Years and Years is a British television drama series which began broadcasting on BBC One in the United Kingdom on 14 May 2019. The series was created and written by Russell T Davies, and stars Emma Thompson as Vivienne Rook, an outspoken celebrity turned political figure whose controversial opinions divide the nation.

A dude that cheated on his husband without no reason but some minor issues, just because the other dude was pretty and young...yeah, such a great character...And it was Daniel who proposed to Ralph in the first place.

it's one of the best scenes i've seen in recent years. the use of the soundtrack and 'happy birthday' simultaneously over all future news makes everything more scary. brilliant.

The way the soundtrack over happy birthday turns it into minor key is really really clever.
The best thing about this speech is that Daniel repeats the line "we used to think the news was boring" in Episode 4

funny thing - when i first watched the tv series the timing of the queen's death seemed plausible (like, sure it was bound to happen sooner, rather than later), but still the event itself seemed so abstract. now we're here and it's such a strange feeling to finally experience the moment we've all seen fictionalised on tv, not only in this series. i'm not a royalist by the way, i don't think there is a place for monarchy in today's world, but it is a huge cultural shift regardless.
I am really impressed that Russell T Davies got this almost spot on (in the series it happens circa 2022 - ie just before Lincoln's 3rd birthday). In real life, the coronation will likely happen in the (northern) summer of 2023.

This show was so underrated.
What this captures most perfectly is how time passes. How many people are thinking right now that it seems like a second ago that Christmas was almost round the corner, or it was my birthday, or since we were doing this a year ago? This shows it in a nutshell. We don’t notice time speeding us to the future.
I'd hate for this show's incredible score to become associated with the pandemic and economic implosion we will go thorough. The world will never be the same.

This show honestly unnerved me when I watched it. It makes you realise a lot of the stuff shown such as a threat of nuclear war, market crashes, corrupt politicians, etc; it isn’t just happening in this show; it’s happening in real life right now.

@@armandelmarie519, how was he supposed to predict Coronavirus? If COVID didn't happen, Trump would have still been in power.
Even still, RTD still predicted an influenza type virus in the future, within the show, a Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, and the death of the Queen in 2022. That is pretty crazy.
Vivian is also very similar to that of Nigel Farage, someone who kinda failed in the past two elections he took part in, but still quite prominent on TV for some reason. Who knows if he'll show up within the political space again.

Visiting this montage on 24 February 2022 - the day Russian armed forces first crossed into Ukraine. Terrified for the coming years and years. Let's hope Russel T Davies was more wrong than right...
Well at this rate it looks more likely the Russian army will stage a coup than the Ukrainian one will, although both possibilities remain very remote.

despite any inaccuracies, the show was brilliant as some kind of an essay about people relationship with politics. though not sure I'll stand to re-watch it full now; today it hurts even more to be reminded how little the world knew about my country

Finished watching Years & Years last night. Wow. OMG, JUST WOW. The soundtrack had me in tears every time.
I have just begun watching Years on Years on HBO and was hooked after minutes. HBO will not allow streaming the series and I believe it is wise. I will be watching Episode 3 on Friday when it is first previewed and cannot wait for the next phase of the Lyon family in the future. This is a brilliant show and the actors have brought their A-Game.

In 2019, just 2 years and 10 months ago - 1,034 days - I watched this thinking 2022 was too close for the Queens death.
Just 3 years ago - We had never heard of "covid" and thought the idea of a face mask was either hysterical or potentially criminal.

Back then in 2019 hardly anyone would have believed you when you suggested two old people past the age of 90 might die.

Scary how bang on this is, even pretty much predicting the Queen's death and/or King's Coronation in 2022/3 (it's not entirely clear which Muriel is watching)
Honestly, things seem a lot calmer in our timeline. The show seems like an extrapolation of late 2010s trends, but we've already diverged massively (primarily due to the pandemic). Now it seems like a cool what if scenario.
Throughout episode 1 you could tell that Ralph and Daniel were heading for splitsville. Ralph became a complete and utter pillock who was only interested in himself and started believing in all that conspiracy theory rubbish. If he'd have been in that dinner scene where Muriel gave her infamous speech I'd have to have seen her challenge him to it.
Ralph is symbolic to the people in real life who believe all the conspiracy theories about things and won’t listen to the true facts.
Ralph was all so willing to be open mind about "conspiracy" while Dan just shut it out as his little mind could not compute............ Very well Dan found Vitor and passion/lust then all led to Dan's own death. It tells us Dan's blind faith blind lust very little thinking just not wise!!!!
🔛 the other hand Ralph was sincerely happy for Dan and Vitor, which shown he truly love Dan without blindly held onto their sudden ended marriage, which takes guts and intelligence on Ralph part.
Conspiracy always exists big or small, only if you really pay attention. When people say "corruption is real, but conspiracy is silly. It's like saying houses are real but blueprints are silly"!!!

I was waiting & waiting for Daniel to find out it was his ex that reported Viktor. I wanted him to get revenge on him for that. Or at the ashes scattering, I thought perhaps Ralph would breakdown & reveal he'd set in motion the chain of events that led to the drowning. Wanted Stephen to redirect his anger to Ralph. Alas, I didn't get my wish.
@@ste9281 own thoughts now but I think that RTD possibly missed an opportunity with the dinner scene in the last episode. In the scene where Muriel gives that infamous "It's all your fault" speech she could've challenged Ralph and said to him that people like him subconsciously look for people to tell them what to think and believe as they're unable to comprehend the facts when presented with them

Everyone is happy and smiling for the two getting married except Bethany who is looking quite sad and lost in her own world. I never would have noticed except happened to pause on this moment, thats a neat foreshadow of things to come for her.
Also, great show! And great first scene.
One of the most brilliant and thought-provoking series, compelling us to look inward and reflect. It accurately predicted Queen Elizabeth's death-let's hope nothing else comes true. We've already got more than enough tragedy, hate, and lack of empathy in the world. We could all be so happy, yet we idolize billionaires who, if they wanted to, could solve every problem on this planet.

They said Soviet. It's hinted in the series that after Putin's Russia annexed more territories, it started referring to itself as a Soviet Union again. It's not totally unreasonable concept since many people in Russia feel very nostalgic for the greatness of their country during the Soviet era and Putin often plays into the nostalgia.

Damn, I got chills hearing "God save the King" in 2022. Weird how they got the year right. They also predicted the Russian invasion of Ukraine and I wouldn't be surprised if the China vs US conflict in the Pacific is mirrored in real life too (hopefully not involving nukes). This show is wild and yet captures our ever-changing world so well.

Obviously the point of the show wasn't to exactly predict the future, but it's funny in retrospect how the real world turned out bang on to this in some ways, better in others, worse in others, and in some ways much, much stupider
Just imagine a world where:
Brexit never happened.
The refugee crisis never happened.
COVID-19 never happened.
Russia never invaded Ukraine.
The British armed forces remained an, "elite fighting force"
The cost of living crisis never happened.
Now think about how all of this has been snatched away from us, and we're now veering down a dark path of pain and misery.
