I sailed with Manchester Liners from 1960 to 1967 and later as a Dock Superintendent in Montreal for their parent company Furness Whithy till I retired in 1998.My first vessel was the Manchester Shipper which was used in the making of the Movie A "Taste of honey" starring Rita Tushingham. My last vessel was the Manchester Miller whose bridge front was used as inspiration for the design of Manchester Liners house which at the time was ML's HQ . In Montreal I looked after shipping the specially commissioned by Mr Stoker ML CEO Totem Pole which stood outside the HQ building.I have been fascinated by the transformation of the Salford Quays from the gritty commercial docks into a huge media centre
OMG! I had forgotten all about 'Old Jamaica' chocolate I loved that also Cresta fizzy drink, it was like having a mouthful of sherbet that came out your nose and rotted your teeth at the same time. Great days hey Martin that took me straight back thanks for that, keep sane everyone we will soon be through this.
I loved Ice Breakers. Green mint chips in chocolate. Pink panther and Caramac i spent a fortune on haha. Great to look back . Makes you smile eh. Many thanks. All the best.
Thank you Martin for another fantastic magazine programme. Chocolates, Aztec, Cabana, Waifa, dark chocolate for preference and Terry's Spartan, all dark chocolate, all hard centres, hard core. Bay Tree and Laurel, the same thing, see what those witty Victorian mill owners did there.
I have only seen a wrecking ball being used once. In the early 1970's. We (My Mother, younger sister and I) lived in Gorton (Peacock Street, now gone)I presume named after the Bayer-Peacock Locomotive works, that existed for a long time in Gorton. It was all dilapidated Victorian 2up 2down Terraced housing, no running hot water, outside toilet at the bottom of the yard, a bucket in the bedroom for having a pee at night and an old fashioned cast iron range, no doubt worth a fortune now, in the back downstairs room for warming water, filling the tin bath, etc, Manchester City Council were demolishing the houses (complete streets) under slum clearance and I watched the houses further up the street being demolished with a wrecking ball. We ended up in Heald Green, near Wythenshawe. That was the first time at the age of 7, I had seen wide open fields, cows, sheep, etc on the local farmland (as it was then, now in the main airport car parks). Until then I had only seen Lions, Tigers, Elephants, etc at the Belle Vue Circus on Hyde Road. I learned to swim at the old Gorton Tubs, as it was the only time of the week, we were truly clean. That was only around 45 years ago, my kids, I was a late starter with kids at the age of 30, my eldest being now 22, they thought I was lying until they saw pictures of what I used to live in, in Gorton. That shocked them, as they take what they have for granted, the nice things of indoor plumbing, central heating, double glazing, internet and wifi, among other things.
Im only 50 and can relate to what you say I witnessed the clearances of North Manchester as a kid and the building of housing complexes since demolished as they were aweful. My Grandparents still had outside toilets well into the early 80,s. Crazy how some younger than us say in their 40,s have no idea what things were like eh lol take care TimeTraveler lol
Mint Cracknell. Also a Mackintosh’s bar, always had them in the vending machine at Warrington Baths. They came into 2 pieces which is why we were allowed them as I was 5 and my brother 3 and it saved arguments about ‘bigger’ halves! Spring 1975.
Thanks Martin. Old Jamaica was fantastic, as was Caramac. A trip down memory lane for us middle-age folk. I think the 'magazine' videos are perfectly fine in the circumstances and it's always good to see your stuff. Can't blame you if you're going a bit bonkers - we all are. Thanks for doing what you're doing. Mike
Great video Martin. Some chocolate I’d forgotten about. Was waiting for you to mention the Texan bar and possibly even a Cabana! That picture of the mill with the children outside circa 1900 is just awesome!
Excellent memories with the chocolate bars, one I remember from that era are Aztec bars. Loved the vlog and please for me there is no need to apologise for your waffling. I love the way that you source your information and present it to us, it is absolutely fantastic. I am also getting fed up with lockdown and am looking forward to your next vlog of the old mills etc.
Hi Martin. Remember going on a Golden Rail holiday back in 1972/73 to Ventnor on the Isle of Wight with my then girlfriend, now my wife. The organisation was brilliant and everything was catered for and included, train from Manchester Picc to London Euston, Underground tickets to the next mainline station, mainline train to the ferry port, ferry to the island, old fashioned re-purposed tube train journey from Ryde Pier to Shanklin and finally a taxi to the hotel in Ventnor, 10 nights in the hotel and then the return journey. Golden Rail sorted every thing out for what was a reasonably moderate cost. Shame that they couldn't have something as well organised as this in this day and age. British Rail also used to have a travel club that organised charter trains at the weekends to named and mystery destinations. Went on some cracking trips with the travel club. I think that the furthest we got was Canterbury from Manchester Picc. Spent an age getting there, spent three hours in Canterbury where we met up with friends, and then spent an age getting back. It was however to coin a phrase.....cheap as chips.
Went back to Manchester about 3 years ago on Holiday to see relatives and did not know many of the chocolate bars or sweets that I knew when I lived there 45 years ago but I do remember Caramac it was one of the only chocolates that I longed for and we went all over Manchester to try and find it, to all the big super markets and they said the same thing sorry not had them for years. Then on a trip of nostalgia we went into the city centre and by sheer luck found Caramac in the Pound Shop near Market Street 2 pound for 3 big bars “heaven on Earth” Over here in Perth Western Australia you can buy UK lollies in our supermarkets in a small section in an isle marked British Goods. Things like Tizer, Iron brew, and lots of chocolate we have never seen before but they do have Sorene Malt Bread “Just a little bit of Britain in Western Australia”. Keep up the great work Martin. Regards Bill
Hello BP! Are you still getting your essential octanes? ;-) I lived and worked in China a number of years ago but any time it was necessary for me to be in Beijing I used to make a point of going to "Sally's Shop" (that's NOT the right name but it had a ring like that). She was a very astute local woman there that had twigged that foreigners sometimes had "cravings" for things they missed from home and had opened up a chain of stores across the city. It was nice to know that if you wanted those things that you "missed", they were available. She was a very amiable and congenial woman and obviously had her head screwed on the right way. Additionally, there used to be two ex military blokes over here (UK) years ago that set up their own business providing and posting things that expats missed from home. It came about through the pair of them wishing for this and wishing for that while they were stationed overseas. Once out of the forces they set up said business, to post stuff to expats. Sadly my memory does not serve me well so I can't remember the name of their company. It would be nice to know if they were still going.
I'm from Michigan. Never been to England.. Would love too, but probably will never happen.. But I know more about Manchester than anyone here..😁. Love the videos. So much history..
Those Mills look so beautiful on the outside , the architecture is amazing . How ever the way they built those floors with those posts more than columns !!!! , just looks so flimsy . Obviously they weren't as the stood so long and im sure with heavy machinery in there at some point . Great video as always and don't worry I think we are all getting a bit of cabin fever with this lock down on .
Absolutely bloody brilliant Martin! Loved every bit! When you showed the pink panther bar I could taste it and felt sick! 🤣 it was some perfume y strong tasting strawberry flavour that I’ve never had since! Thank goodness! Keep them coming! 👍😁👊
Cheers Martin. Good variety of subjects, all helps to keep the moral of your viewers up. Gorton, now if you could find something on the Loco works, heaven, Bayer Garrets ! Ye gods. John
I absolutely LOVED icebreakers!! My mother used to buy me one on Thursday before going to bingo, and I used to drink it with a glass of cold milk, which intensified the mintiness
Great video Martin! The only time we saw a box of Weekend Chocolates was at Christmas. Ice Breaker was Turquoise coloured mint crystal's in milk chocolate. You could also get Milk Tray chocolates in a bar form as well as Dairy Box. They only stopped selling Crackerbarrel cheese in the UK about 2 - 3 years ago. 👍🙂
Nostalgia? Life on Mars was a good tv series based in 1973 snd much of it was filmed around Manchester, would be good to see a video of the locations used with your take on the history of them when this lockdown is over. If you didnt watch it, i would reccomend it, its on iplayer at the moment,
Ye Gods, Golden Rail! I went on my honeymoon on Golden Rail from Blackpool North to St Ives, they held a train at Birmingham New Street because ours was late. A taxi from Euston to Paddington and then the sleeper to St Ives and all arranged and paid for on our ticket. It was amazing.
I thought you were losing the plot when you started talking about a box of chocolates on a bar - until I saw the picture and then I remembered them. 😋 Really enjoyed seeing inside the Space Studios. We did a load of initial survey work there for the conversion from a computer centre to the studio complex. I never got to see the finished product so that was great. I still recall being taken aback by that enormous hall the first time I saw it. And the 1st floor plant room that ran along the whole length of the building - massive.
Hello, Martin. Great video. My younger brother loved 'Pink Panther' bars, and was given a load of them one Easter, along with a 'Rupert The Bear' egg, which was orange. He ate most of them in one go - and the result was inevitable, as you can guess. My favourite chocolate bar was the teeth-unfriendly 'Texan' bar. In winter, hard enough to shatter teeth, in summer, sticky enough to pull out fillings and dislodge crowns. They were awesome.
No Matter what the content , Its wonderful to see your smile and enthusiasm for life. All is well here in Peru. On our 3rd consecutive lock down. Blessings and thanks for offering some consistency in my life
Great video once again, I remember they used to use a wrecking ball a lot to pull buildings down but gone are the big brick buildings of years ago, they tend to use a hydraulic muncher now. I can't believe some of the prices on those choc bars, unfortunately I can remember every one of them.
its a shame that we have changed so much because most of us have forgotten of how we used to live and things around us have changed like things we eat and things we do all the things you showed i remembered some you can still buy and some have gone never to be seen today.
Great video Martin, really enjoyed the mixture of subjects, chocolate at the end too,i remember all those , its first time since I was a kid that I have thought of them, thanks a lot Martin 👍🙂
Fantastic vlog there bud, and keep waffling you are a very talented presenter. Weekend box of chocolates both me and my wife said wow remember them lol. Stay safe and look forward to the next installment of the wet earth colliery (?) when we can all get out. Frrreeeeeeeedommmmmmm. ;-)
Space Studios is on the former ICL/Fujitsu complex, which I visited a few times as a kid because my dad worked there. Nice to see the site put to good use. I think Old Jamaica got rebranded but still exists. A lot of the other old Cadbury stuff can still be found in Australia, disguised as different types of Dairy Milk.
I really enjoyed that, Martin. I remember Fry's Five Boys chocolate, but that was probably before your time! When I was at school Old Jamaica was 9d (not 9p!) 50% more than the usual 6d bars so I couldn't afford it very often. Talking of Granada Studios, I sometimes worked in Manchester and used the car park adjacent to Salford Central Station. From there you could see a building which had a big sign on it saying Manchester Chromium Plating. I had an old car which needed its bumpers re-plating so I went round in my lunch hour to enquire about it. I went through some big doors expecting to see some sort of works. Instead there were loads of tables and chairs and some security guards rushed in. I said what I had come for and they said it was the canteen of the studios. The sign about chromium plating had been put up to disguise the use of the building as they assumed that nobody would ever enquire about it! I also had a Chrysler Avenger. It was a much better car then the Hillman Imp it replaced but fell apart in rust when it was about 7 years old.
Space studios is on the old ICL West Gorton site. I did several weeks there on a college placement and then ended up working at the ICL manufacturing site in Ashton building and testing mainframe computers. Yet another world-class British company that got bought by a foreign firm. I loved icebreaker. Green mint bits in chocolate. Love the collection of subjects Martin. Nothing wrong with nostalgia.
Great vlog those studios looked amazing it gave it a real sense of size when you came running across the floor you looks so tiny. The out take around that door was so funny nearly shouted out its going to shut. Some good photo's of the old mills being pulled down some good memories to look back on. Chocolate bars I remember quite a few of those chocolate bars Weekend I remember those with the picture of the chocolates, Marathon oh yes 3p wow , Old Jamaica used to love those rum fantastic.Don't remember ice breaker for sum reason or the dairy box, Pink Panther i remember really sickly your right wasn't that keen on them. Enjoyed the loopback keep up the good work stay safe and see you in the next.
Martin, loved the video. The magazine format is working fine, it's very interesting and the different topics are great. These days guys like Danny can use online radio to make a show and get people to listen. Back in the day the only way to do that was a pirate FM radio station hidden in a bush or a shed with a cheap transmitter connected to a cheap cassette player just in case the GPO tracked the signal down and confiscated the equipment. Icebreaker was mint chips in dark chocolate. A bit like Matchsticks (at least they're still going) but in a block of chocolate. I swear the mint bits in Icebreaker were like mint popping candy. I see Fry's are coming back as a brand. Fry's Chocolate Cream is back and also Fry's Mint Chocolate cream. For the nostalgia fans I saw them in Bargain Buys of all places. Shouldn't mention that, it's like admitting to shopping at Netto! Caramacs are still around, you see them from time to time. Cola flavour Spangles should make a comeback. One of my favourites.
thanks martin for nother great video of the film studios in manchester, grat to see, keep safe and look forward to more videos to mae me homesick. beryl
Thanks Martin for another fantastic and very professionally done vlog with great and professionally done music. I remember all the chocolate bars and I ate them by the tons (no wonder I'm diabetic now). Take great care and all the best. Stevie
Hi Martin. Due to the lockdown I have been watching some old series on netflix and I re-watched "Life on Mars". As you no doubt know, it was filmed in Manchester and some of the old street names like Dale Street are visible. In episode 3 which centres around a textile mill it shows inside the mill and the old looms. Also the name CRESTERS can be seen on the side of the mill. These things would have meant nothing to me when I watched it back in the day but being a part of your journey made me think of you.
Another great video...keep them coming!! Here's a potential magazine subject for you...the mystery of the Heywood canal. According to my dad (age 83, lived in Heywood all his life), the canal mysteriously burst its banks just before the M62 motorway was due to be built across it. Apparently, most people in Heywood thought that dirty tricks were employed to wreck the canal, therefore saving money on the M62 construction. The canal was closed, and traces of its path through the town are now hard to find. Might be a video idea there for you.
Parts of the CAPTAIN AMERICA MOVIE was Filmed in Manchester, I got to watch A TASTE OF HONEY last week the old houses And those steps you filmed were in it. Keep up the Good Work
Thank you for another great video you do make me smile, I remember the chocolate bars my favourite was all of them 😂 so weird watching the pictures of the demolition such a shame all that history gone as with other mills the story's they could tell, anyway thanks again for another interesting video 👍🤗
I love this! Seeing shows and candy bars that I consumed as a child. In Canada, we are a mix of Canada-USA and the UK. Coming from the UK you would see the US influences. Coming from the USA you see the UK influences. As a Canadian, we are neither British nor American. We weave somewhere in the middlish and love you both after all we are family.
Great nostalgia Martin. I seem to remember the Pink Panther bar being strawberry flavoured. Probably made from white chocolate with colouring that sent us into overdrive!
Its a fab format Martin. Enjoyable. Oh remember those booty bags and the frys multi flavoured chocolate bars. Can you remember the Northumberland Fudge it was like a mixed concoction of chocolate, fudge, nut and biscuit mix. Really yummy. Keep up the fab work m8. Best wishes Kenners.
Good afternoon Martin! Yeah, some good memories there with those sweets/toffees/chocolates/etc. Happy days! Old Jamaica was one of my granny's favourite's but I always got the lions share of it when I used to visit her. I asked about the availability of that in a place called Wragg's Tavern (in Royton. All sorts of the old school sweets and beverages available, to an extent) about 4 years ago but they couldn't get hold of Old Jamaica. Caramac is still going though but you have to search for it. Wragg's used to have it but I've not been in for ages so...…. Incidentally, in Shaw there's a toffee shop called Cissie Barlow's "Old Traditional Sweet Shop" on Market Street (opposite the Blue Bell pub) that sells, as it's name suggests, all the sweets and toffees we used to buy for a penny or two when we were kids. She has liquorice sticks (them bits of twigs you used to chew then spit all the fibrous bits out once there was no taste left), them hexagonal ginger coloured brittle sticks that were/are about 5" long and a whole heap of other stuff that takes you back to times gone by. Sadly her sweet jars with the screw on lids are plastic versions of the old thick glass jars, as they used to be. It seems they are still available but they now cost a kings ransom to buy. Apparently, Cissie Barlow had run the shop as a family business until quite recently but when she decided she'd had enough and was going to retire her neighbour bought the business off her and keeps it going.
hi martin these mish mash videos are just great, so no worries on that score. Alway's nice to see something new like those large film studio's(what was there before they were built?).A big thank you to dean for the music.Great photo's of the mill as it was ,love the photo of the kid's standing by the mill if i stare at the photo it draws me into it and you almost can imagine yourself being there. Nice to the out takes of you plonkers with that door (it was very funny) .Take care and don't worry about going out because we all can wait ..
Great video of the mills 🏭 and great to get the opportunity of filming around Space studios been in there its amazing. Hope to met up with you after lockdown. Take care 😜👍 x
Chocolate - lol comes in one size and flavour-that's large and chocolate 😂thanks for the trip down memory lane of childhood chocolate favourites 👏❤️😁please stay safe and well sending regards xxxx
My Grandparents used to use the Golden Rail service to the Isle of Man when they took my sister and I on holiday with them. They liked it as it was all bought and paid for (except spending money) before you went, so no nasty hotel bill surprises at the end of the holiday. Package holidays, before they became really popular, later on with cheap air travel.

Thanks for the keeping the videos coming Martin in these strange times. Very much appreciated. Thank you.

which was the most beautiful mill . i wonder .

That's was great fun thoroughly enjoyed watching, loved old Jamaica chocolate and the box of weekend and Caramac yummy! Cheers take care.
Another great video and full of nostalgia 👍👍
Love these videos Martin! Don't think of them as a downgrade from your usual. These are great!
@17:46 OMG I wonder how many people recognize that "Bomber Harris" name. That fellow is either VERY old or he has a GREAT sense of humor.
Thanks Colin 😀
Fantastic vlog there bud, and keep waffling you are a very talented presenter. Weekend box of chocolates both me and my wife said wow remember them lol. Stay safe and look forward to the next installment of the wet earth colliery (?) when we can all get out. Frrreeeeeeeedommmmmmm. ;-)
Thanks Steve, regards to your Mrs
I love a bit of Madness! My favourite Chocolates from yesteryear were Toffee Treets. Another great video. Good lad.
In Woolworths?
Thanks for sharing it put a smile on my face really needed that 😃
Very amazing video well done and keep up the great work and I hope you and your family keep safe and well

Thanks Martin, ive just moved to West Gorton from Rochdale,& never even seen or heard of Space,,ill go for a nosey about "when we can"..👍
Thanks very much Dave, I need to watch that
Really digging these magazine style videos, and all, Martin. Cheers, mate.
Weekend chocs, blast from the past
Never knew about those studios there, fantastic for making local programmes. I loved Caramac , that colour though !! Stay well Martin 👍👍
Many thanks! Anne
I can't believe how much I've forgotten!
Same here 😆
Great production Martin - well done . keep e'm commin.
Thanks Colin
Always interesting Martin, thankyou !
Thanks Gareth
Great to see Space Studios again. I worked on a video production for a certain Manchester football club in studio 5
Some good music, there, by Dean. A bit of an OMD vibe, perhaps a little less frantic. And it's good to see TeamZero keeping busy! Thanks for this.
You be as self-indulgent as you like Martin, fantastic memories!
Thanks for the video Martin. Both funny and sad seeing the mill coming down. The pictures are 'gold' - thank you 😁. Luke G
Cresta lemonade, loved the stuff used to buy it from gateway.
Parts of the CAPTAIN AMERICA MOVIE was Filmed in Manchester, I got to watch A TASTE OF HONEY last week the old houses And those steps you filmed were in it. Keep up the Good Work
Great that Martin, keep them coming matey.....Allen.
exhalent video martin love the nostalgia keep safe
Thanks Paul 😀👍
Great nostalgia Martin. I seem to remember the Pink Panther bar being strawberry flavoured. Probably made from white chocolate with colouring that sent us into overdrive!
I think so! 😀
I remember Old Jamaica! Don't 'ee knock it back all at once! :-)
Nice one Martin! Stay safe! :-)
Very nice video Martin thank again make me 😂😂 I hope soon we all get back to normal. See you next video.
I hope so too 👍
Good afternoon Martin!
That sounds good Jeany, worth a visit to Royton and Shaw
i live 2.5 miles from space studios sister site, the sharp project, both look amazing, dont know how i never knew it was there.
hi martin these mish mash videos are just great, so no worries on that score.
Commer van is wondrerful. You need a Bedford with those really low foot level windows :) I can't find one.
Chocolate - lol comes in one size and flavour-that's large and chocolate 😂thanks for the trip down memory lane of childhood chocolate favourites 👏❤️😁please stay safe and well sending regards xxxx
Thank you 😄
Keep Safe, Thanks for the Videos Martin 🤘
My Grandparents used to use the Golden Rail service to the Isle of Man when they took my sister and I on holiday with them. They liked it as it was all bought and paid for (except spending money) before you went, so no nasty hotel bill surprises at the end of the holiday. Package holidays, before they became really popular, later on with cheap air travel.
