advice: Just slow down! You don't have to graduate in 4 years. Concentrate on ABSORBING the material, not completing the course work.

Suggestion: substitute cycling or swimming for martial arts? Something where you can get INTENSE exercise, but in a solo manner, and on your own schedule.

I don't have any advice, I just want to say, you are amazing! Working, supporting a family, studying, doing exercise... You truly are incredible. I'm also working and studying for a master's degree, doing 2-3 subjects a semester and I honestly study all day when I'm not at work... I don't live a balanced life at all. So kudos to you

I can say this for sure...
My life has been full of failure!
    Failure in every way possible
    So, in order:
    1. NEVER GIVE UP!
    2. If you believe in something, you must at very 1st believe in your self.
    3. Physical fitness is the number one thing. In fact, look at the drop down that occurs whenever you are in the airplane. Make sure that oxygen mask is applied to yourself before you help others.
    4. Set priorities for yourself. Priorities you set ALWAYS trump everything else.
    5. When you find yourself in an impossible situation, believe that time is on your side. It always is.
    6. Always keep moving. Movement is how one gets past ALL adversities.
    7. NEVER GIVE UP!
OK .. pretty banal stuff, but this is how I have managed to keep up with this thing we all call life, and living

This was such an encouraging video to me, especially when you said that it's never too late for finishing a degree since I've been feeling really insecure lately because of my age... I'm studying electrical engineering, currently 3rd year but I'm 24 years old. My delay was due to the fact that I got into med school after high school but decided that career path wasn't for me and dropped out. I feel so much more enthusiastic and happy in this field and I haven't regretted it so far but as I said I do sometimes get insecure about my age. Thanks a lot for this video it means a lot

I'm literally in the same boat! Except I'm 23 in my 2nd year of electrical engineering :') I graduated with my Biomedical Science degree with the intent on med school but after doing a math & physics elective in my final year, I knew I was in the wrong "problem solving" degree. It's hard making friends too with everyone straight out of high school 😅

@@DaniRoxMahSox Making new friends in this situation was tough for me too in the first two years but this year I suddenly made a bunch of new friends in a month... I think that's when you start feeling you're on pretty much the same mental level, it doesn't seem like you're talking to high schoolers. Good luck to you!!

I think there's some interesting points for thought there: 1. she said specifically that she'd doing everything she needs to do: thats because she did it and came with that evaluation, so it may be the case that the problem its in the evaluation - maybe she's overstating the actual work done. For example, i perceived that i almost always exaggerate the amount of study hours i actually do: if you ask me, i could say "6 to 8 hours a day", but then i came with an actual cronometer and calculate my study time, and it got, like, 2-3 hours. We tipically fool ourselves. 2. it may also be the case, that her goals are actually achievable doing exactly what she's doing but across 8-10 months instead of 4-5 months, f.e.

  • @tinyleopard6741
    @tinyleopard6741 9 месяцев назад +9

First, I agree with the advice given. While a Masters degree can have lots of utility, she also has other important priorities like already has kids, has a good job, and important hobbies, so she might be overloading herself with full-load studying. In my university, many grad students are working or have families, taking 2 or 3 courses per sem. (Granted, I live in a developing country so we need more time to work than developed countries.)
Second, if she has the time and effort, she can try optimizing. Justin Sung and iCanStudy have lots of content for optimizing studying. I also remember a studying mom in a third-world country (relevant, they need lots of time for family) asking Justin Sung once when live given sound advice, like figuring out the flow of her day, the tendencies and uncertainties, energy/focus levels, duties, so she can have more quality time for family, time for chores, time to rest, all the while studying more effectively.

I was in the same position as you were. Here's what happened: the computer science course lasts 5 years in my university. That's too many years and I didn't want to delay it any further. I also had a full time job, just like you do martial arts, I swim. Usually the expected is to take 5 disciplines per semester here in my university.
Result? Failed a lot of classes, just finished my undergrad in 6 years because I had to retake those classes. I got to study and pass all of them in the end, but I have the feeling that I didn't get to study all of them the way I wished. I ended up studying for passing the exams but not the knowledge, because I just couldn't fail anymore.
What's my feeling right now? I'm thinking about studying some of those disciplines again, but properly study them. It may take some time to study calculus again (but properly) and some statistics . I'd also like to get a profound knowledge of linear algebra. It may take a year or more to do so with a full time job and other things to do... But that's my option right now
What I think I could've done better was exactly what math sorcerer said: take as few disciplines as you can take per semester. I ended up delaying 1 year because I didn't want to delay it and failed lots of classes plus I didn't get to study them properly.
So what if I had took 2 or 3 classes and really studied them?
I would also have delayed the course (same result), but would've got the feel that I really did study for those classes and knowing as much as I could about them, not just passing this exams and I wouldn't have this need to study them again.
So that's what I think at least

To the person sending the question, a different approach to learning may be helpful. The mindset of "Practice, Practice, Practice" is encouraged, and often how people are trained. This is actually inefficient and often ineffective. They make the student believe that each problem is a distinct situation.
In general, each unit in a math class introduces a couple of new ideas, and then there is a consistent problem solving method applied throughout the unit. The most important aspect of the method is deconstructing the problem into sub-components. To make this more effective, set aside the numerical values and use identifiers throughout the problem. Then the sub-components will start to look very similar, with perhaps algebraic manipulation taking the sub-component of one problem into that of another.
Start by studying the text of the chapter rather than the examples or problems. Take two passes through, taking notes in the second pass. The do some of the examples, setting aside the numbers. With a solution, still without the numbers, analyze both what you did and how the result connects with the question. Doing this for one or two examples in a section which has a half-dozen or more will be extremely efficient. Then look at the other examples and see how repetitious they are.
Doing this, the consistent problem solving methods will become more familiar and comfortable. In later chapters, it will be easier to concentrate on the new ideas introduced.
Finally, for the algebraic manipulations, consider that this is all "recursive algebra". Adding all the implied parentheses, the arithmetic evaluation occurs inside out, while the algebraic transformations occur outside in.
I know this goes against what students are generally told is the "right way" to approach math. Think about how many people would say, "I'm bad at math!" Perhaps the real issue is that the "right way" was a poor approach. I suggest that this is much better.

Im majoring in CS, before that i was majoring in pure maths. I only worked for a short period during college and also took part in a paid undergrad research project (on quadratizations of submodular pseudo-boolean functions) for 5 months before quitting (it was very demanding, i was struggling with anxiety and i thought that i needed to find a intership instead of using my time in this project). But eventhough i only studied during most of it, i still took only 3 to 4 subjects in each period (instead of 5 which would get u through it all in 4 years). These majors are hard, sometimes you are not at your best mentally and you failed some subjects (last year there was a quarter where i took only 3 subjects, without working and i failed 2 of them LOL). You just need to be patience and streach out the course as much as you need. Obviously this advice works better if your doing college for free like me, because if your paying a fee every period then i dont know if streching it for too long is a good idea.

Then it's become more difficult. I just want to told that you should prioritize your work. I am a math major , I also give up something which is resist against my goal. 1. Have enough sleep
-just having time to relax is so crutial for beeing able to solve problems and just feel good in life in general. From what i heard, it sounds like you dont have much time for that kind of stuff.
-in the same kind of ballpark
Do something mindless, like doodling , like singing

Ill leave it at tha atm.

If you are studying full time, consider part time study--2 classes per semester/trimester, stretching out your college time--table, with maybe one less demanding course outside of your field, but still meeting some requirement. Maybe take (only) one semester off (at a time, more than once here and there if necessary, if your institution allows it), to do self-study to prepare for whatever classes you intend to take next.
Stick with the martial arts for sure, because even after earning a degree, you'll likely still be very interested in that, and it's always good for you.

"I think it is too much" this sentence have been said from me every semester and I don't have full time job, only part time job with flexible time and school. But in my country, there is trash school system, some schools trying to teaching better but 90% of schools are totally "worthless" for time you'd like to give to the school and spend in it because quantity > quality. No matter what, students doesn't keep up with time table and exams (bcs often it is unrealistic to do so) and when they are graduated (because of switch the school and listen f. e. math classes again for third time, that's often the reason, why they are better than E mark), some of them are still not competent to do the job in their filed which they studied.

My question for this person is are doing so much because you need to or are you doing so much because you feel pressured to do so? Is she truly being fulfilled? Martial Arts are a great thing to do but if she's burning out then maybe Martial Arts classes aren't actually helpful in her specific case. She might be better doing a less time consuming form of exercise to stay fit for now. She can always pickup martial arts again later on in life when there's more time.

You might also look into whether you can find ways to study more effectively. I think there are books available on this subject. There are people who are not particularly gifted in any way but one and they do well in school because the one gift they have is for time organization....they are efficiency freaks.(later) But too much efficiency and it turns into a mania and....so maybe the best bet is to mix reasonable efficiency with cutting back and see what happens then.

Listen to this video...not everything in life is success: failed marriages, friendships, relationships, courses, jobs, promotions, etc. We tend to focus on the positive coming when it's just a tiny bit of life, but we don't acknowledge the negatives, as they were not part of life. We all have different roads and/or paths, just find the one that is easier for you (that doesn't involve harming yourself or anybody else). One step at a time is fine, in this race called life there are no winners or losers, 'casue we'll all end up in the same place. Enjoy your journey with responsibility! Peace out and happy 2024!

you addressed the issue at a microlevel, suggesting some things she could do as an individual. beyond the micro, i would suggest that universities need to change how they function especially in the sciences where they act as sorting and filtering mechanism, often agains non-traditional students. the essential ways that students are educated in mathematics and many science disciplines have not changed in decades, if not centuries. i am a mathematics faculty member at a large R1 institution and i find that the existing structures often work best for a select few students, especially in mathematics. as a result, there is a lot of social reproduction and it is not based solely on talent and ability. in many departments issues of 'equity' are only given lip service. yes, i see the student invoking an equity issue.

Hello dear professor! I am a computer science student. I just want to talk about intelligence. Well intelligence is a very chaotic concept. However we do know some thing and we don't know many things about intelligence. In my opinioun intelligence is ofcourse important but it is not everything.Because ı don't want to make intelligence as a fate. Human is a strong kind which can struggle against difficult situations. I think there is no a certain way to know that you are a genius or smart or normal. But ı know something no matter what you are you need to make a plan because every different levels need a different plan. Don't trust only your intelligence. Because you can be intelliegence some days you can be stupid some days it can be change because there are a lot of factors that can affect your intelligence positive or negative. But you can work everyday so intelligence is not sustainable there is no guarentee for intelligence. Although there is a guarentee for working so with this opinion ı do believe that working is more important . Remember Feynman's quote : ı was an ordinary person who studied hard there is no miracle people !

In my case I study at a very demanding computer science establishment, you basically need to sacrifice everything to be a great student there but guess what , you don't have any responsability , the government pays for everything , our only duty is to study , it's still not heaven because for example I got out of shape when I went to college ( I was extremely sporty before ) just because of how much I was putting into studying , I'm really sorry for American students .

When you have a family, you really need to get your priorities straight.
Martial arts? That better be of life and death importance to you. If martial arts isn't critical to defining your life, then get rid of it.
People assume that having a family forces us to give up our lives, but this is dead wrong. The actual reality is that family gives us the wake up call that we desperately need to strip us of the nonsense that invaded our (very limited) time on earth - nonsense that we wrongfully assume define our lives. The truth is that we can only dedicate a small part of our lives to, so we should maximize in identifying what those things are and put all our efforts into that. Anything else is a distraction.

Consider those who messed up so badly that it’s very hard to even get back in school; who have zero career prospects; and who have very little time during the day for any kind of study. Trust you got it very good compared to someone else. You have no reason to complain & good reason to celebrate. Maybe the real question is “how can I celebrate life more completely?” “How can I more thoroughly enjoy what I’m doing?”

turn to God, and ask for what you want in your prayers, but acknowledge your will and His may not align. Say the rosary with devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows. Self - reflect. I'll keep you all in my prayers!

Hey fellow math lovers , does anyone know a place like a subreddit or discord where one can share questions and be held accountable for their progress so we can all constructively grow while helping each other and holding each other accountable
    cheers !
