Creative Assembly and Total War are in REAL Danger

  • What will happen to CA? Will they survive and thrive once more, or are we seeing the sunset of a company we'd never thought would go under? Given the news of the latest downsizing at CA, which follows the firings from late last year, it's fair to say that it has not been a good 6 months for the company. Despite this latest news however, SEGA assures us that Creative Assembly are still working on Total War projects and unannounced titles, meaning the company seems to be safe for now. Regardless, this type of news is never fun, and despite the Total War games being what might be the closest thing to our minds, we must not forget about how difficult this is for the devs at CA who have or currently experience difficult and uncertain times.
I'd love nothing more than for Total War and Creative Assembly to bounce back better than ever, but it will definitely require quite a lot, again, especially after the horrible showcase that was CA's 2023. But what do you think? Does this spell the long-term doom for CA, or will everything be fine? Let me know in the comments, and make sure to leave a like and subscribe to the channel :)

I'm personally happy that CA's leash is getting shorter. They've been EXTREMELY tone deaf over the past few years greenlighting and developing trash like Hyenas and Sagas titles like Pharaoh (who even asked for this?). I think Sega breathing down their necks could have a positive effect on them. Put some fear of God into them, since they blatantly don't listen to their clientele anymore. They have a few golden eggs they're sitting on like Medieval series, Rome series, Shogun series, the new Three Kingdoms, Game Workshop's Warhammer Fantasy & (very VERY hopefully) Warhammer 40K, but they just refuse to use these golden eggs. They occupy a very pecular niche in the gaming industry that is between 4x strategy games and RTS tactical battlers. Their arrogance has led them down the wrong path and its high time someone reminded them of their position in the grand scheme of things. Maybe they could score some projects with other big IPs like Tolkien's Middle-Earth or WarCraft? Hell, even if the hyped died down, G.R.R. Martin's Westeros?
Focus on what you're good at. That's it.

I can kinda see it being a thing for fantasy stuff like warhammer, with demons and what not. But in a game that is supposed to catch the historical timeline single entity heroes are just bad and seeing them "duel" while a war is going on around them is just cringe.

Not 100% sure, but if I understood the situation correctly, SEGA wants CA to focus almost entirely on Total War going forward, as thats where CA actually makes money. Again. not sure if its correct, but at least from what I've heard and understood, it was mostly the "console team" (what I heard them be called - the team working on titles other than Total War), and not the Total War team that was affected by the layoffs, so it's basicly just Total War Assembly at this point.
Also dont know if CA Sofia was affected by this. From what I've heard they weren't, but I don't know for sure, so I would like to see your sources for that, as I can't find any.

Maybe I'm wrong, but something definatley changed between TWW2 and TWW3.
Sure, the game definately got a boost due to the populaitiy and "brand" of Warhammer, but the current popularity of Warhammer (fantasy) is in large parts due to Total War Warhammer. The thing is, Medieval 2 is nearly 20 years old by now (released 2006). It's getting ridiculous. CA should have already released Remastered versions of Medieval 2 and Empire over the past 10 years. I kind of lost interest in Total War when they axed Total War: Arena. I know it's not for everyone and it didn't make them enough money but man I loved that game. It was such a more casual, fun strategy experience that was low pressure/stress while still letting you be a part of a huge battle and it was actually fun to grind the game.
I love some of the older Total Wars like Medieval 2 and Rome 2 but I mainly just play single battles as a one of and then don't play again for a while. Arena was a game I actually wanted to play each day and put time into and they killed it. I'm aware you can get yourself onto the Chinese servers for the game but that's not what it should be.
The main games they've been releasing seem underwhelming too. They don't seem as gritty or as real feeling, so from my perspective, they killed the most fun game they had under the Total War name and replaced it with subpar ones instead.

I've been patently waiting for a proper Empire sequel for 15 years. Every year my teenage self would patently wait for the devs to release something that would scratch that particular itch, and every year my dreams have been crushed. I have not given up hope, but I have stopped waiting. I will not purchase another game from the series until it's what the community deserves...the Original community at that.

I think it's clear the deeper city and population mechanics could work but they've made the decision to exclude them. Total War is one of, if not the most, popular strategy game series of all time. They're just prioritizing the ease of gameplay and streamlining the campaign map aspects to get players to their battles faster. The battles is the real popular seller that make the series sell to as many people as possible. They're cinematic and hype inducing and the animation work is incredible honestly which makes the big trailers for warhammer awesome for marketing reasons. I don't think city and population mechanics would entice new people into the series but old veterans of the series like us are smaller in number than most people who buy the games now.

Personally, I think the bronze age was a brilliant move but it needed fullsome games as opposed to standalone iterations with limited scope (think earlier TW versions. Perhaps it is due to limitations of the old engine but nevertheless, I am seeing some brilliance in these works and do anticipate future work, though I will always refer to TW as a Creative Assembly beast.

Frankly. They’re gonna be fine, they’ll make 40K Total War. They’ll make millions again, and keep shitting out DLC for it, and suddenly be in Sega’s good graces again.
I hate it. A lot. It will either be derpy or radically change TW’s identity and gameplay it doesn’t resemble total war anymore, but it’s the most logical step in terms of wanting to make money.

With all these devs getting laid off, hopefully they go off to start their own studios, or passion projects of actually good quality like manor lords. With the ample amount of exposure RUclips and social media gives nowadays they stand a fighting chance. These companies greed is only going to give us the next generation of Bethesda, Bliizzard and Valve, and they won't come burdened down by all the corporate baggage.

I gave up already a couple of years ago. We'll have to be contempt with mods, and the the only positive is that this is good for mods, I still remember when Rome II came out, and EBII was under production. I was so disheartened cause I knew I wouldn't come back to the old engine after we had something like DEI. I gave DEI all attention, later 1212, etc, and never went back to EBII, Stainless Steel or Broken Crescent.
Now we can develop a mod and know that people's attention will remain on it lol.

It’s not hard, listen to your fan base. If they are making any historical title that is not medieval 3 or empire 2, they are flat out stupid. When they do make those titles, if ever, it better be in a new engine that is fresh and buildable and capable of much more to come. Those two things, a fan fav sequel on a new engine, could easily save this company in no time. Add in the depth we have been demanding for decades and we will gladly keep playing these games and buying new creative DLC.

Imv (given i didn't play Empire, Atilla or Napoleon) the rot set in with Rome 2 and any new historical total war will suffer the same fundamental problems.
CA became filled with people who wanted to make RPGs not total war. The fisher price settlement building choose 4 options and regions dumbed down campaign map experience presaged everything that followed.
While I love the setting of Warhammer the games were just tedious excuses for the AI to smash big armies into yours on the same ten battle maps and could only be played on higher difficulties through cheese. Bring back the campaign map!

  • @KyleHatesBees

I more or less gave up on Total War already. I really enjoyed Rome 2 and dumped 4,000 some hours into it. I don't really like fantasy or dark grungy aesthetics. So Atilla, Warhammer, Britannia, etc. None of that appealed to me. 3K was actually a lot of fun after I adjusted to it and I similarly dumped almost 2,200 hours into that game.
But Troy and Pharaoh I have a combined total of less than 10 hours between them both. It was like they took the Warhammer formula and tried to apply it to historical games. The fact that in 10 years of Total War I've only had 2 games I really thoroughly enjoyed though meant CA just isn't making games for someone like me. Nothing I can do about it, and I'm not going to sit around and pray and plead for a Rome 3 with 3K's diplomacy and cavalry physics.
I'm just glad I got Troy for free, and Pharaoh technically for free after they gave me a full refund but let me keep it. Both games are wastes of spaces on my storage drives.
