Red Box is H&K's speaker emulation circuit. You can buy it as a seperate device. I believe it's designed to sound like a 4x12 (or possibly a 1x12). Also the "Effects" socket is to switch the FX loop in and out of circuit
Going Direct in can sound a tad sterile but here the amp tone plus the speaker emulation gives a characterful amp and cab sound straight into the studio recording or venues pa system. H&K really know what they are doing. Brilliant but unfortunately it's over-engineered for live gigging and speedy, affordable repairs. Strange how Leo Fender got the design of guitars and amps so right from the start. It was his penny pinching minimalist approach that kept everything focussed and appropriately functional. Great engineer.
It appears that H&K's protection circuitry saved the owner cost in parts but added cost in labor and accessibility for repair. At some point they gotta step back and think about what they're doing here - wouldn't a couple fuses and fusible resistors do the same job? I think a good tech could probably bias this amp more quickly the old fashioned way before they could figure out how the fancy bias system works. But this was likely needed for the multiple power settings. I guess there are no solutions - only compromises. This is probably why H&K isn't more popular - only people like Alex Lifeson can afford to use these amps by having a bunch of backups handy and being able to afford to send the thing back to Deutschland when it breaks. It's too bad, it's a very sexy amp that sounds really good.
hello. It's good to hear from you again. You make some very good points there. The amp looks cool and sounds good. But so much not needed junk in it. Take care.
As far as I know Brad did not even have a part two when he looked at one of these amps. I will just assume that he also said hell no to trying to work on one.
Hello Shane. I don't blame him. Definitely a can worms. I hadn't had time to check if he had done a part two. He did say in the video that he had repaired one or two of them. The one he was repairing in the video was blowing fuses. Maybe the power transformer was toast and who knows what else would be blown in it. Thanks for watching and take care Shane.
G'day legends, just stumbled across this comment as I have want to do. The customer expressed urgent desire for the amp to be returned, so it was serviced and returned without time to do any follow up videos. This is the folly of poking the YT game with a stick. From memory this amp had a shorted EL84 which DID NOT take out the cathode MOSFETS, luckily. So it was essentially a replacement of a set of EL84's, a test of the architecture, a burn-in period, then a general service and out she went. Last correspondence with the customer after 1.5+Y, it's still doing well.
Brad‘s guitar garage got a schematic for that amp from somewhere. He has a video doing a repair on the same kind of amp. Message that guy and I’m sure he would give you a copy.
Hello John. Yes I watched the part one and was sat wondering where he had got it from. If I ever get another one in for repair I certainly will message him. Thanks for watching and take care John.
DI or Direct Insert means you can plug in an XLR lead (a balanced lead like a microphone lead), the other end plugs in the Microphone input XLR socket of a mixer desk to the house or studio PA system. Red Box or whatever? Must be a well known manufacturer of expensive DI boxes for the musical gentry and that is built-into this amp. The DI box matches the impedance and signal voltage to use the high quality mic preamps in pro mixer desks. 👍 A more knowledgeable commenter reckons RedBox is H&K's speaker cabinet emulation which would also feature a direct Insert function as described above. :)
While this is an ingenious system, they have not taken into account the average user. In my experience when you present most musicians with this amount of options, nothing follows but pain!
Hello Brad. As I said in the video I have seen less knobs on a space ship. I take my hat off to you for fixing these types of amps. I watched your video going through the schematic. I was getting that sinking feeling. Not the sort of amp that this old Pommy wants to fix. Take care Brad.
I got two decca deccalians 10 watt p/p Tried for loads on ebay but people have got faster connections online and i get beat by £2 Got a tidy mullard style 3/3 for £50 with diodes for rectification..so a 2/3! Transformers are so expensi 0:04 ve
Expensive ..a bloke called Ed Dining repairs and builds them ive heard he might have retired Missed a tvm 30 pa amp was ultra linear..70s Manchester amp Oh well fixing a novosonic 5/10 phillips ..output tranny is lots out.. uneven ohms from ct. To anodes..shot maybe Good luck Paul
Hello mate. Yes, I think you are right on that one. The guy got a refund from the ebay seller he bought it from. It was up for sale again within a few days. Sold for 99 quid!!. Talk soon mate. Take care,.
@@robnic52 Nor here, it's a good amp let down by the complexity of its construction. Incidentally, that's MY amp in the video........when it's waiting for it's turn as an 18 watt standby amp it will make a very trendy table lamp
@@robnic52 You're quite right. The one I tried sounded fine clean but was fizzy on the overdrive, but the one in this video didn't sound like that to be fair.
@@steverawlinson8029 It is a good amp until something goes wrong with it and not one tech that I know of will touch H&K due to the unnecessary complexity. You could ship it back to H&K OR one of its authorized service centers (If you even have one in your area) and have it fixed but the shipping cost and out of warranty repair probably would not be worth it depending on where you live. Wish you all the best!

Hello Chris, thank you. That's cleared that one up. Some of you guys on here have great knowledge. Thanks for watching and take care Chris.

Hello Rob. I can't get on with direct inject. It has to be a mic for me. You are right about Leo Fender. It's been all down hill ever since.

Hello Rob That's why I haven't heard of RedBox. I am not really musical gentry. More your torn Tolex type of Musician lol. Take care Rob.
From now on I shall be cleaning all lenses with a guitar pick, as per your example.
Hello Mark Ha Ha. Use a .88mm for best results. Take care.

I just passed up on o e of those for 250 bucks. I wanted it for the transformers, but I had to fight the temptation..
Hello. Is that a good price for in the States?
Bring back the hagstrom bass amp. This sux!
Hello Jack. Yes, it sounds okay but way over engineered for a guitar amp. Take care.

Note to self after seeing the guts of it: do NOT buy a H&K Tubemeister.
Hello. Yes definitely the right decision there. take care.
It's a speaker emulator
Hello, thank you. Take care.
Yuck! I tried one of these in a guitar shop years back and it was a vile fizz box.
Might have been faulty, doesn't sound fizzy here.
