- George Clarke advises two accountants as they quit their jobs and set off to renovate a 200-year-old barn in Devon. Husband Martin was supposed to be project manager, but having to work out his notice meant wife Clare taking over the job, and she now seems reluctant to relinquish control. Construction progresses smoothly, but George is horrified by plans to remove the property's original features.
Presented by architectural designer Charlie Luxton, Build A New Life follows people leaving the rat-race of the city in pursuit of new lifestyles and new homes in the countryside. The dream houses they are creating are inspiring, architecturally challenging and are all undertaken with a modest budget.

I got to 27:30 and had to stop watching them ruin this cool old building. Red ceilings? and throwing out all the old timbers? What a farce.
me tooo! I'm out.
@@Johanjg2 I just got to the red ceilings and thought can this get worse? Checked the comments and I'm out too. I can understand hubby going back to work early now.
I made a great living renovating and saving Victorian buildings. What happened to this poor building is criminal. Save it! Don't destroy it!
I am happy that they did not touch outside structure! :)
Thanks for the warning. Hard Pass!
Had to stop at 17:30. The way this woman is treating her husband is shameful. Its her home not his.
It’s the first time I’ve ever given one of George’s shows a thumbs down
That’s why hubby went back to work and even drove the distance. She not a designer I would like to hire. Foods cold by the time it gets to the table downstairs. Definitely not practical for any age.
Ashame all those old beams went up in smoke. They could easily have been repurposed into the house or some other structure on site. If not, sell or give them away to someone else who could do wonders with them.
I TOTTALY agree. And the kitchen & dinning room are in the wrong place.
@@stilcrazychris That is my opinion, as well. That vaulted dining room would have made an awesome kitchen/informal dining room as the artery of the house. A formal dining room (if necessary) together with the living room would have worked better together upstairs. I hope they are happy with the layout..
Old buildings should be protected against people like these... Strange country, sometimes there are ridiculous demands for restoring (listed buildings, that sometimes rather are left to become ruins), while on the other hand buildings the one in this episode are totally "f*cked up!
The whole time I kept thinking my gawd at least cover the new beams with the old wood! And who in their RIGHT MIND wud plaster those walls!!?? That poor man clearly has no problem being trampled on by his overbearing wife. Maybe he went back to work to get away from her. Can you imagine what a disaster she wud have been to him if he had put his foot down and objected to her horrendous taste/decisions!? Gross.
The-River it’s his own fault because he puts up with her
The floor plan is horrible. One of the first things to consider is the route of groceries into the home. The second is when you get older and having the potential of all the basics on the first floor I.e. kitchen, bathroom and bedroom.
She seems like a grown up spoiled brat that pushes her way. Too bad. She has disrespected the character of the original building. And she has a terrible sense of style. Just because you spend oodles of money, does not mean you have taste.
Sad to watch.
NOW I can see why the societies in Britain who are responsible for regulating how these old buildings are renovated are SO HARSH. Because if they aren't then these buildings get gutted of all their beautiful timber, have FOIL put on for insulation, and I swear I saw them literally throwing the old roof tiles into a skip rather than repurposing them for another project. So wasteful! I'll never complain about how strictly the historical Councils control what can happen to listed buildings again if this is what happens to the unlisted ones!
But what happens to the listed ones? They sit there and rot, because nobody can afford the ridiculous and frankly capricious mandates of the societies. You can't win.
@@LadyIarConnacht I've heard that if no one buys a building that the society lists that the society themselves are responsible for the conservation of it. I've heard of this actually happening a grand total of one time. My guess is the rise in popularity of 'flip this ancient building into a modern home' style shows in the UK is fully backed by the society in order to get the population interested in doing the financial part of saving these homes. I imagine it's a delicate balance of "list this home" vs "pay to fix it.
@@WayToVibe they maintain it but on a priority and budget basis. The explosion in listing every single 200 yo bit of ruin doesn't help and The Cost or skilled labor and especially the high administrative overheads makes any rescue prohibitive even for the regulators.
"I married a gargoyle" at 11:20. Has this series devolved into reality TV? Regardless of what I think or feel about the couple, I'm ashamed and embarrassed for everyone who let this be aired.
Then she states "we cud put your head on the end of the bed"...wth!
Awesome results on some things
But Clare was a COMPLETE washout, princess, bully and overall spoiled brat.
She emasculated her husband. I wasn't impressed with her spoiled brat attitude. All that BS of everything having to be her way is ridiculous.
Her layout made absolutely zero sense. It wasn't well thought out at all.
As for carrying groceries in she'll probably bully her husband into doing it.
I found it quite telling that she listed her horses above her family. Whereas he put family first.
Jennie Conrad, The only thing I can add to your comment, I feel sorry for her husband.
I wonder if she is reading the comments?
WELL SAID!!! BRAVO!!!
I only could barely watch 15 minutes of her nonsense. She is a selfish witch!!!!! ⬛
She is so unilateral that she will probably end up alone, if her husband ever gets the courage to escape from her. Hearing her say "I married a gargoyle" really upset me. One wonders who is paying for all that?
Divorce
Clare.. beyond annoying.. If I was married to that, I'd opt out to see her once a week.. Even that would be too much..
Beautiful from the outside! The inside however shows a complete lack of taste and respect for an old building.
Total waste of space and poorly designed interior.
They love it! That is all that matters... :)
@@onedandylion they don't love it, even she isn't satisfied, but she got what she wanted, and I think for her that was all that really mattered. Glad I ain't married to her.
onedandylion
Yes you are right.
People say really mean stuff.
Why did these 2 ever get hitched ?? Appears they live seperate lives. 'So what did you get out of the build Martin ? ' Answer: 'Nothing'.
Zero input, zero choice & zero character
She is bossy, over bearing and he has no input into the build. She laughs at the end of a sentence often because she feels it justifies her comments.I only hope she is worth it to him but I doubt it.If she was mine,I would belt her one.....Just saying.
Women scream "abuse" and "divorce" when it happens to them. But after all this is a woman's program and they all find it amusing the way she treats her husband. They like that.
@@eskimoglenn lol!!!!!
That place had so much potential. Until claire got there. 😂
Oh dear.... not sympathetically restored or logically designed, at all ! A shame for future generations.
Agree the kitchen is in the wrong place! It’s hidden upstairs at the end with no outdoor access; it’s not the heart of the house like it should be.
Which tells you something about this family.
@@thecollector5243 Touche'
because there is no heart in the house.
A bossy woman with horses! RUN......RUN!!!!
Bossiness & horses seem to go together
I have no problem with her being bossy but if the character behind the bossiness is also selfish and a Bit nasty that should make you run for the hills.
Oh Martin.....you can still have a happy life. Clare....may you never run another project again! What a dislikable human being.
Where’s the conservation officer to stop her ripping out those gorgeous beams? Martin needs to grow a pair to stop this awful woman making him look like a complete under the thumb husband. Covering up those lovely walls with plaster... madness!
This barn is not listed. It is private property.
M.R. It can still be private property and listed! But that’s neither here nor there! She was a spoilt brat!
This was so hard to watch, I went to school to learn to restore a listed building and I have been saving and selling off assets to be able to move to the U.K. to be near family I have not seen in years and then have to watch a most beautiful barn be butchered by an amateur. bar far the worst design I have ever seen. :(
My heart ached watching this.. such a shame to do this to a beautiful stone old girl :(
DISGUSTINGLY THE WORST!!!! ⬛
Not a fan of her not keeping the character of the building.
I can’t believe that all the barn wood was burned. I would have loved to see that wood stay and be part of the final project. This family would have been better off buying a new build
totally agree. i cringed when i saw the wood going up in smoke.
Kitchen is upstairs in a corner, the 'grand dining room' is downstairs!! (in a corner) grand? Sofa with back to fireplace, bathroom with grand window. Hideous.
yes! so many disasters. The bathroom window??? what was she thinking, honestly? I got the impression she is someone who would never admit she is wrong. I loved the exterior but the interior was a complete disaster. I hope she is reminded every time she carries her groceries to the kitchen... or perhaps hubby has to do that.
@@user-qf7np4br4f haha probably she seems to be in charge of everything with him just doing as he's told 😅
@@benmac940 hysterical to say the least! as long as she is happy.... that seemed to be the main thing ;)
She obviously isn't doing the shopping or cooking, and won't be serving any food to the dining room.
@L. What she wants isn't the main thing. Apparently, what she wants - usually a poor choice - is the Only thing that matters.
An unsympathetic and unpleasant conversion, done by an unsympathetic and unpleasant woman. I can imagine the husband has to live in an out building.
He would demand to live in his own tree house!
Shame about the fireplace, YUK. The stone wall is the best bit. Red ceiling is unfortunate as well. Too bad they covered up almost ALL the brick/stone work. **SIGH**
"They" didn't do anything...."she" did it all.
yes i agree it is a real shocker. why oh why put that into the house. The floor is out of place as well. what was this woman thinking.
Wow! I don’t know what to say... some really bad design choices. All the charm and character is gone. If this house went on the market, it would be a tough sale with its current layout. Totally flabbergasted by this one.
Well at least the build matches the personality of the wife - charmless and characterless!
I like a lot of the design choices but the layout just doesn't work for me, and as others have said what a waste of that beautiful old timber just burning it all.
All the wife's doing, and all she does is just wrong. Claire's poor husband and son! I wonder how her personality and disrespect for her husband will affect her son in the future. It's one thing her ruining a building, but the harm to her son? I shudder to think.
Sold within a month of being on the market and for £1.8 million…
39:40 - Claire allowed Martin to answer the door...
hahaha
Brilliant! Even the presenter had noticed what a cow she is
Too funny!
Why waste all that time? She could've got a wrecking ball and accomplished the same result. Incredibly horrible taste.
Not much I want to say about this massacre other than they had a great builder and pencil pushers should stay at the office. Sad.
Can't stand that European kiss, kiss thing. I'm glad we don't have to kiss people we don't like here other than sometimes having to kiss the boss's behind.
"What do you think you've got out of this, Martin?" Martin crosses his arms and gets defensive. All is not well.
Clare is a total control freak, quite unpleasant!
I had such high hopes for this one. So sad how it all ended. They destroyed it. And, unless they are multi millionaires, someone still has to work. Why did they even bother to do this if they were just going to destroy it?
I'm surprised that the issue of building egress hasn't been addressed re the kitchen being at the far end of the building with no doorway. A kitchen fire could trap people.
That wouldn't be so bad if it were just this couple. Time to clean out the gene pool.
I wonder whether that couple still is together. I would have divorced her quite quickly!
She has killed the character of the bar completely, the layout doesn´t make any sense at all.
I guess she had been better of converting an old industrial building.
I cried when old stone pillars hit the ground!!!!!
That fireplace... oof
hideous
Makes me sick to see the great beams turn down and burned. Shameful.
Her taste is atrocious.
This is a herendous house... no style,no elegance...just a cheap kitche..
The first thing they should have done before they did anything else would have been to cut that woman's tongue out .
Lol!
Nice staircase for the "Grand Dining Hall" that you need to use to walk up and down, in order to walk to the other end of the house to bring the food down from the kitchen. The layout design is dreadful
This was hard to stomach, so much potential squandered. My negative impression of the building was only compounded by her intolerable arrogance and self-satisfied quips. Gross.
Poor husband!! Not got a voice at all. Will he even be allowed to live there? I lasted to 14:50 and could take no more of the sharp voice.
Or maybe he asked not to talk too much as he has a stutter and struggles?!
We are in quarentine in Brazil, Covid-19, so this show is just saving me... regards,❤.
The host of this show should do audiobooks. And there is something to be said for the British and their way of showing they are at least a bit salty about someone ruining an old building. The light shade they keep throwing at Clair by constantly pointing out that it's the head contractor who is helping her make decisions and NOT her husband is a nod to subtlety.
*What? No mirrors on the ceiling in the bedroom? I expected more from you Clare ...*
kkkkkk
Its very "Clare" who wears the trousers in this family!!!!
Oh, so it? (sarcasm)
What a freak of nature!
Spoiled brat!!!
money can not buy taste....
I can't even watch this. The wife is awful!
This woman has no taste or sense of design at all.
I accidentally ran across this series. I have watched every Restoration Man Video on RUclips. I am delighted to find Build A New Life in the Country. Thank You I enjoy the restoration projects.
George Clark has such a pleasant voice.
This woman is a guys worse nightmare come true!
I really wonder why he picked her. I mean she didn't drug him or held his grandma hostage to force him to marry her. Makes you wonder about him, too.
Makes me wonder how people are so dumb to not realise things are exaggerated for tv!
Why is it so often, people with so much money and no taste get handed these beautiful old buildings to ruin? I don’t understand it.
Just gotta wonder why they built such an epic dining room and they shoved a tiny table and chairs under the stairs. And so many other abominations that people have already mentioned.
I think about the only thing that they have done that’s worthy of the old barn is the flooring. Even the kitchen looks odd and like an afterthought.
Just watched the whole thing going noooooo!!!! 😱😱😱
Not well designed at all. Very cold interior and layout is ridiculous.
"The barn itself was a gift from Clare's parents....which is nice...." hahah! Love the outside. Not the inside so much.
I can understand very clearly why her husband went back to work after only one month. I would have gone after probably one week!
Beautiful structure, exterior and great crew. I’m so sad that they didn’t use an architect or a designer. So many competing looks, textures and loss of character in the interior.
Well, she's not a romantic like most of these owners, but the project was done on time and under budget. That's an accomplishment you don't often see on this show.
This is the 1st time I've seen George not like 99.99% of the restoration
George summed it up. A city house in the country. Best character was the builder, a salt of the earth sensible bloke.
And this is why they have Heritage listings and rigorous hoops to jump through
I like Claire’s decisiveness. Noticed that some commenters made harsh comments about her when her decisiveness was the reason the project went so smoothly. Cheers to her husband for listening to her creative assessments. I think she was confident and brilliant.
janine Chase-Russel
I'm a fella and honestly didn't have any big problem with her. I didn't like her layout and would have exposed more brick but she seemed happy with it.
there is something to be said for decisiveness.
OK house, but I kinda hate the wife. What an over empowered, spoiled brat....... And her horse comes before her family..... smh
I can't hate her, because she's decisive and got the build done on time and under budget - but I hate her decorating choices.
Beautiful inside and out. The original wall packs a punch and the plastered walls provide a lightness and modern practical clean look. Well done to the couple. Just because you are given a barn doesn’t mean it has to remain looking like a barn; it’s important to have features you like.
It would be so nice if the producers went back to those homes & showed the viewers how the homes look like now
Why didn't the crazy women just build a new house? Why cover all those beautiful walls over.
Horrid to call her husband a gargoyle. He seems a wonderful chap to me-to put up with her. May not work too well when he is home all the time.
I have to agree with everyone here, this was criminal. She butchered this beautiful ban beyond recognition. Thankfully it wasn't a listed building.
Great series, yes
Claire seems like a spoiled brat. A real control freak.
Such a lovely kept man. She needs some education on design and how to be open to better ideas plus respecting the history.
The archetype of an accounts manager from Slough, that one
It’s still a nice home that’s been built well no matter what our views on taste. This homes journey has only just begun.
what a terrible person, she reminds me of my aunt.
@deer hunter are you the lady from the show?
@@atodaso1668 hahahaha
Everyone thinks they want "AS SIMPLE LIFE IN THE COUNTRY" but they do not realize just how much hard physical labor it takes to iive in the country. We move to rural Michigan 5- acre property in 2000 and found ourself working 24/7 on home remodel, lawn mowing, leaf pick up, snow blowing 7 months of the year, planting and maintaining the gardens, mowing the meadow, taking care of chickens (winterizing the coop every fall for the upcoming winter) and of course the roof, the animals, the dogs, sealing the driveway, fixing the broken and the old. We did this work for 20 years and then we got to old and infirm and had to leave our home pole born, my business, my husband's blacksmith forge etc. We had to drive and hour to an hour and a half for groceries, shoes, doctors, and everything else we needed. This kind of living is for the young and healthy!! Sorry Claire but I don't care for the purple paint in the kitchen.
Not everyone has the opportunity to be so lucky as to be given such a cool building like this to fulfill their dream home. The outside looks stunningly beautiful yet personally would've gotten a couple suggestions from designers of what would be the best route to take in designing such a beautiful old barn like this. It tore me apart to see these old beams torn out of the old building. nevertheless they did have considerable rot that couldn't of been used. It was smart of them to have planned much of what they all wanted ahead of time. Covering up those old beams for the ceiling is an absolute shame. It would've looked much more nicer in my opinion keeping that old rustic look instead of the modern city looking touch, kind of takes away from the potential of what it could've been, but, the bottom line its their home not mind.
In the Living Room, maybe consider a Pivoting Bookshelf-TV Unit somewhere that can Pivot towards the Fireplace or elsewhere...nice Job..I like the slate and windows...warm flooring...Great
Wait, They put the kitchen upstairs? And also where the heck do they keep their food there was not much storage
I stayed till the end to see how monstrous Claire made hr house.
So sad to see the walls covered, and the red ceiling is hideous. I find very little in this rebuild I like.
What an awful woman..bossy unflexable and as previous posters have said red ceilings and burning all that timber..jeez
Oh my gosh, all that lovely timber that could have been reused. They have absolutely no idea. Solo sad. And clueless.
Wow, how not to design a layout, how not to renovate an old building, how not to furnish a room, and how not to be married, all in one episode.
People are getting really too personal in the comments here. I disagree with some of her design decisions too (particularly that red ceiling and large bathroom windows)--but that doesn't make her an awful person. She still managed the project well, kept things moving, came in UNDERBUDGET and how often does that happen?! While the end result isn't my cup of tea, it's her house and as long as she's happy there then it was successful.
What a bossy woman. Martin was taking 6 months off to be a project manager & she had already made the decisions without him being in the loop. Couldn't watch the whole show, so skipped to where the place was finished. I said place because that is not really a home. It is very sterile & has no warmth. I noticed at 43:41 that her horses came before her family.
I guess the barn wasn't listed as a historic monument. Oversight for design permissions might have made her head explode.
I am so surprised that Claire changed the original beauty of the building in the open area. All those beautiful pieces of oak, the stone walls plastered over, and the stone pillars taken out seem sad to me. Although the home is nice with the inside stone wall. Torrarsa is right about Claire and I could not live with her if I were a fella. All I can say is kudos to Martin.
Hear hear! Absolutely correct. Why bother to renovate if you destroy what's there. Build a new house!
Great planned holiday let for when she gets handed the original farm house!
Being gifted the land and building helped her stay under budget
Wow, that's one whipped husband... Shame with all the original beautiful features inside, but she certainly got what she wanted...
Wonder if the husband hung around after the build? Or did he finally get a voice?
Absolutely hideous! What a train wreck of a project! This lady belongs in the nut hut! When a structure is this old there should be rules about what one can do!
What is the roof insulation material
The decision making and consultation process seemed a lot one sided. She said “I used to drag you out to look…” That says a lot! He did not look comfortable and looked like someone in a hostage video towards the end of the show 😬
Clare’s single minded determination resulted in a house that just didn’t flow, but it was her vision 👀
The house did not flow and just didn’t make sense in many areas, probably one of the worst designs I’ve ever seen.
Are they still living there? 🤔
So kitchen upstairs and dinning table downstairs🤔? Ye, that will work😂
Interesting. Crazy horse people are an international phenomenon apparently lol
Getting the food from the kitchen to the dining room, it would be cold before it got there. It will be the biggest entrance way ever.
Being in the construction industry I can inform people that having a chatty opinionated woman like this running the project everything turns chaotic and upside down and a mess by the end. All the history and charm is gone because everything had to be done "her way" in "her house." The husband would be far better off getting rid of her and the house, she ruined it anyway.
This is a disaster. A self-centered person doing engineering she knows nothing about, architecture she doesn't understand, and design at which she is awful. Absolutely awful. She sure didn't think things through AT ALL.
At least it's beautiful on the outside.. :/
Clare obviously is not into cooking so she don`t care where kitchen will be. They or better said, she, ruined those great old buildings.
I don’t usually care but would love to know about the house and couple now 16 years later. Anybody know?
Sold in 2020 for 1.8 million. Martin and Clare are still very much in love and their Son isn’t messed up from Clare (who isn’t like they depict, it’s almost as if it’s tv and needs drama 😱)
It shows when there is a captain on the Ship..nice decisive lady who did her share of Introspection to make lucid material choices..
Andre EWERT
to be honest with you, I coups have done with being half as decisive in my life, and failing that would have benefited from a woman like her.
