Question about your container. I have tried to purchase the poly containers from my recycling center and they were very concerned about me using them for planting edible crops. They said they couldn't guarantee that they have no contaminants in the plastic. Do you have any tips on making sure the barrels aren't toxic? Even getting them from marketplace can be risky. And of course, new food grade containers would outrageously expensive. I wonder if there is a test or something that can be done on the inside plastic? I love your work and thank you for sharing!
That's a good question. My opinion, everything has contaminants, what we breath, what we eat and drink. What you think is organic is not always entirely organic, and no one really thinks of the plastic that it comes in. You can purchase containers from your water company and even from restaurant supply companies. I just did a search and found on OfferUp.com food grade containers/ barrels used at restaurants. Even home depot sells them but 5 gallons only (if you want to make a small garden). Hope that helps!
Put your barrel under your eaves trough overflow for a month or two, this helps to wash away some of any contaminants. I also use dawn liquid dish soap , put the soap on the inside of the barrel with a sponge , scrub it in the best you can, place barrel under eaves trough overflow for a month or two and empty. And your ready to plant , start the barrel cleaning process early in the year, I even leave the barrels out all winter to make sure they are ready by spring
@@jameslaw3740 thanks for the suggestion but the bottles are what is easily assessable where I am and they are working well the way I have them fitted.
Your not causing the mitre \ chop saw to go on fire , your problem is that the blade is dull......once you heat the barrel enough to make your holes , shove a wine\pop bottle in to make the plant holders..
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I will be I’m using a similar set up with my raised garden bed.

Is a one gallon jug enough of a water source for such a big tower garden ?
It's more like a reservoir. It helps by capillary action to keep the soil moist mainly where the roots are. And doesn't require daily watering.
Put a bottle of water at the top and let it slow drip, I use a similar concept with my container trees.
Steve , you need to fill the jug once or twice a week to keep it working. Depends on how hot your climate is in your area...
@@nimwayxi175 use olla clay pot system instead of a plastic bottle, it works a lot better and it is easier to refill

ooh! Great idea!
You need a gauze separating between black gold dripping and the scrape, don't u ?
Your wicking system is only at the bottom ? Hmmmmm
No gauze, there is a screw-on cap at the bottom of the PVC pipe. And wicking only at the bottom.
why aren't you making someone a sandwich
Because that's boring. I like using carpentry tools. ;)
