I’m 14 and I can’t believe how far along I’ve gotten in the farrier industry. I already have 4 clients. 3 in my town and 1 in another city.
I when I was 12 I took great interest into farrier work. I bought numerous books on hoof health and how to keep them healthy. Also how to diagnose hoof diseases.
In total I’ve spent about two years shadowing my farrier, and going to other barns so she could teach me the basics.
I saved every penny I owed and worked for to buy my own horse. And I’ve been kindly gifted a top quality rasp, a pair of GE nippers, and a green Hoofjack hoof stand.
The other tools I’ve already bought.
I’m so grateful to have this opportunity and experience the sense of accomplishment every time I finish a horse’s hooves. In 4 years I’ll be certified through PHCP. And the last two years in my high school I’m allowed to apprentice my farrier. So it’s going to go towards my credits.

My step-dad owned horses and did not take as good care of them as he should have. I finally talked him into selling the last 2 to one of his nurses (he was 85 yo). The horses went fromvliving ghetto to a Beverley Hills stable. The horses repaired the nurse's marriage. She and her husband sold both their houses to buy property with a pasture and stall. Animals are amazing. ❤

I love the work you and farriers do. What irritates more than anything is when owners do not take responsibility for the ongoing care of their animals. And yes, I've owned horses, daily care, grooming, scheduled vet clinics for vaccinations and every 6 weeks, had a farrier come and shoe my horses. I cannot imagine having an animal without proper care.

My husband was a blacksmith for over 60 years. This hentleman did everything just like my husband did. Except the heated shoe part. My husband had a shop and he had horses he did special shoeing on. But hed set the particular horses shoes up at the blacksmith shop with welded aids . Then would drive out to where horse was kept and nail special shoe on horse's clean trimmed hoof. He never had to do any correction on the welded shoe but an occasional narrowing or widening the heel or toe. He had an eye for remembering that horse's hooves.
During rodeo time every year, hed often be so busy shoeing mostly the special performance horses. To save time, hed set those shoes up in the wintertime and we kept them in alphabetical order accordering to owner's last name. If owner had more than 1 horse, wed write a horse's name on each shoe to designate which horse for a multiple horse owner. He worked with local vetinarians in shoeing crippled or injured horses. Also did a lot of corrective shoeing on horses. Like for a horse who would overreach with back hoof and clip front leg or even snag front shoe off. I had a American Saddlebred mare that traveled witj her back feet too close together she kept her back ankles raw by corking herself at her faster gaits. Hed weld pieces of horse shoe to outside of her back horseshoes to cause her to travel with her feet farther apart. It worked.

A great farrier like this man, IS an artist. He also likely ends up with backaches a lot. Or injuries caused by a fractious horse. When he gets older, he'll know how he earned such a bad back. And crushed toenails. Of course, steel toed boots help prevent a lot of broken toes and ruined toenails. There's nothing so rough on a farrier than a horse jetting his foot out of his hands and stomping it down on his foot. 😮
