That actually made me curious if we've crossed 0 yet. Things are changing pretty quickly now that my wife and I are in our late 30's, student loans paid off in the next few years and saving a ton more than just a few years ago.
I should really start doing an annual net worth statement...

I'm 19, have over 750 credit score, 3/4 of the way through getting an engineering degree, positive net worth after subtracting student loans. I have an excel sheet where I planned out every month what I need to invest to retire very comfortably, and I plan to stick to it unless the markets start to really shift. I've been watching Graham's videos for a few years now, and taking his advice - so far I can say that he is absolutely correct in what he says and the strategies he talks about work if you're willing to put in the effort. Thank you!

While I agree that most of the technical stuff (like alla finance channels in the US) is purely focused on the American financial system, a lot of the advice given is applicable to other countries.
Take the 3-6 month emergency fund, totally relevant to everyone.
Or paying off debt, also applicable.
Investing as early as possible? You bet!
But I get it that advice around credit scores, Roth IRA, 401k, tax deductions and so on are for American viewers.
Personal finance is all about behavior and common sense, regardless of where you live (unless it's a third world, war-torn country) ;)

@@mizzmolly7649 I'm speaking in general. Ask 90% percent of the people what they know about investing and they will not be able to answer. Ask them if they have a 401k or an IRA, they will say yes. Then ask them what do they know about their 401k or or IRA and again you will get the deer in the headlights look. People need to start explaining this in layman's terms. I know the people doing the videos might think they're already dumming it down, but most still don't understand them.

If you’re feeling discouraged bc you were like me, in your mid 30’s with nothing invested or saved for retirement. Even worse you’re still renting, had cc debt and student loans.
There’s still hope. Invest in amc or GameStop. I made 10k this year, paid off my cc debt, then used 2.5k of that reinvested it into amc and have doubled my money again from one month ago. Amc changed my life and that’s just holding shares, and selling covered calls or cash secured puts. If I can do it you can do it. And that’s not even the short squeeze which is still on the table and hasn’t happened yet.

You're telling a 20-year-old how much they need saved to have a good retirement in today's dollars rather than in estimated future dollars in 40 years. That's going to be a huge difference that you should really account for in these types of videos that would make it a lot more useful.

I can't even find a decent job to get paid $400 while still going to school and even if i did i still have to endure the cluster headaches everday while trying to make money. Doesn't mean i'm mad or jealous cuz i'm not able to, but i'm happy with the little money i have.

I'm so grateful I never took out a student loan. Obtained my bachelors degree by working & paying my way thru community college & then landed a job at a university that then waived all my tuition to finish my bachelors. I think working while going to school is so key to not ending up with a huge mountain of debt, as well as picking the right school. Go in state, start at a community college, & if possible live with your parents while in school so you're not paying for a dorm or rent. The "college experience" is not worth going into major debt for.

Would love to see a part two on this video going in depth on how to set these kinds of things up for everyone who is new, im 21 and am so thrown off by how much there is to offer when it comes down to long term investments. Love the video, would of loved to have seen the average hourly wage and career options when it comes down to younger individuals say with student loan debt. It's so impractical to say roughly $400 a month for the rest of my life into a Roth, when I've got a $600 a month in loan payments, cost of living being well over $1500 a month. Car payments, insurance for all thing especially after you turn 26...... there just isn't many job opportunities even into your 30's that can support the normal cost of living and thats why everyone's in debt statistically until they are well into their 30's to early 40's which just isn't right in a life that's so short.

Yo Graham, for future reference I'd recommend using the median rather than the average for most of the data points (such as income and amount invested).
Based on the reference data in the video, the median numbers on that site are significantly lower, but also a far better indicator of how people are doing.
(the average numbers are heavily skewed by the massive incomes of only a few people in those age brackets, whereas the median is a more true indicator)
Was a great video though, great job on it.

Yes, but also you have to spend some money to stay alive, and if you are poor, that's likely most of your income. And if you have children, it's even harder to cut your expenses, and it's also harder to earn more money.
