I grew up on the border and I am so happy to see this. Mariachi was a regular part of our city! These students work so hard and their brilliant performances show their brilliance! Those costumes take hundreds of hours to construct. I am so happy for these students.
I grew up in the Midwest...when I was a kid in the 60's my dad use to take us this restaurant that had a GREAT Mariachi band ! They didn't roam from table to table, they played on a stage and people watched... I fell in love with the music then (4 or 5 yrs old) and I still love it... It's a great kind of music to see live....!
My Mother loved Mariachi music and we learned to love it too! My sisters would serenade her on her birthday by hiring a local Mariachi band to play "Las Mananitas" which is the traditional birthday song and is a wonderful tribute to Moms. We hired a Mariachi band to play at her funeral service and it brought tears to our eyes as we said "Adios madrecita linda" to my Mom. Thank you Linda Ronstandt for your beautiful music and thank you Ramona for sharing this story. PS and a shout out to the Mariachis in Edinburg Texas for keeping the music alive!
Ronstadt's "Canciones de mi Padre" was a breathtaking landmark album - the live shows even better. Many schools and youth programs now teach this gorgeous music. Beautiful people. Beautiful music.
What a wonderful competition for these students to take part in that celebrates Mariachi music. I hope this event will become a tradition each year for high school students in Texas. Perhaps other states could look into starting annual competitions likes this of folkloric music that the state is known for.
I was thinking the exact same thing, BC, e.g. how wonderful it is for Texas to do this (and I was surprised, actually, that this is BRAND NEW to the state) and if other states would do this. HS polka bands in Wisconsin?
I'm American born, and American raised. I love mariachi music and these students and their music directors have done so much to bring it to the public with lots of professionalism. You can see and hear how hard they work. Thanks to RUclips we get to hear these wonderful musicians and singers.
Bred and born in Texas. Can’t speak a lick of Spanish. I’ve love mariachi since I was a kid. Nobody hates Mexico. Nearly all Texas loves the Mexican culture that’s part of Texas. Especially mariachi. It put a smile on everyone faces
There are Aztec versions of some of the old songs and the dancing is also straight Aztec now with lots of close on and Spanish shoes...but the colors that's FIRST NATIONS Aztec too

I agree. I'm a descendant of Mexican Americans from South Texas, and I don't like that they had to relate what the kids are doing to the border and illegal immigrants. I understand that those are hot political issues in these areas. However, I think it neglects that most of these kids are probably 3-5 generations removed from immigration and some might not even speak Spanish outside of the songs they're singing. It's a complex dynamic, and I can't speak for them, only for my own experience. Mexican history is part of Texas history, so the lines in South Texas are blurred between culture that is distinctly Mexican and distinctly Texan.
When I heard (mariachis) out of my state jalisco anything sounds similar ... Its like eat mexican food in other country ... No flavor everything different ...... MARIACHIS IS FROM JALISCO ... . THE OTHERS ARE JUST COPY AND IMOTATION WITHOUT THAT SOECIAL TOUCH
You gotta be kidding me. Gee, I wonder why CBS suddenly cares about Mariachi competitions in Texas? You people are as see through as spring water. Youre as subtle as a gallstone.
*I don't get it either. Corridos is even worse, but I'm happy for them to be able to pursue their music and cultural traditions. It definitely should count as a high school credit*
I believe the answer to your question why is because they are performing mariachi music. I’m sure if you wanted high school band competitions that play those songs you could find them.
How do you know the anthem wasn't played? Or any other American song? If this video was your only exposure to the competition, you don't know what else was played, or not.
Iseeuandwatch79.....It's not a football/basketball/baseball/ect. game....it's a band competition.... When I played in the High School Orchestra, we went to state competitions and they didn't play the national anthem before it started. It's not an athletic event....
Mr. Sorry but, The Mariachi & The Mexican Music, born BEFORE than the jazz😂 and the trumpets were used BEFORE jazz born. The instruments was Taken from The INFLUENCE from the Camera, Clasical, Opera, Tradicional and Popular music what came whith the INMIGRANTS, from Spanish, France, Germany, Austria, Ireland,Italia. And has envolved to date. And You Forgot this. MARIACHI is the name of the MUSIC SET. GALA CHARRO COSTUME is the clothing used BY RICHS Landovers during the COLONIAL ERA in MÉXICO. And IT WAS NOT INSPIRED by the Spanish colonizers. AND THE MUSIC NAME IS MEXICAN MUSIC RANCHERA MUSIC (the later is because it has an origin in the RANCHES and Landovers from the colonial era to date. And ALL this HERITAGE included the states that today are part of the southern united states.

Ronstadt brought Mariachi appreciation to me and millions. Great players and great singers.
Linda Ronstadt made me a lover of Mariachi.
*Mariachi music is the most complex music I have ever played as a trumpet player. 🎺*
*Pure artistic spirit through sound. 💗*

I love Mariachi music! There is also the Mariachi Vargas competition each December here in San Antonio Texas.

Those Canciones shows with Linda were terrific. Quite a musical ride.
What a great, musical cultural addition to this beautiful tapestry we call America!
Congratulations to all who compete, and add to the joy of music in the world. 😎

Oh how I love this music! These artists are also a feast for the eyes! Their outfits are spectacular!!
I attended this last year and could not believe the level of talent! Can’t wait to go back this year. 💕
How do you not embrace this culture. It's fantastic.

What a disrespectful thing to say about Mexico and politics. Have respect for their culture and tradition. It is beautiful!
So proud of these kids! Amazing talent.
How can you not love mariachi? I love this!
Remember Carlos Santana? His father was a mariachi violinist playing in bars in San Francisco in the 60s and 70s.
Such beautiful music. Amazing talented young people!
Beautiful culture and amazing costumes

There are Aztec versions of some of the old songs and the dancing is also straight Aztec now with lots of close on and Spanish shoes...but the colors that's FIRST NATIONS Aztec too
Correct me if I am wrong but I always thought the accordion was introduced to Mexico when Maximilian I (an Austrian) assumed the throne in the 1860's

Accordion “probably” borrowed from Germany? 🤦🏽♀️

"Today, high school students across Texas practice this form of folkloric music that transcends the U.S.-Mexico border."
*OH SHUT UP*
Why? I don't like their music, but a little music competition isn't hurting anyone. They aren't forcing anyone else to participate
Marachi is Mexican why is he saying that is American?🤦🏽♂️
You gotta be kidding me. Gee, I wonder why CBS suddenly cares about Mariachi competitions in Texas? You people are as see through as spring water. Youre as subtle as a gallstone.
Looks like SOMEBODY has forgotten the Alamo. Traitors.
Oh shut up already
I wonder if trump approves of this?
it's rumored he has a private mariachi band
I live on the border and grew up surrounded by this music...still, I don't care for it.
*I don't get it either. Corridos is even worse, but I'm happy for them to be able to pursue their music and cultural traditions. It definitely should count as a high school credit*
Cool story, bro.
No national anthem, no America the Beautiful.. why?
