Loved this video, Andrew. You should do it again with 2022 numbers (they are already available and easily found) but then compare the 2018 numbers to the 2022 numbers, and talk about which ones are going in the "right direction". Might be fun if you put together your own spreadsheet with arrows on it and a column for each year. Maybe look at 3 different crime stats (homicide, burglary, rape).
Being born and having grown up in Medellín/Colombia in the 80’s and 90’s with Pablo Escobar and all that (back when it was the most dangerous city on the planet) as a kid/teenager I kind of started finding it normal to be in constant danger of shootings, kidnappings, robberies, car bombs, etc, at some point it all becomes as normal as breathing. Fast forward 20 years living in the boring/peaceful Netherlands, it’s kind of insane to think I used to find all of that normal, I’m glad about the insane safety levels of my life these days. It’s also weird though that every time I travel back to Colombia my mind instantly switches back to that “used to danger” mode and finding it normal.
It's not just murder, in Indonesia, Cambodia,m Vietnam, and especially Thailand your chances of dying in a traffic accident far exceed that of being murdered in the United States. In Thailand, driving is so insane and childish that it affects the quality of life. Accidents from shoddy electric work and construction are also common here. The heat in Southeast Asia is unbearable, especially around April, 40 Celsius with 60% humidity.
I was actually thinking of eventually moving to Asia, but heat is a big issue for me,I'd look for a country where its cheap to live, cold weather, good internet connection because thats how I make my living
@Oki Bangkok is the warmest city in the World. Phoenix actually gets hotter at times but it cools at night and certain times of the year. Bangkok seldom goes below 80 even at night and almost never below 70. The humidity is unbearable. Your air conditioner takes on the importance of a Heater in Alaska. I’ve lived now in Mexico for about 4 years in Puerto Vallarta, San Cristobal de Las Casas and Oaxaca City and in that time I’ve never once felt unsafe. I’ve gotten so relaxed that when I’m shopping and I put my wallet down on the counter I don’t worry about it, I probably shouldn’t do that, but so far thankfully nothing bad has happened. And I walk everywhere except for the occasional bus ride or taxi to and from the airport when traveling, but I enjoy walking and the cityscapes are so delightful I prefer being able to see my surroundings. I used to live in Chicago and New Orleans as points of comparison. Moving to Mexico has been a wonderful success and a delightful change of pace!
Dude why are you fear mongering. This is 100% false. I am a Mexican, live in Mexico City, have never once in my 40 years felt unsafe in Mexico. You are clearly not Mexican.
As a Mexican I would say this: Mexico is relatively safe if you blend in, but if you like nice things, say drive a Mercedes, that puts a target in your back no matter where you live. You have to be very discreet to live here.
It’s not a country, but the lovely scenic Island of Tristan Da Cunha is absolutely safe crime wise. No one even locks their doors there. In fact the only thing likely to kill you on the island is the boredom. 🥱
Thanks for your interesting videos. Stats are very dependent on what gets reported. Seems it is the norm for some places to sweep issues under the rug and not report crimes. That is how they can continue to attract people with money to their location. Just something to consider.

Great channel and fascinating overview of staying alive globally. Still wonder why folks would prefer an unfamiliar place to a familiar one, unless the threat to your safety was imminent at home. So, why move from a safe, familiar neighborhood in your home country to a safe, unfamiliar one in a foreign country? Maybe the higher tax you pay in you home country is the price of the familiarity you enjoy there. There almost always seems to be a vague unsettling feeling you get when in a foreign country no matter how beautiful, culturally rich, and socially active it might be. What this means to me is that a person would have to have an extremely strong incentive to move away from home. Definitely appreciate AH making us aware of the personal safety side of global nomadism.
Thank you for this interesting information. It would be good to know what percentage of the people who were killed where local and how may where foreigners. I guess such statistics are not available.
Agreed. Two weeks ago a guy got shot at a place I have breakfast often an upmarket restaurant in upscale area in Johannesburg. They walked in used a silencer and killed the guy a foreigner with UAE residency. The guys " walked out" didn't run and got away! Next day the restaurant was OPEN just another day! Cape Town is beautiful but just as dangerous too.

Thank you so much sir but if you include about volcanos, typhoon, tsunami, earthquake, good food, cheap, beautiful, investment opportunities, house maid service, low tax with little crime together, maybe Cambodia is one of the best choices.
Context is everything. Nationwide rates of anything isn't terribly relevant. You need to get granular to figure out if an area is suitable for living in. We live 30 minutes east of Atlanta. I don't worry about crime much at all because we don't really have any. 15 minutes closer to the city and crime goes up quite a bit. 30 minutes+ and South Atlanta is a whole other ball game, getting close to the south side of Chicago, in terms of murder and general violent crime. His comments on New Zealand had me laughing: $NZ3,000,000 for a shack! That's why we can't move back home to be closer to family. That and the fact that it is becoming a totalitarian shit hole, full of socialists and docile emasculated men. Going forward, personal freedoms is going to be the currency that I, my wife and a lot of other commonsense people will care about. If the country embraced stripping freedom of movement and threatened your livelihood in order to get mystery juice in you, then I'm out. New Zealand and Australia are dead to me.
Thanks Andrew, I was about to sell my house and move to Sudan or Syria thanks to your video 🤣 BUT.... 1. I know middle class expats who have recently lived in Colombia, Mendoza in Argentina, Bulgaria and Mexico City. The common denominator is you have a bullseye on your back for panhandling and property crime. As an expat. good luck calling the police in any of these places if you are robbed , threatened or in a car accident. My friend in Argentina had to routinely bribe the police just to come out. Each of them feels safer overall in the USA. 2. Remember, Andrew works with multi millionaires. As a middle class expat, you will not likely be much safer based on where and how you live overseas. Murder? If someone doesn't live in the inner city or is involved in drugs, chances of getting murdered or shot in the USA become less than miniscule. Yes, the current admin is soft on crime and pandering for votes, but the overwhelming majority of expats are safer in USA. 3. Andrew does not account for more countries are electing leftist govts, such as Colombia recently, who are inward looking and contributing to xenophobic, less expat friendly sentiment. I could go on but I'm getting carpal tunnel 😁 This channel does have good content but this video has no context , outdated data and looks at murders ina vaccum.
I wonder if some of the data for the really small countries is very easily skewed by a single bad year, just because one person is so much higher a percentage of the population. Just have trouble imagining St. Kitts & Nevis being that dangerous. Never been there though so no experience of it.
Which states in America are the least safe and why? If you remove those states, what does America's ranking look like? "Awaken with jp" brought up more details. Removing Chicago alone makes America far less dangerous!
@@2cartalkers Removing Chicago, Detroit, Washington DC, St Louis and Philadelphia puts the USA at rank 189, with the 3rd lowest murder rate in the world. Not to play partisan politics, the point is, due to gang activity, especially in Chicago, Detroit and Philadelphia, the ranking is skewed badly. It's probably the same for other countries.
Any Democrat city is unsafe. The mentalities caused by the Democrat culture has made youths extremely violent. BLM and antifa torched many areas of multiple cities over a false dead god, George Floyd. Commiefornians voted to make theft virtually legal if it's less than $1,000 and many businesses are leaving. Leftism is dangerous and needs to be eradicated by any means. Enough of the BS of tolerance.

One issue is when Putin, and his buddy in Belarus are done with Ukraine which country or countries will they invade next, and where will they stop or be stopped? I don't think anyone wants to buy property or move to a country only to have it invaded. This brings into question Georgia, and neighboring countries along with the Balkans.
This video is hilarious. So let me get this straight: "murder rates" are uniform across all countries according to you? Certain areas of a given country don't have a much higher proportion of the total murders than other areas (Ex. New York City vs Albany in the USA or Tijuana vs Chihuahua in Mexico)? And Syria just might be a better place to consider living than the USA because they have a lower murder rate?? Should I not take into account that the Syrian civil war, the second deadliest war in the 21st century, is still raging unabated!? And what about the fact that many of the countries you highlighted as having low murder rates have some of the lowest rankings on the Human Freedom Index, a composite measurement of levels of both personal and economic freedom which includes such trivialities as freedom of speech, religion and the press, freedom to get a divorce, impartial and fair courts, and freedom to prosper financially without intervention from the government or economic authority. (Most Middle Eastern and African countries are ranked near the bottom of this index by the way, with Syria coming in dead last.)
Your "implied math" is incorrect and misleading. Especially regarding Switzerland. The minimum wage in Switzerland is about $ 20.00 per hour. Which is nothing. It is an average of $ 40,000 to $ 48,000 per year, with SOME overtime, if they are allowed to work it. The tax rate is about 11.5 % in Federal taxes and an average of 36 % to 38 % in Cantonal taxes. That is about 49 % in annual taxes. In a country where the average rent for a one bedroom apartment is $ 1,300 to $ 1,600 per month.....about $ 19,200 per year. So, the "Net Income" is about...$ 24,000 per year and out of that comes $ 19,000 per year just in rent - - before utilities and.....FOOD. Don't even think the Swiss have it easy. They do not. They work very hard for an average "less than middle class" lifestyle.
Safety can be subjective! I lived in Singapore for 2.5 years and I’ve never felt so unsafe! While there may be not much Murder it is a very scary Police state. I’ve lived in UAE too and that is the safest place I have lived with such a family oriented Government & communities!

On a first glance, one notes South Korea as a First World country. It takes a long time to notice its cons and it takes an even longer time to notice its hidden pros. Some of the examples of hidden pros: -South Korea has a good medicare system, and it's not expensive especially when compared to the United States. -South Korea is one of the safest countries in the world. This comes to a shock to many because of North Korea. The United States is safe outside the major cities. In the major cities of the United States, people don't want to hang around in the streets at night for too long. People have no worries staying out at night in the South Korean cities even in the Seoul Metropolitan Area where the population is over 26 million. -Many of the old first generation Korean-Americans have returned to South Korea because of the two above. Many of the first generation emigrated to the US during the early 1980s when South Korea was still in its developing nation status. South Korea's living standards improved since then. -I moved to South Korea during the 1980s when I was a kid. So far, I witnessed only two recessions here. South Korea recovered from the first one (called the 1997 Asian financial crisis) within a year. South Korea endured the Global Financial Crisis of 2007-2008 pretty well. This was when many expats moved to South Korea. Currently, South Korea is facing another recession due to the pandemic, events outside of South Korea, and the way the previous South Korean administration handled South Korea's economy. The current administration is trying to remedy this. -Despite being a small country, South Korea has plenty of nature to visit. -Although South Korea's summers are usually hot and humid, this time it's not experiencing the extreme hot weathers that North America and Europe are now facing. -South Korea has a lot of attractions. A lot of it didn't exist when I moved to this country. Many more are expected to be built in the future.

Thats a really good idea :) hope they see it :)
it's more or less the same everywhere
and say if these stats. include domestic violence deaths? because if they do the risk is lower for visitors/migrants
I agree! Pre Covid and post Covid the world is a different place completely. Also places like El Salvador have completely changed.
That is interesting.. What other skill have you got hidden from yourself?

Really
There's good and bad, the warm evenings and nights are lovely but overall the heat lowers the quality of life especially with 60% humidity. All is SE Asia is like that.
@@okipo3443 There's always a way to survive in Asia. stay indoors between 11- 3 during the day. The other times it is still OK to go out for a walk. Like Malaysia, after raining it cools down quickly and it is not really that hot when you have breezes.

As a Mexican, I have to say that nowhere in this country is safe, not even the airports. Even landing in Mexico city represents a risk.
I find it extremely safe.
And they dont give out tourist visas for 180 days any more. And residence prices double. Stay away from Mexico!

Yeah lived there 4 month, the only danger is when you park your car in front of someone property, they get on edge. Very safe for sure, face mask everywhere though you won't see anyone. Can you make a video about nordic countries? Which one has better incentives to live as nomad capitalist?
Australia is very safe and most of the largest companies legally pay little or no tax.
Thank you for this interesting information. It would be good to know what percentage of the people who were killed where local and how may where foreigners. I guess such statistics are not available.
People visit Capetown, mistakenly thinking it’s safer than Johannesburg. It’s not and it needs ultra high levels of caution, even in the daytime.

Hey Nomad, have you researched Oman and Bahrain?
Which states in America are the least safe and why? If you remove those states, what does America's ranking look like? "Awaken with jp" brought up more details. Removing Chicago alone makes America far less dangerous!
Yesterday the statistics came out on this and the 9 red states that are pro-gun have the highest murder rates.
Thank you for saying this. I wrote something similar. Andrew seems not to care about these issues at all.
UAE hands down
What about Peru?
Yes for the most part but only because I live near a police station :)

Some of the examples of hidden pros:
-South Korea has a good medicare system, and it's not expensive especially when compared to the United States.
Thank you for taking the time to do that write-up. That is the kind of information that someone cannot just "google" Cheers mate.
Don't be cocky, use common sense, don't step on someone's toes, that should keep you safe anywhere.
People are obsessed with "not getting killed" like they are so important that someone would actually go after them to kill them..

Hardly, there are places in the US where white people are randomly murdered with no motive beyond being white. St. Louis is a prime example and anywhere near the airport is high risk.
