I don't know it seems to me that Novak was not mentally or physically prepared for this match. I think he like many others was expecting a physically diminished Nadal and found one who was not only injury free but very aggressive. Novak to me was not in any shape to go 5 sets with Nadal which I believe he felt would be the length it would take to win the match. The time, conditions and not the least of all the opponent he was facing made it impossible for Novak to play the way he would have liked.

I think a big key to this match was that Nadal's physical condition did take Novak by surprise. He knew that Nadal was in better condition than it seemed from Nadal's interviews in the lead-up, but he did not think Nadal was going to be at 100% and he absolutely was. Thus, it took Novak a set and a half to get his bearings right given this new reality. If Novak played the way he did mid-way through the second from the jump, this match would have went a lot differently, but obviously that doesn't matter. Novak knew it was never going to be a cakewalk (despite Nadal's best efforts to convince him so), but he also didn't expect a war, and he had to go to war if he was going to win this match.. So ultimately, Nadal's mind games in the lead-up did work to some extent.

He has been playing since the beginning of the season and if he does t have foot pain, he can play his regular way. He was able to numb the pain in his foot. There are two hard court grand slam competitions and one on grass and one on clay. Novak specializes in hard court and grass ahead of Nadal. Where Nadal specializes in clay ahead of Novak. Considering there is only one clay grand slam and two hard court grand slams alone Novak is the one at an overal advantage and Nadal is at a disadvantage. Yet Nadal is still ahead in total grand slams wins. Imaging they even out the playing field and added another clay court to a grand slam. Nadal would be by far and away ahead of these guys.
