Casper Van Dien (Starship Troopers, Sleepy Hollow) joins us this week to share how he changed course from his military upbringing to pursue his dream of acting, and how his career has come full circle with the lives he’s impacted through this work. Casper shares a lot from his experience with Starship Troopers - from the marketing stunts that weakened it in the box office, to the industry legends who geek out over the project, and why there’s a resurgence in its popularity nearly three decades after its release. We also talk about what it’s like having a daughter pursue acting, his Ironside mentorship, and memorable moments on set with legends like Ernest Borgnine. Развлечения
Get Michael Ironside on the podcast! The two Michaels. Michael to Michael. That would be sooooo cool!
Michael Ironside is the go-to answer when I did bar trivia when someone didn't know the answer.
The definitive voice of Darkseid. He was just badass in the role for the DCAU.
Michael Ironside as Darkseid in my opinion is just as iconic as Clancy Brown as Lex Luthor and Mark Hamill as Joker. Guy made Darkseid a force to be reckoned with
@@ISBuckley8 I totally agree. His introduction in Superman: TAS literally was the best in my opinion. He was just badass. Whenever I see a Darkseid comic panel I hear Michael Ironside.
And the definitive voice of Sam Fisher as well.
I still don't know why they didn't get him to do Darkseid's voice in Smallville
Always read Darkseid with Ironside’s voice. Just perfect.
Michael Ironside's performance in Chaindance (with Brad Dourif) is one of my all-time favourites.
I worked with Ironside on two films he's a great dude and doesn't take shit from anyone and expects everyone to be professional, on that note he did bust another actors balls and told him he was going to kick his ass in front of 100 extras and the crew.
I need more details on this story
Michael Ironside is one of the greatest actors of all time!
he scared the shyt out of me since i first lay my eyes on him onscreen in Visiting Hours
Tom Welling and Casper Van Dien need to submit billing invoices to Rosenbaum for the therapy sessions he's putting them through.
have Casper Van set it up with Michael Ironside to have him on the pod.
He said dark side of him without any understanding of him being Darkseid lol
lol
lol Lex and Darkseid still beefing
Casper, you are forever my childhood hero.
Very several years ago at Dragon Con. I got a picture with you with the "Death from Above" tattoo. I didn't have the same tattoo. But it was on the same arm.
You are the best convention highlight in my life.
The ultimate get is Michael Ironside on the Pod. I think it would be good for both of them.
Met him last year. Him and Casper and others will all be at a con in a few months!
that's a funny anecdote about Ironside. I Just met him this month, and my experience was similar. He shook my hand firmly and pointed out that I have a trick wrist. Naturally one would want to get offended by being sized up, but he's that old school type. Once you get past his joke, he's a big teddy bear. I also heard that he was going to be a doctor before acting, so that makes more sense how they commonly evaluate people like that.
whats a trick wrist?
Now you need to get Ironside on the show.
Forever Diz!!!
This would be classic...Ironside does not even remember Michel R.
Great clip, I like the way Casper uses his ex wives to make the point that you can’t please everyone😄but don’t worry Michael we love you even if Michael Ironside doesn’t🤗
Rosie is the guy that Sam Fisher would keep interrogating after he already has all of the information.
That “YOU’RE DOIN’ GREAT!” at the end. I felt that. 😅
As people pointed out, it'd be cool to have Michael Ironside on the podcast. Make mention too that Eric Johnson replaced him as Sam Fisher in Splinter Cell Blacklist due to his illness.
I honestly can't remember any movie That Micheal Ironside has been in that I don't like, from low budget to blockbusters.
He is a true Icon of the industy and he is just one of those men that make others bring it up to their level like Charles Bronson, Lee Marvin, Donald Sutherland, or George Perppard they just elevate the other actors by being there.
I loved Michael Ironside as a kid. First saw him as Ham Tyler in the original "V" sci fi TV series. Then in "Top Gun" as Jester. After that, I started seeing him more in villain roles like in the original "Total Recall" as Richter, as The Alien immortal General Katana in "The Highlander 2: The Quickening" and as the Colonel in "The Next Karate Kid". So it was a relief to see him as one of the good guys again in "Starship Troopers".
@@johnlloyddy7016 He is one of the best Villain actors in the entire history of films, if you want to check it out he was more recently in a movie called Turbokid that is kinda low budget but he as always is awesome in the movie.
Highlander 2 ? Surely no likes that movie!
@@richardrickaby3439 it officially doesn't exist for fans of the franchise. It's like the X-Men Origins: Wolverine movie with Ryan Reynolds.
@@richardrickaby3439 you don't have to like the movie to appreciate the actors involved in it, that one was kind of a stinker yeah...
All actors are allowed a few, especially considering how many movies he has been in throughout his prolific career. I'd hazard to say some of his best roles have been in the lower budget movies he's been in...
Van Dien looks like a mature Steve Rogers - right out of central casting!
All you need to do is watch Michael as the villain in Scanners, and you know how great he is. If he's in a film, you know those scenes, at least, will be worth watching.
At least Michael is being healthy by not hanging on to a specific individual who he never has to interact with again
Ironside! what a legend! 💥💥💥🫡
MICHAEL VS MICHAEL 😂😂
Not everyone has the patience to pamper you, Rosenbaum.
met Casper while checking out the consignment store in Calabasas a few years back. He is definitely cooler than your average actor, and I got a strong sense that he's a great guy.
There is a reason why he looks so intense. If you do a deep dive into his background in Toronto especially as a kid. Oh boy it was bad very bad.
I can see Michael Ironside not really liking him, he is definitely the kind to talk your ear off which to a man born in the 1950s is very off putting.
The Scanners guy
Starship troopers,as far as Casper's influence, seems to unfortunately have slipped out of ❤. I still think all the movies, animated or otherwise are as good as robocop and aliens. There needs to be a resurgence or resurrection of the franchise. I wish neca would do the armor from ' traitor of mars'😂❤
Jester aint playin around
Michael R. should talk to Michael I. and have a therapy session about it.
Ironside always plays the ultimate bad guy.
I would also be afraid of a guy who could explode my head with his mind
Michael Ironside is the most fan-friendly actor I know. I got a rush when he ‘liked’ my reference to “Scanners” on a thread celebrating his birthday. His characters are definitely intimidating, but not the man, at least not to me.
Hey you know what I’ve been a fan of Michael Ironside for a long time.. My two favs of his are Visiting Hours where he played a villainous serial killer and of course the V series where he fought an alien invasion.. Wish he did a sequel to the former knock out some more SJWs lol
I’m kinda a new fan of Casper.. Just saw The Flood and right before that Assailant where he had his own unique Michael Myers like role!! Actually reminded me more of if MM were a military man
Casper has powerful eyes -- forget Michael Ironside, I bet Casper could be terrifying if directed to be. And as someone else has posted: Forever Diz!
Well now we know who should be on the show next…
He might be method. And since you were Lex Luther, on the show, he was keeping the mood to fit the onscreen personas.
Ironside is on the record no longer being on good terms with Jerry Bruckheimer and David Cronenberg, he couldn't care less...he's a cancer survivor and put in the years...
1:14-Shoutout to a local con!
Starship Troopers is a great movie. I think the movie and actors will never be forgotten. already legendary
(Shrug.) Used to be civilian with law enforcement. Hard men and women don't upset me. Most aren't all that bad.
It was only after watching it many times did I think Michael's character's death seemed like a cheesy Tim Burton scene in Starship Troopers .
Michael Ironside IS Sam Fisher.
Sam Fisher!
Hi there.
Of course he's a BAD ASS!!!!....he's SAM FISHER!!!!!
How hard did he come ? In the defense of Mr ironside
"Starship Troopers" was a great movie, better than the book I thought.
Not really. The film is complete idiocy. A script that had been floating around in Hollywood for about 5 years that was hastily repackaged into an "adaptation" of the book (aka they changed a few names). Director said he read one chapter of the book, and made it pretty clear he completely misunderstood what it was. The book has a far richer world that it paints a picture of. Starship Troopers is Fascist government sends super models to die in a war that it created. How deep.
@@TriarchVisgroup I would probably understand the book a lot better now. I read it back in like 94 or 95 wow that was a long time ago.
The movie was trash. Entertaining but B movie trash. The book is a classic. Read it in the 80's. When I heard a movie was coming out, I was excited. Then I saw a commercial for the movie and realized they had no respect for the source material. I hope they do a version more true to the book one day.
Starship Troopers the book is...effin boring, really. It's a lot of really dry text, and a lot of that text is just creepy, glorifying authoritarianism and corporeal punishment and s--- like that.
Starship Troopers the movie is a friggin hoot to watch, I always loved it, from the very first time I saw it in a cinema theater back in '97 or whatever it was. Really good action movie, fantastic music score, and the ensemble cast making it even better, it's not just a 1-man show kind of thing like a Schwarzenegger or Stallone movie would be at the time. Never bothered with any of the sequels though, I don't want to tar the original! ;)
@@TriarchVisgroup Paul Verhoeven grew up under German occupation during WWII, he recognizes fascism when he sees it, and he thought the book was trash because it glorifies fascism. Which is true. If you somehow missed that you need better glasses I say.
And yeah, it's a popcorn movie, so what. Nothing wrong with that. And yes, the deep(er) angle is that humans started the war with the bugs, we antagonized them by poking around where we did not belong. Which is something humans - and particularly westerners including Muricans - have done time and time again around the world.
I wonder if Ironside has always been like it or whether a little bit of Connery rubbed off on him from Highlander 2?
I saw him in V in 1984 and Highlander II in 1991. Ironside was always like that. The peril of having a deep voice.
@@davidweihe6052 Yeah I remember watching him in V back then too. He was great. I was thinking maybe as Connery was known for having an attitude for taking no sh*t, being professional, knowing the lines, showing up on time etc. whether MI saw that as something positive to emulate. 🤷♂
He just has a grouchy persona that has worked well for him in acting.
Jester
Casper has morphed into a Portland lesbian.
