  • The Short Scion was designed as a simple rugged machine for airline and air taxi use. Twenty two were built between 1933 and 1937. There was also a four engined version that will be covered in a later film. Look at the Medway Aircraft Preservation Society website for more information about G-AEZF.

    Excellently researched and recounted history of a less well known aircraft. Thanks!

    In the 60s,70s as a young lad i remember Scion G-AEZF sitting outside Hangar 2 north side at Southend Airport. There was not much of her just the Airframe with no fabric with the wings lying in the grass nearby.

      I visited the MAPS workshop in September 2022 when I flew the Aeronca C3 from Cornwall to Kent. They are doing a magnificent job of the restoration.

    Thanks for this, I had no idea there was more than just the one survivor at MAPS, it will be great to see the Aussie one fly.

    Odd looking plane -- and such thick wings!
    I like your videos; subscribed & thumbed :-)

      In the context that it was a cantilever wing with a girder spar, the thick wing section is understandable. It was possibly over-engineered?

    Thank you for going to such great lengths to share the history of important, but lesser know aircraft. Being from the colonies and having flown many Aeronca aircraft I love your stewardship of the C3 and better is the fact that you actually use and exercise it. Looking forward to your next video.

      I've several flying adventures planned for the C3 this summer if the weather plays fair. A combination of history and flying, all within an hour or two of home.

    The Short Brothers knew their stuff. But despite the modern building techniques, it manages an amazingly string-bag look (despite no wires!) With a different skin I’m sure the impression could have been a lot more art deco modern.
    Is there anything know of the single engine performance?

    • @FlyingForFunTrecanair
      @FlyingForFunTrecanair  25 дней назад +3

      The single engine performance was poor; the operating engine took the aeroplane to the scene of the accident.

      @@FlyingForFunTrecanair ah yes, that ago-old story. Making a complicated dilemma of a simple problem…
      Suitable engines that matched desired economy was clearly still out of reach.

    Thanks Trecanair for another absorbing and entertaining video! As always, I look forward to more in due course.
    Brings to mind an old library book by Captain Fresson: Air Road to the Isles, which included chapters on operating Pobjoy engined Monospars, in Scotland, before WW2.
