase is definitely a big part of the fun for me. So I have actually ended up selling quite a few the past few years. Do I have regrets? ABSOLUTELY, but I realize that I can’t justify 40 Chanel bags. But I think I am at a good place now with all my treasures (bags) - I have a wonderfully curated collection at this point. If I sell and regret it I will never be able to get it back because prices are insane. So, in the shelf they stay, neatly stuffed and packed in their dust bags. I don't really have a set number or fixed rule on what stays and goes otherwise. I do like to have a purpose for every bag and avoid repeats. I never bought into that bags are investments. If I buy a bag, and decide to sell down the road, i never think of making a return on investment, I am just selling it for market price and moving on. To me bags are not an investment, they are something I buy to use and then if I can recoup some money great, but I am not looking to get close to the money I paid. I have bought some bags over the years that have turned out not to work for me, but that is my learning lesson, I take the lose, move on, and remember what I learned. Now I try to watch all videos before making a purchase, when the bag arrives i usually sit on it for a week, walk around the house with it, see if my items fit into it and my gut tells me yes or no. Bags are not an investment, we need to understand that, I cringe when I hear a youtuber call them investments.

I think you should sell your bags if you are not using them. For me, it’s more for sustainability reason and also to free up space.

I have plenty of space, that isn't an issue. I am not sure what sustainable reason there would be to sell a bag?

@@LuxPurselove I mean, if I am not using a bag and someone else has better use then just sell to them. So they don’t buy a brand new one. Some people would rather buy and reuse ♻️ instead of buying brand new. Save the earth 🌏

Fashionphile and Yoogi's Closet used to be my go to places but now Fashionphile give low low buyout quotes and Yoogies says try again in 30-60 days... so I don't know anymore but I have heard to stay far away from Rebag

eBay used to be a good place to sell, I am not sure now. Also there are some Facebook groups but I don't have that so I can't recommend which group.
