  • There's something awesome yet eerie about encountering a standing stone in the landscape. Why is it there? Who put it there? And how did they put it there? The fact we can't often answer these questions helps add to their mystery.
That absence of knowledge creates a vacuum that folklore is only too happy to fill. Speculation runs rife with these stones.
Let's take a look at the folklore of some of these standing stones in this week's episode of Fabulous Folklore.

I'm going to have lunch, and a bit of a walk (cold here, but dry), and then I'm going to climb into bed and listen to this fascinating podcast before having a nice long afternoon nap. Nothing like standing stones, megaliths and menhirs to make a Saturday afternoon complete.

I agree, I have loved these big old rocks for a long time and I don't see that changing :)

Often the standing stones have a shape at the top which match the shape of the horizon and will have another stone with in line of sight which will be just as tall as it needs to be to be seen

That's interesting to hear - many of these stones are rounded at the top!

All the legends about people being turned to stone due to mis behaving on Sunday seem to be connected to the Christian church which started a significant time after most of these stones were erected.

I know, but I'm covering stone circles in the next episode.

The Thompson Stone might well be the largest hag stone ever, if the hole is natural. 🪨

Initial investigations would suggest it is, but the hole is so small compared to the size of the boulder!
