Falconry: Coping a Peregrine falcon

  • In this falconry video I explain and demonstrate coping the beak of a Peregrine Falcon. IF you advance to the 3:10 minute make you can skip the explanation and watch how it is done. Birds beaks and talons constantly grow. In captivity with a richer diet, often natural processes are not enough to keep them sharp and the proper length. So in falconry, zoos, rehab centers and breeding programs, trimming and shaping of the beak and talons must often be done once or twice a year. This skill is called Coping. THIS PROCESS DOES NOT HURT THE BIRD IN ANY WAY AND CAN NOT BE FELT and is akin to filing your nails. The part of the beak being trimmed or coped is nothing but keratin (the same as your fingernails) and has no feeling.
Originally this process used to be done with files. Most veterinarians and wildlife workers now prefer a dremel. Because this makes the entire process infinitely faster and thus causes less stress for the bird.
I recently started a new facebook group to teach and promote falconry and connect falconers around the world. Please support this effort on this facebook page:

Fantastic! I’d love to see clear close ups of before and especially after to get a better idea of how you shape that beak.

Great video, and something you don't see done often. Hopefully you're all better by now.

Thank you Ben for everything you do... I am a new subscriber. I've been planning to become a falconer since I was 12 years old. I have recently started my journey. I am an avian specialist and have offered a mobile bird care /grooming service since 1995. I recently fixed a crack in the beak of an American Kestrel. I was very excited to find out that you also own a macaw. Just wanted to reach out to you and thank you for all of the great information. I have learned so much.

Thank you Ben. Have learned so much from your videos and podcasts. Hope you're feeling better and appreciate that you're still uploading even though you probably don't feel like it!
I would appreciate your opinion on getting an eyas as an imprint, if you live in a country that doesn't allow trapping, and has few falconers, so unable to obtain an older bird.

    You are awesome!!
Take good care my friend! 🌟🌸🙂

I'm kind of interested in how sponsors work out these days in relation to the small population of falconers. Are most master falconers also sponsors these days? Or do only a very few masters do sponsoring? How many apprentice falconers may be getting mentored by one sponsor at the same time? I have seen you talk about these subjects in bits and pieces in other videos, but it would be cool for those who are just fans of the sport or interested in getting into the sport and have not obviously had to go through all of these things and find them out yet, to do a video on how the community of falconers operates these days. Does the internet come into play at all? Are some sponsors long distance or even out of state?

Depends on the area. In my state we always have a few people getting into the sport and a few people getting out. So at any time we have around 250 falconers in Utah. It used to be closer to 300. It goes back and forth. With sponsors in the USA it has to be in your state. And the closer to you the better so they can help directly with your bird and with training. That being said, a lot of people have others who aren’t their sponsor who help give advice and mentor them. In Utah these days I don’t think I have seen anyone lately sponsoring more that two people at a time. I don’t think Utah currently has a limit, but it used to be you could only sponsor 3 people at a time

@@benwoodrufffalconry do you have a general idea in Utah how many falconers are apprentices, general falconers, and master falconers? Are there a lot more of one than the other two?

You can fix the lack of exercise by letting the bird free
