    I hadn't rollerbladed in about 6 years. I'm 38 years old and I've been rollerblading all my life. Your videos motivated me to pick up my skates and go back out there. I've been having an absolute blast, I can't believe I had stopped rollerblading. Thank you so much for inspiring me and getting me to do something I absolutely love but had forgotten about it.

    It's good seeing a great skater wearing a helmet 🪖 showing the younger skaters how to look after themselves. 👍👍👍👍

      Strongly Agree...
      However these "skater" helmets seem more Ornamental than Functional.
      Yes, the outer shell protects you from abrasion and even very light impact. The outer shell also functions to spread out impact forces (important reason not to drop or scratch your helmet). The inner shell is typically made of Polystyrene (PS) and is designed to absorb these impact forces. The inner shell (plastic) deforms so that it does not rebound. This would otherwise cause your head to bounce after impact. Making a bad thing (much) worse.
      The problem that I find with these skater helmets? The inner PS shell is not rated to the impact forces typically found with skaters. I find these shells to be Much Too Hard and the PS in many cases to be of (very) low quality. And, incorrect fitting. Made to look like a helmet and not much else.
      Result? Minimal inner shell impact absorption. Most of the impact forces are translated directly to the head. As if you were not even wearing a helmet.
      Could I be wrong? Sure.
      Apart from skating, ice hockey, I do more aggressive (motor)sports like 600/1000 circuit track riding and SuperMoto (look it up). Have been skating and riding for nearly 40 years. Your gear, how it fits and the protection it offers become increasingly important to you as a rider. Hitting the pavement tends to hurt...
      Love watching TSS skate. :)

      @@TriAngles3D You are both right and wrong about the helmets. The helmets are essentially an insurance policy. If you bang your head on something, yes it will still hurt. These helmets are not designed to absorb impact in the same way an airbag is, or like motorcycle helmets. They are designed to crack and split taking energy out of the crash and protect your skull from splitting.
      In the EU we have the CE certifications which all bicycle style helmets need to pass. One of the tests is a droptest, where they drop the helmet with a weight inside at 13 mph onto a metal anvil.
      The accelerometer inside the helmet can't exceed 250 G. You will still have quite the headache, but at least you should get away without cracking open your skull.

    • @TriAngles3D
      @TriAngles3D 4 месяца назад

      @@kaspertillgaard676 Appreciate the input and remarks. Valued.
      For insurance? Not designed like airbag nor motorcycle helmet? Yes, all agreed.
      But designed to split? This sets a wrong design precedence in my view.
      A helmet that splits may restrict rebound and even rotational forces. But it adsorbs the impact significantly less. And, does so in a less preferred way.
      Materials (low yield strength, brittle, too notch sensitive) that crack ineffectively absorb impact energy. The energy remains focused (bad thing) over the fault line and is translated directly to the inner PS shell. This in turn cracks as well (more of a bad thing). The impact absorption is minimal. The result is more than just a headache.
      Bullet-proof glass cracks. But it is made up of many layers and each layer absorbs a lot of energy before cracking.
      Again, the idea that it is acceptable for the helmet to crack at impact sets a wrong precedence in helmet design and impact dynamics. It is bad practice.
      Skate helmet need to employ tougher outer shells and softer inner shell PS which better match the impact speeds. What I have seen, they don't.
      250G impact limit test. A brain weighs about 1.5kg. So that brain is max exposed to @ 375kg at impact? 250G is more than 2x the concussive impact range! The G curve is non linear. Twice impact speed means 4 times the impact force. So even at half that speed you are getting nearly 100kg peak impact?
      Rough calculation: At a velocity of 13mph or 5.8m/s. Assuming that
      - Brain 1.5kg
      - Impact duration limit 0.01 sec (longer is better)
      - Deformation helmet at impact limit 0.03 mtr
      5.8 x 5.8 x 1.5 x 0.5 = 25 joule of kinetic energy
      25 / 0.01 = 2.5 kw of power at impact
      25 / 0.03 = 830 N of mean impact force
      5.8 / (0.01 x 9.81) = ~60G
      60G is a sub-concussive impact for adults (but not for kids). What is the 250G test limit supposed to reveal? This seems overly excessive. Are you sure it is 250G?

    • @kaspertillgaard676
      @kaspertillgaard676 4 месяца назад

      @@TriAngles3D it's a peak force of 250G yes, and that peak force. Looked it up specifically for this.
      The thing is, if you make it too soft, the helmets need to be bigger, it would look more like a motor cycle helmet or a cross helmet, and good luck getting people to wear that when skating or riding their bike.
      In terms of the helmets splitting. Any force that is causing the helmet to split and crumble, is force that is not reaching your skull. The problem with making current helmet designs softer is that, if they try to absorb impact though deceleration in foam, is that your skull might just split inside the helmet instead. That's what I mean by insurance policy. Current bike helmets are basically just an extra thick layer of skull. It's going to hurt like hell. But you'll live. I know some people experiment with the helmet designs you are mentioning, but I've never seen a good one with my own eyes. Ski helmets actually behave more like what you describe, but they are also way bigger, and have to deal with a different kind of crashes. So there it makes sense that they cushen impact.
      I get what you mean about rotational force though. That's why the mips system was developed. But it's not mandatory in helmets.
      Chances are if you have a crash that's big enough where you end up smacking your head in a serious way, you are probably not skating or biking home anyway. I've tried cracking a helmet once. It was not fun, but I'm alive because of it.
      I trust the years and years of R&D that have gone into helmets, and I don't buy from cheap manufacturers. But more reputable brands.

    • @kaspertillgaard676
      @kaspertillgaard676 4 месяца назад +1

      Just a little addition. I don't quite agree with that brittle materials are worse at dealing with impacts. It's the whole reason why ceramic body armor exists. It takes all the energy out of the bullet by by essentially breaking. It's still gonna hurt, but at least you are not dead.

It's not a problem for me. Also i do running sometimes. 5-8miles per once. Also did a whole marathon once. So what do you think? Would i be able to maintain same speed and mileage on a roller skates? I think it could be even better in a big city... Delivering various stuff. I just need an advice
