I love how simple the old Lionel trains were. With the new prototypical sounds it is still relaxing to listen to the buzz and grumble off the old trains.
Great work Eric, I really love the shelving! I can't wait to see the weathering you have done. I can't wait for more Eric! Thanks for sharing and have a great day!
Great blog episode Eric! Well worth the wait. Nice job upgrading those engines, I might try that out one of these days. Thanks for the video and have a great one!
Duuuuuuuuude. Your layout and collection are awesome. I am HO scale myself, and I am just getting started again (had a lot of DC when I was a kid, but am now starting a DCC collection). Anyway, your layout is definitely something to aspire to. Thanks for all of the awesome videos! Hope to have a layout as awesome as your's one day.
The voltage to the motor is managed by the AC Commander board. So when you throttle it up, it supplies more voltage thereby making the engine go faster.
Today 5-10-13 is my 15th birthday. From my mom and dad I recieved a Lionel TMCC MoPac GP-20 and a Williams Black Pennsylvania 5 Stripe GG-1, and a trip to a train show. Lucky Me.
Thank you Eric this brings back childhood memories for me. I was a Lionel kid in the 1960's. My trains of course were not as technically cool as yours are !!!
AWESOME blog episode Eric!!!! Love the new shelving and new trains, but my favorite part was the postwar engine TMCC upgrade, looks like a fun project! Thanks for the vid bud! Can't wait for the open house in July!
No, I used to old postware electrocouplers that were already on the engines. Electrocouplers have been around since the 1930's. The only thing that's changed is how they are thrown....by the remote uncoupling track or by a command control system.
It was like that when I got it. There's 2nd 2343 that it was previously tethered to, so they were clearly modified at some point in time to run together...so the motors could have been reconfigured at that time. I'm really not sure....and it's not really a big concern for me.
If your from Georgia' tornadic storms would be the real concern! Any how its cool to see your latest video' it has been a wile. The Soo line diesel does not bother me' must be the "mid cab" that makes it look odd. Very entertaining 20 minute tutorial still the same. Eric' you ever watch any videos from " Millieum Force"? Alan has some great videos of various locations from around Florida at many R/R crossings and trains that come along.
nice shelves. One question though...shouldn't you have a lip at the front edge of the shelf so that things don't fall off by accident? Like you said, children like to touch things and just because it is out of their reach, it doesn't mean that something else can't hit it accidentally. You probably already know this, but its just a suggestion. Good vid btw!
another fine video, I been waiting for someone to show the internals of an upgrade to TMCC. Glad you showed that both engines could be lashed up and operated together. Are you thinking of doing a MTH upgrade? Keep up the good work the more information available for those new to the hobby the better it will be.
What is the latest on the narrow gauge part? Interesting video. By the way, are there anymore postwar engines undergoing command control installation? Lastly, is the COORS brewery nearing completion and how are the Colorado and Carolina rooms coming along?
I wish I could have all the engines u have an a mazing collection but I have some questions are going to get the new mth es44 or the MTH RR VERSION I heard there's only going to be 125 of them and do u sell any of ur trains
Do a video on how to clean the side of the Santa fee because my grandpa just bought the same model with similar damage to the shell if you can do a video on how to get the stuff of the side can you
That’s ok. Would it be possible to use one of these for a DC locomotive? www.ebay.com/itm/12V-Dimmer-Controller-RF-Wireless-Remote-Switch-Controller-for-LED-Strip-Light-S-/192674901408
When you install an AC command board to an old conventional engine can you use the DCS system to control the engine or do you have to use Lionel's Legacy system?
I wouldn't use them in California either. We don't get many big earthquakes in Georgia. If we did get one, I'd be worried about bigger things than my trains for sure. :)
Adding TMCC in either AC or DC is not that difficult. If I can do it, anyone should be able to. The one key that I found was in not getting in a rush and knowing which commander you need. By the way, I fully understand about little hands--age has nothing to do with it--even when behind glass!
I wouldn't use those shelves if I lived in an earthquake prone area. We don't get big earthquakes around here. If we did get a big earthquake, I'd have a lot more to worry about than just damaged trains. :)
Hi eric im restoring a old lionel 2020 turbine locomotive id like to put sound kit in the tender to give it that realistic roaring sound like a modern day one by lionel you made a video about one time can you tell me wear to find one of these kits iv seen them before by another youtjbe once but cant find his channel anymore if you. An tell me the best and most affordable way.that be awesome thanks paul palazzolo

Very cool seeing these old engines running like new once more, great job!
Thanks for the blog neat to see those old trains running . The Amtrack train is cool . Ready for your next blog !
Great work Eric, I really love the shelving! I can't wait to see the weathering you have done. I can't wait for more Eric! Thanks for sharing and have a great day!

you are a great inspiration as always, love the new things you come up with to teach me that i can do..thanks

It does. The rear coupler, however, is a dummy coupler that cannot be thrown remotely.
Great video, I'm really looking forward to your next few reviews.
Nice idea on the shelfs !
It's a very unique model now, having TMCC and a single Horizontal Pullmor motor. It still pulls very well, pullmors are extremely strong motors.
You and your collection is amazing !!!

Killer video Eric. You have inspired me to look into those AC command boards for some of my old lionel
this video inspired me to buy a conventional DC locomotive from the 90s and apply this DC commander upgrade
great job as all ways Eric. I think we need to see a time lapse video of your hair and beard growth from the first video blog up to this one!!!!
Thanks Eric! Looking good! -Mitch

If you had a Lionel TMCC command base connected to the DCS system, you could. Otherwise you need to use Lionel's system.
I'm amazed you can get those commander boards in the first place
Yes, I've ordered the Norfolk & Western version.
Eric should set up the horn some how on the 2343?
I normally use either Mega Steam or Lionel smoke fluids.
I have a Lionel 623 switcher, too.
i have the same clock in my living room!
I have two postwar nyc f3s they look and run great
Two a units and one b for an aba and they had worked for 60 years if not 50 and they are beautiful
Nice
@MICHAEL CIANCIOLO the postwar one is the 773
I was thinking the same thing. Maybe it's just a 2343 shell?
Thanks Eric!
That'd be cool if you did add directional lighting to your Lionel 623 switcher.
They're made by Glenn Snyder Display Systems. Just do a Google search for them and you'll find their site.
You can use the DCS remote to control track voltage, but not control the engine itself.
By standing up on a step ladder and grabbing it off the shelf.
The soo loco looks very interesting...LOL
Eric... Your video sound is fantastic... What you using.... thanks for the update!!

Hey Eric... I have a Lionel nw2 diesel switcher as well but the motor on one of the trucks blew out... how do I dismantle and put a new one?

I love all you videos! I think I'll make some upgrades too. J

So I’m guessing that you can run the TMCC equipped postwar engine on DCS if you have the TMCC command base and adapter cable?
Steambeast 21 yes
Ok thank you! Love our videos!
thanks man
I have just one question: How do bring one of your model locomotives down from the top first shelf?
Could you use MTH's DCS remote to control conventional locomotives without the AC command board?
How did you get your band aid?
I noticed you got the daylight
A GS4 has dual headlights, a GS2 has a single headlight. Eric's engine is a GS2 ;)
That F3 is interesting, 2343's were dual motored. Did you remove one or did you get it like that?
I wish I could have all the engines u have an a mazing collection but I have some questions are going to get the new mth es44 or the MTH RR VERSION I heard there's only going to be 125 of them and do u sell any of ur trains
Eric, who makes those shelves and where did you get them? Thanks!
Eric, what do you think of Lionel coming out with an E60 electric or a metro liner?
Great vid, i dont model this guage but i like your vids ....
Do a video on how to clean the side of the Santa fee because my grandpa just bought the same model with similar damage to the shell if you can do a video on how to get the stuff of the side can you
There's nothing to remove or clean. The paint itself was rubbed off at some point.
ericstrains thank you I will let him know
The southern pacific daylight is beautiful and you have the gs-2 and gs-4 I have the mth gs-4 daylight
Awsome Video Eric , are you ordering any NS heritage units?
Are you going to order the President Lincoln Funeral train and the additional two pack?
Why inst there a normal daylight gs6 i think with 2 headlights
Old engines, New Life
Fantástico!!!
How is the progress going with those engines?
Is there is a AC commander board for the lionchief system? If so how expensive is it and may I please have a link?
Steambeast 21 not that I’m aware of
That’s ok. Would it be possible to use one of these for a DC locomotive? www.ebay.com/itm/12V-Dimmer-Controller-RF-Wireless-Remote-Switch-Controller-for-LED-Strip-Light-S-/192674901408
Hopefully none of the shelves collapse this time. :)
The GS2 is actually a GS4, at least as far as I can see. I am pretty sure it is a GS4
When you install an AC command board to an old conventional engine can you use the DCS system to control the engine or do you have to use Lionel's Legacy system?
Both

Do you edit with iMovie?
Hey Eric, I was just wondering how the engines that you did the upgrades on move. Is the voltage changed, or is just the speed of the motor changed?
cool
You could never have those shelves in California, unless you have ample insurance.
Who could I contact to upgrade my Lionel 685 4-6-4 with TMCC?
I have that same clock
are you going to buy a y-3 2-8-8-2 lionel legacy model for your layout form the 2013 catolaog becaus it is a neet engine
band aid, what'd you do this time eric
nah, it's a GS2. GS4's had double headlights, the one he showed only has one headlight.
Lol agreed @Robert Gwiazda ! Haha!
Hi eric im restoring a old lionel 2020 turbine locomotive id like to put sound kit in the tender to give it that realistic roaring sound like a modern day one by lionel you made a video about one time can you tell me wear to find one of these kits iv seen them before by another youtjbe once but cant find his channel anymore if you. dose anyone answer these?
i really hope no one accidentally slams a door shut
Hopefully the shelves don't
I'm only 11
Dumb question
I have the same Lionel clock.
I'm only 11
