    You the man Mark, helping truckers sell, trade, etc. their inventory. Gives you a chance to see and meet folks and gives the rest of us inside scoop to buying, selling sweet rides. That's funny: Mark asks if he really wants to sell this truck, and Anton starts to second guess himself, classic.

  • @gac914
    @gac914 2 года назад +14

    Fun fact! The trucking company I was a mechanic for in the late '70's was strictly at that time International only. We had a LOT of 4070 "B" models, as the length laws back then made COE's the only way to go to get under the (then) restrictive laws. International made a deal with one of our big lease customers out of St. Cloud Minnesota to drive a full prototype of the 9670 cabover-- brand new, not yet issued for service. I was working midnights at the time, and here comes this truck middle of the night that none of us had ever seen before, cobbled full of non-standard parts (including a grill off of a conventional 4200 series.) The dash was pretty-much complete as the one you rode in in this video, and of course it had the new-style bigger cab. They stopped off because there was a problem with the lights. We had absolutely NO parts, as you can imagine. We got them going by rigging up some jumper wires so they could continue. That truck was loaded with cables running to all parts of the frame, and the luggage compartments had recording devices inside that was keeping track of stress data on frame points. Basically, I was one of the first mechanics to ever work on the new-style 9670 International COE's, prior to manufacturing!
    As for the shifter, he's right that it is linkage. It has a rod shaped almost like a spear with a ball welded perpendicular to the end of the shaft that coupled with the shift handle in the cab. It was pretty reliable, as long as you tweaked the adjustment right. What wasn't so was the clutch! It was a clutch cable, which was actually thin bands of flat metal inside of a cable and sandwiched by dozens of ball bearings on both sides of the metal bands. The problem was they were prone to breaking, and with no warning they would just let go, and you had no clutch. There were also availability problems in the beginning years that was bad enough that we bought new clutch cables, still in their flat boxes, and placed them under the mattress in the sleeper so that, while they'd have to find someone on the road to change it out, (which was quite a job,) they at least had the parts!!
    Overall they weren't a bad truck. As with any model truck they had their peculiar problems, but they were a lot better and more comfortable then what they replaced, (the 4070 "A" and "B" models.)
    Kudos to Anton, he did a nice job restoring it! Hope he makes a sale!!! 👍

    I had the same exact type truck from late 1984 until early 1989 when I bought a special ordered, unsold 1988 Freightliner conventional. I loved that International. Never had a bit of trouble with it and after getting out of a 1970's F Model Mack cabover, that International felt like a Cadillac!! Thank you for the videos you do. This one sure brought back a lot of good memories!! And I even made a few trips into Canada and brought lumber back out going all the way down to Oklahoma. For the most part, fuel was still under 1.10 a gallon. Most places it was under a dollar a gallon. Thanks again, this retired old driver thanks you a lot.

    I like this idea!Also, nice power smoke. I have an identical interior, but I’ve replaced the head unit with a kenwood that does wireless CarPlay. Once you delete the damn thing, the 6.7L is quite the reliable beast. Someone not far from me who does long haul trucking has one of those 900’s from the beginning of the vidya in this crazy 80’s paint scheme. I’ll have to get a photo.

    More on the blue W900 flat top with Gibson's decals... Boychuck got bought out by Gibson's around 2003/04 I believe, when Gibson's took over the methanol haul from the plant (which no longer exists) at 17 St and Yellowhead. Gibson's also took over Boychuks yard also across the street from methanol plant on south side of Yellowhead at 17 St. Each of Boychucks trucks were custom built, had 550 Caterpillars in them, and were METICULOUSLY taken care of! Gibsons originally used them as company trucks, but when they got rid of company drivers, offered the truck for purchase to the driver so they could keep working. The truck you saw Mark was hauling molten sulphur the last time it was working, but since Trimac has bought out the trucking division a couple years ago or whatever, obviously that truck never made the switch. I did two stints at Gibson's, I was thinking maybe I know Anton if he worked there. Great episode Mark, love the local flavor from Edmonton!!
