  • Honda CBR1000RR R Fireblade SP Review | What's the bike like to live with as road rider?? Back in the early Spring this year Honda kindly loaned me the awesome CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP for a couple of weeks so I could get to know the bike - here's the conclusion of my time with the machine and whether, as a run of the mill road rider, I could live with such a thoroughbred bike....

    Thanks for this. While at my advanced age, a sport bike has gone from my everyday/only bike to my choice for a 1-2 hour blast on a sunny day, I love the idea that we can just go down to the shop and buy a bike with better performance than a $200k sports car.

      Im a car geek and trust me, a Honda cbr1000rr r sp is faster than any stock $800K car. It’s literally only heavily tuned super cars or some stock hypercars than can match the speed of these bikes. It blows my mind what you get for the money if you compare that to road performance cars.

    I don't do track days and I'm probably too old for that riding position, so I'm never going to buy a bike like this... But that doesn't stop me admiring Honda for building it. I notice you didn't get Mrs Flyer to try out that comfy pillion seat!

    I use my CBR1000rr strictly for touring. I gave up my FJR to go for something lighter. I did a 13,000 Km ride in June this year and the bike was flawless. I raised my bars 3" and dropped the pegs 0.50" and mounted a pair of Yamaha FJR hard bags on it. The perfect lightweight tourer for me. You don't need a paddock stand to oil the chain. Apply oil, roll bike forward, rinse, repeat. When you're away from home, there's no other way and it only takes 1-2 minutes. Reset your trip odometer each time you fuel up. I refuel before I hit 150 miles.

    Great review. Of all the reviews I have seen you are the only one who talks about what it is like on a normal day to day use. Thank you. Most others act like you need to ride it to the track and don't touch it again until you go back to the track.

    Towards the end of the video, I still wanted to hear about the power band, the exhaust sound, and the fun factor. You discussed all three. Thanks MF for a very detailed review! This bike is not for me, but I’m glad bikes like this exist.

    Last Blade I rode was an 09 model. I have to confess to having a soft spot for the Honda. I have yet to ride a sportsbike with all the latest rider aids. I'm used to analogue bikes, but not the latest versions.
    From what I can glean Honda have nailed this one.
    Like you said unless you're prepared to risk proper fines or jail its a no for the road unfortunately. Otherwise its just an expensive trinket!
    I think it looks superb. Thanks for your input Andy.
    I enjoyed it as ever.
    Ride safe sir.

    I’m a similar rider like you, sticking more with the plush and the feel of premium liter bikes rather than taking them on the track. I test rode triple R SP couple of weeks ago. Amazing machine. But being a sucker for comfort and touring on sport bikes, my double RR SP and gixxer are way better. This triple R is like a supermodel , a complete joy to the eyes, great for an intense short term ride, but not meant for me to wife it up. Great review.

    Beautiful bike. Envy you riding it. At 72 years young (and two heart surgeries) I no longer ride sport bikes but enjoy watching high quality videos about them. My first motorcycle was a 1988 Kawasaki Ninja 600 (after completing a German riding course) and I rode that bike all over Europe. Had to sell it before I returned to the states (I worked for the US Government) due to the specs on the bike. Still remember it with fondness. Great high quality videos.

As an American I've always appreciated the more practical character of British motorcycle press that seems a bit less like breathless regurgiation of PR materials than ours. Perhaps is the poor weather or that MCs are seen as a more legitimate means of transport that over here.

    Lovely machine but definitely a 2nd or 3rd bike, that said a very expensive 2nd or 3rd bike. My big issue is it only could only be really enjoyed on track then again it is so expensive to risk on the track there in lies the conflict.

    It’s really good to see someone knowledgable review a bike you are unlikely to own as I’m more of a Classic rather Sports person. It doesn’t make this bike any less great, just different. So again, another great review with subtle humour. Thank you. Now here is a little question: Not that you would overtake at the speed limit of 70 mph (ahem..) but if you did, would you change down a few cogs or just open the tap in sixth and get blasted forwards?

    • @TheMissendenFlyer

    You can pick up a 10 year old Blade for 5 grand and scare the beejeesus out of yourself. Awesome bikes. I can't see any justification for spending 24K on a bike for road use in the UK. Can't knock Honda though. A 10 year old Blade for a 1/4 of the price of a new one is the rational way to go if you want to experience race bike performance on our crappy roads. There are plenty of very pampered low mileage Blades that have never seen a drop of rain for a fraction of the price. 175BHP compared with 214BHP for the latest SP model isn't gonna mean jack to most of us mortals who want to stay alive.....unless of course you're just minted and can afford the ego trip

    This is the best answer to the fuel gauge I've found online! It seems all the Fireblades CBRs don't have a gauge!
    "It's quite simple really.
    The number tells you how much fuel in gallons you have used since hitting reserve.
    When the light comes on you have 0.77 gallons of reserve fuel left.
    if the number gets up to 0.7 you are pretty much running on fumes.
    How many miles obviously depends on how you ride and how accurate it is I don't know." People are chancing it and running dry at 0.7 n pushing to the pump! So at 0.4 find fuel A.S.A.P lol

    Interesting I owned a 2011 blade for over 8 years and even toured France on it. It was an amazing road bike for a sports bike which I'm sure anyone else who owned that generation of blade will agree with . That bike was only £11,000 new too. How things change in 10 years. This new one seems a far worse road bike I wouldn't want to tour my local town on it now and its over twice the price. I'm 50 next year and full on sports bikes are a thing of the past to me. Now ride a Z1000SX which is a perfect do it all bike. Btw what about Nick Sanders for someone who's toured the world on sports bikes. He's done it several times on R1's Amazing man.

    Not really made for normal roads but of course you can use it every day. The question is: should you. The are much better bikes for normal use on normal roads or worse. In most cases cheaper, much more comfortable, much better weather protection, luggage capacity etc. And if your age comes near or over fifty, you want a bit more comfort etc.; your body asks for that.

    Change the sprocket to 15/44. It’s fast enough for the german autobahn (315 km/h in the 6. gear) and for country roads. My bike is very fast between 2000 and 6000 rpm, much faster as with the stock sprocket. It’s also perfect for touring with 15/44. Over 8000 rpm it is like riding a rocket.
    I’am 62 years old but i will never change to another bike.

    Honda's expensive halo race bikes have been good investments in the past but they've also got a heritage through race success. RC30, SP1&2 all command good prices these days. I'm not sure the Fireblade SP will fair as well. Maybe out of rarity. Damn fine machine but maybe missing the engineering design flair European manufacturers are putting out. I'm actually a bit sad Honda seem to be playing catchup these days instead of being a front runner even with their halo machine. The Goldwing is a bit of an exception as it's pretty unique in its segment.

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  2 года назад

      I thought the Fireblade felt very special whilst I had it - I have ridden the other European sportbikes which are also brilliant, but the Honda is no lesser of a bike in my opinion....that said I'm only riding these as a back lane sunday rider not squeezing every last 1/10th of a second on track.....

    • @stevecade857
      @stevecade857 2 года назад

      @@TheMissendenFlyer I have no doubt the Fireblade SP is a special bike but it's following the pack and not leading which is where Honda should be. A RCV inspired halo bike would have followed on the heels of Honda's previous greats more closely imho.
