Dean…you are a brave man taking on so many jobs and all at the same time…you must keep each set of bits in different containers to stop them getting jumbled up! On the car, yes the engine is scrap but the body shut lines looked a bit random at the front as if the owner had powered into a flood at a fair speed and the water had pushed all the front valance and grille slightly backwards. When the engine is out, give everything a good check and see if it all aligns properly…you need a full respray going by your inspection so the repair margins are financially very close.😬😬Good luck! 😃😃😃😃😃

That horrible rattle sounds like small end bearings. It quite possible someone started the engine with some cylinders full of water, which hydro-locked it. The engine was running on all cylinders so expect still enough compression left to run the damaged cylinders. The hydraulic lifters may also have been badly damaged. Without testing for oil pressure and compression test each cylinder, it’s difficult to be certain. It didn’t sound like big end bearings though, so could be a potential fix for someone. The engine was very tight at first due to the rust buildup on the cylinder walls where the water was still present-hence the explosion of rusty water when you cranked it over with the plugs out. A fun engine rebuild for someone !.

Rear spoilers were all carbon fibre. I fantastic car which with carbon ceramics and hence different wheels looks stunning. The pre Sept 18 cars sounded awesome. Now I havent got a clue about jag engines or it's setup but i had a similar noise on a vauxhall from the top end where a timing belt slipped, I replaced the belt & found that the noise was from a few broken rocker arms, i was lucky as i replaced them & all was good, i was told that the rocker arms were designed to break to save everything else from getting bent, I don't suppose jag thought of doing that did they?.

Could be a bent valve stuck slightly out of the head now and it's making contact with the piston. Either way would it be worth a strip down of that head just to see if you could get away with top end repair? Or is it easier to just drop the engine and replace?

I thought the Jaguar has a bearing knock. I doubt it could be the piston banging against the sleeves.

Could be a slightly bent piston after water got into that cylinder.🤷

How are your DRLs looking on the headlights. These led ones from 2017 to 2019 are known to have DRL failure. 3.5k for a new headlight.

Why didn't you empty the sump? What if the engine was full of water in the bottom end and when you turned it over / started it, you then caused damage?

I too watched this car, but bailed out at 22k just too much money with no mileage available at that time even if SVR, you were very brave! Note provisional sold price of nicely spec’ed later model Red V8 (450) flood cat n a couple of weeks earlier £18k + charges, what a bargain, just pip at post, dam!!

Did you try to change the coils or the spark plugs between them before taking out the engine? Probably it was a coil or a sparkplug gone bad and that could have been the problem.

Having had the same noise on another v8 it sounds like a bent valve that is stuck open and the piston is hitting it, check with boroscope and you may see witness marks on the piston
